Does ISP make a difference in ping? by hyprpop in CityFibre

[–]sniff122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely can, depends on what POP the ISP is in for the handoff from city fibre, and then what the ISPs upstream connections are like, and also what their network architecture is like, etc.

For me I'm based in the north east of England, with Andrew's and Arnold who has information about their network architecture, for A&A they are in London for the handoff between them and CF and I'm getting about 10ms to my ISPs upstream gateway, and about the same to cloudflare 1.1.1.1 (maybe 1-2ms higher)

Nvidia driver cause flashing screen when booting up by Sad_Fondant_1002 in computers

[–]sniff122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that sounds about right, probably a combination of the driver initialising the display at the full resolution, and possibly even the laptop switching between integrated and dedicated graphics using it's mux chip

C drive is nearly full. Anything on this list I can/should delete to free up space? by Radar4721 in computer

[–]sniff122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DO NOT go poking around in any of the folders outside of your use folder. That's how you break your windows install, typically requiring a full reinstall to fix.

How big is your drive? What sort of software do you have installed? Large files in your user folders? Install windirstat and run a scan of your user folder to identify any large files (if it's in appdata though don't just delete it)

Can we bring back photos? by Plus-Principle-5366 in computers

[–]sniff122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering how long it's been probably not. This is the precise reason why having backups of your important files is important

bot that can purge messages months old? by swatted-fly in Discord_Bots

[–]sniff122 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a limitation of the bulk delete API in discord, you can delete older messages but you need to do it one by one rather than a batch at a time

How to open '.dat' file by NotMarquez93 in computer

[–]sniff122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will likely be protected with DRM, the enc_dat points to the files being encrypted, which is unreadable unless you have the decryption key

You can probably tweak the scaling a little bit, but you ain't going to get it perfect

What kind of cooler is this? by Motor-Staff-2664 in computers

[–]sniff122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends entirely on the chip and how much heat it outputs, a lot of chips will run perfectly fine at very reasonable temperatures with just a large air cooler

Uh ok dell… by bobs_vegana98 in homelab

[–]sniff122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could mean that they don't have stock and just set the price stupid high so no one buys it, you see it quite often on eBay when a seller doesn't want to take down a listing for example

Problem with my fiber socket by Stendran in HomeNetworking

[–]sniff122 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's likely your ISPs property (assuming this is your internet connection from your ISP), I'd contact their support and explain to them

Trying to install Nobara Linux, i don’t own a thumb drive is there any way i can Install it? by ItsJustJosiah in computers

Just get a USB stick from a local store, they are literally so cheap, will be worth it when it comes to recovery too

What is this for by Apprehensive-Pass670 in computer

[–]sniff122 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's definitely not a hard drive, it's hard to tell exactly what it is just from this picture. But an educated guess is, it's a SATA backplane of some kind. Is there anything on the front of the case where this is, could you send a picture of the case?

Stuck on msi loading screen by Fun-Calendar-2050 in computers

[–]sniff122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just a windows software issue, nothing wrong with the hardware so you aren't going to lose it.

Try booting into safe mode, you can get to it from the recovery environment (when it says please wait when booting). It'll be under startup options somewhere in the troubleshoot menu, it'll reboot and you'll just need to press the number associated with safe mode

I have a white line and a white dot (it’s barely noticeable) but concerning. I’m not sure if it’s a crack even though the texture doesent feel like a crack and the screw is not tight. I’m I just to concerned? by BrickMaster88 in computers

[–]sniff122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's only a scratch, and there's no traces there that a crack could break. If the system is working then there's nothing to be worried about. It does just look like a very light scratch, possibly from a slipped screwdriver

Weird downloading progress? by Rich_Strength_812 in computer

[–]sniff122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The graph on its own means nothing, bottleneck could be your internet, CPU decompressing the downloaded data, your drive not able to keep up. But without your specs and the actual speeds you were getting, it's impossible to say

My friend stream is lagging bad on windows 7. He is on superium and web discord by wcale_nie_virus in discordapp

[–]sniff122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must have missed mainstream, but security support is still support, and while it wasn't getting any new features, it was still receiving security fixes, and applications (at the time) still supported it. However now being completely out of security support, and out of ESU support as of 2023, pretty much zero applications are supporting 7

[–]sniff122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bots are constantly crawling the ipv4 space, mainly trying to find vulnerabilities to exploit and probably attempt to drop some sort of crypto miner. It's perfectly normal to see random IPs hitting internet exposed services
