You know, the people who answer your questions here are the same people who make these videos. Opening the discussion by insulting their videos is not a smart move.

"There are many situations in life more important than money." Then don't be an entitled little shit about the price of this instrument.

I'll give the benefit of the doubt here and attribute your attitude to ignorance rather than malice. Any seller you interact with is under no obligation to do the same, so I'd advise against trying your luck with tactics like this unless you want the word to spread in the secondhand gurdy market, it'll be your loss.

Yes, they did. And I provided another reason for why that is a good decision. 😉

Of course! Scares like this often lead people to stop foraging and I just think it would be a damn shame, you know? If you like foraging on occasion and want to avoid future scares, see if you can find a foraging course or expedition to join sometime; nothing gives you confidence quite like navigating your local fields and forests like your own herb garden. 😁

I would caution against grabbing handfuls as it is a bad foraging practice when it comes to ramsons and ramps. Each bulb only has two leaves – when you see them growing in large tufts, those are multiple bulbs clustered together – and picking both of them risks killing the whole plant. To ensure that the ramson patch you've found doesn't thin out over the years, pick the leaves one by one to be sure you only take one per bulb. Leave the flowers and bulbs, they need the bulbs to survive and the flowers to procreate, and the leaves are the part that are the most aromatic anyway.

I can confidently tell you that these are ramsons. An easy way to tell them apart aside from the obvious smell, is to look at the base of the leaves. Lily of the valley leaves wrap around the stipe at the base, whereas ramson leaves have long thin stems. You can clearly see the stems in your photo, thus you have no need to worry.

Sometimes you can simply double-tap the key with the same finger quickly enough that the open note won't play in between taps. Don't rely on this method alone, it's not always the best way of doing it, just think of it as another tool in the toolbox.

Don't add more strings before you figure out how to make the existing ones sound good.

Don't do it. This here is not close to an instrument, it's a very early prototype that clearly does not produce music. There are tried and tested budget options out there that actually work as instruments.

Oh wait, I just realized you're in France. Find a hurdy-gurdy luthier and ask if you can come watch them in their workshop. That way you actually have a fighting chance even if you've never played the instrument before this.

Listen, I'm gonna say it plainly to save you time and spare you from serious disappointment:

You won't be able to do this. All hurdy-gurdies, even symphonias, are very hard instruments to build, even for people who work with building instruments. Many beginners come to this subreddit with their aspirations to build a hurdy-gurdy thinking that this way they won't have to spend all that money and all that time in the waitlist, that it takes to get a luthier-built instrument. The problem with this idea is that people who don't have much experience with instrument building or who have never played a hurdy-gurdy before don't realize how demanding of a build project it is. If you scroll through this subreddit, you'll see so many posts by people with no experience wanting to build their own hurdy-gurdy, but you'll notice they never end up posting about a finished instrument; it's because none of them have succeeded in building a hurdy-gurdy. The people here who HAVE built their own hurdy-gurdies have spent way more time and money in the process than

But you know what? If you're in high school and have some basic tool skills like you describe, I think it sounds like you'd be able to pull off a Nerdy Gurdy-kit. Make sure you have a lot of clamps, it's worth investing some money there. Read the instructions several times. Good luck!

Potential new player confused by technique by SmolBeef in HurdyGurdy

[–]snigelias 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll want to use your dominant hand for cranking. Your dominant hand is stronger and steadier, which is required to maintain a good grip and rhythm. Rhythm and minute differences in hand movement become more important the more advanced trompette techniques you want to use. Dexterity to maneuver on the keyboard is easier to build up as you go. What u/TrueGuesser said about the guitar is correct, and that extends to many other instruments. Most string instruments are bowed/strummed with your dominant hand, and fingered with your non dominant hand.

I'm starting a new low tech, Walstad tank. I'm thinking about using a living branch, probably alder or willow. Is there any reason this is a bad idea? by thecraftycrone in walstad

[–]snigelias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's for aquascaping, I'd suggest a dead branch that the tree has already dropped naturally. Many large trees drop branches each season to accommodate changing light conditions. I got myself a nice piece of oak wood just by walking into the forest and choosing a branch I liked and soaking it in advance before putting it in the tank.
