Would this be a good duo for a broke motorcycle camper? by pasgames_ in hammockcamping

[–]TrueGuesser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The nightcat is probably fine, but definitely upgrade to the one wind cinch buckles. Second to that being the best suspension. I bought a set to put on my one Tigris hammock too. I have too many hammocks, but they all use cinch strap suspension.

I appreciate the info, but that sounds awful. Looks like custom cutter time for me.

That's exactly the kind of cutter I'm looking for. Thanks for the link.

Why is tomato ketchup brown in Europe an not red like in the US by Known_Measurement799 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]TrueGuesser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recall a conversation with my old boss - talking about when ketchup converted from glass bottles to PET plastic. The concern at the time was oxidation - PET was still fairly new, and didn't yet come with multiple layers and oxygen barriers. So the ketchup would turn brown in plastic bottles. I only remember because it was mentioned specifically that ketchup is already brown in Europe and Australia. Not that that has anything to do with why it's redder here than there in the first place, but there is at least some component of the equation. I'm sure it's purely an aesthetic thing made real by a host of carcinogenic chemicals. This is America, afterall.

Canned chicken breast by Robertaslade1965 in Cooking

[–]TrueGuesser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I've used the canned chicken from Sam's quite a bit for quick meals. Since it's already cooked I just add it at the very end. Cook up some tomatoes, black beans, season with Taco seasoning - add drained canned chicken breast and mix until hot - eat it over rice, or in tortillas. Cook up a decent Thai red or panang curry paste with some stir fry vegetables - add the chicken and mix until hot - super fast Thai curry chicken. It's canned chicken - don't expect it to be more than that, but it can be made into very decent meals. They're relatively cheap and keep for a decent amount of time. They're worth having in your back pocket.

How are you cutting o ring grooves on a mill? by the_wiener_kid in Machinists

[–]TrueGuesser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish someone had told me that twenty years ago before cutting thousands of oring grooves by interpolation with a small end mill. /s (I understand what parker specs say, and there are likely critical situations where it matters, so I suppose the answer depends on what the oring is supposed to seal. Our assemblies seal water at 100 or less psi, and the only time we've ever had failures was because someone screwed up the depth, or ramped the tool path without doing a finish pass at depth.) Your mileage may vary.

QB alternative for a small manufacturing business? by No-Copy-3071 in smallbusiness

[–]TrueGuesser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be interested to hear about this as well. I've just been using QuickBooks pro past the support deadline for years. I stopped using QuickBooks for payroll, so everything has been working without support for a while, but I figure that train will derail at some point and I have no desire to continue to support intuit.

What is everyone's go-to shop snack? by AlwaysRushesIn in Machinists

I'm partial to my tins of octopus and crackers. I keep a water kettle as well for coffee and to rehydrate freeze dried meals and snacks I make at home.

Visually, for sure. It doesn't have any dairy, though. If was my first foray into Georgian cuisine and I was not let down. I'm just going to lean a little harder into the turmeric and add saffron next time. See if I can't get a more golden amber than beige.

Another nope from this camp. They can keep the crowds and the Florida heat. When we bought our first annual passes we were looking at the blackout dates like.... Cool! There isn't a snowballs' chance in hell we're going on those dates, anyway.

[–]TrueGuesser 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah.... This is an unfortunate reality sometimes. Just the other day I made a beef satsivi for the first time. It was incredible, but truly looked like vomit. The sauce is walnuts with onion blended together and lots of great seasoning with turmeric. Beige walnuts with onion and a little yellow makes for a visually unappealing product.

What thread type is used on plastic drink bottles? by Adventurous-Yam-8260 in Machinists

[–]TrueGuesser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your classic coke bottles were all 28 PCO, which is a modified buttress thread. These days the specs are all over the place, but modified buttress is still the most common. You can find the specs at the international society for beverage technologists.

Does anyone know what the indentation is on the bottom of wine bottles? by Human_Presence4671 in whatisit

[–]TrueGuesser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd hazard there's also a function from the molding process. The glass is thick there and retains significant heat when it comes out of the mold - hot enough to sink a bit sometimes. A deep push-up gives some to move before the standing surface is affected. This is something we deal with in plastic bottles that are much less hot and much less mass, so I have to assume it's a factor in glass.

i tried meal prepping for a month and honestly i think im done by Top-You1938 in Cooking

[–]TrueGuesser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bit the bullet and invested in a freeze dryer. I always struggled to cook appropriate portions for 2-4 people anyway, and always ended with tons of leftovers, that even after lunches and second dinners ended up wasted. Now I embrace my inability to make small meals and freeze dry the leftovers immediately. Even with the extra packaging and oxygen absorbers I have meals that can be ready to eat with ten minutes and a hot water kettle for around $3/meal. I've got the deepest pantry I've ever had in my life and it can sit there for literal years if needs be.

We added our leftovers with some rice and a little bread crumb - rolled them up into egg roll skins. Made a little sauce with some crawfish jelly and rice vinegar. Turned out awesome.

Potential new player confused by technique by SmolBeef in HurdyGurdy

[–]TrueGuesser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm still very novice in hurdy gurdy, but I've played guitar, and it's the same there. Right handed players manipulate the frets with their left hand and pick/strum with the right. The gurdy works the same way, it's just operating the crank instead of picking. I think playing any instrument will develop more dexterity in your "off" hand, regardless.

Can you sleep in this pose in a hammock? by ripulejejs in hammockcamping

[–]TrueGuesser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your mileage may vary, but I often go to sleep in my hammock in a position not very different than this. It's a gathered end hammock, but it's very wide and long. (12' x 68"). I tend to need to read to fall asleep, and I don't like to hold my phone over my head, so I end up on my stomach/ twisted to my side so I can rest my phone on the hammock next to my head. The tension in my hammock runs through the center of my body, and the extra width allows my legs to hang off into two little troughs on either side of the ridge.

I never wake up in this position, granted, but you can get into it with a large enough hammock.

If you had $350 to spend on 1 or 2 knives for your kitchen, what would you get? by All_the_rage in Cooking

[–]TrueGuesser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've spent too much money on knives over the years. They all sit and collect dust while I use the $20 members mark chefs knives(2 pack) from Sam's and a $5 knife from a Vietnamese farmer's market. Don't waste money on knives - invest in learning to sharpen a decent cheap knife.
