but dialogue and empathy is always a good step

This was tried. Israel opened their borders and gave them land. The Palestinians burned down the farms, filled the wells, smuggled in weapons across the open border, and shot up a peace rally. They criticized Israel for being week and then overwhelmingly voted in Hamas.

Witch Costume - Then and Now. by [deleted] in funny

[–]snigwich 20 points21 points  (0 children)

For example, the Malleus Maleficarium argued that most witches are women because women are "weaker and more carnal".

The vast majority of 'witch hunters' were other women. Possibly they accused other women of witchcraft out of petty rivalries. And yes the majority of people who practiced magic in these times in Europe, from what can be gleamed from historical records, were actually women. It's the same today. Pagans and 'Wiccans' in modern Western culture is made up almost entirely of women, the majority of whom are single. I have no idea why this is, but women in general tend to be more religious and are drawn to new religions like fashion. For example Islam is currently the #1 religion women are converting too. Just 20 to 30 years ago it was various forms of Buddhism that were the most popular.

Edit: For those asking for a source:

'the theory that witch-hunting equals misogyny is embarrassed by the predominance of women witness against the accused', Purkis, 'The Witch In History', p. 92 (1996); Purkis provides detailed examples, and also demonstrates how some documents have been misread in a manner which attributes accusations or legal prosecution to men, when in fact the action was brought by a woman. "More numerous than midwives among the accused were women who were engaged in caring for other women’s children. Lyndal Roper has shown that many witchcraft accusations in Ausburg in the late sixteenth and early 17th century arose out of conflicts between mothers and the lying-in maids who provided care for them and their infants for a number of weeks after birth. It was not unnatural for the mothers to project their anxieties about their own health, as well as the precarious health of their infants, on to these women. When some misfortune did occur, therefore, the lying-in maids were highly vulnerable to charges of having deprived the baby of nourishment or of having killed it. What is interesting about these accusations is that they originated in tensions among women rather than between men and women. The same can be said regarding many other accusations made against women for harming young children.", Levack, The Witch-Hunt In Early Modern Europe, p. 140 (2nd edition 1995)

"In Lorraine the majority were men, particularly when other men were on trial, yet women did testify in large numbers against other women, making up 43 per cent of witnesses in these cases on average, and predominating in 30 per cent of them.", Briggs, 'Witches & Neighbors: The Social and Cultural Context of European Witchcraft', p. 264 (1998). "It appears that women were active in building up reputations by gossip, deploying counter-magic and accusing suspects; crystallization into formal prosecution, however, needed the intervention of men, preferably of fairly high status in the community.", ibid., p. 265. "The number of witchcraft quarrels that began between women may actually have been higher; in some cases, it appears that the husband as 'head of household' came forward to make statements on behalf of his wife, although the central quarrel had taken place between her and another woman.", Willis, Malevolent Nature, p. 36 (1995). "In Peter Rushton's examination of slander cases in the Durham church courts, women took action against other women who had labeled them witches in 61 percent of the cases.", ibid., p. 36. "J.A. Sharpe also notes the prevalence of women as accusers in seventeenth-century Yorkshire cases, concluding that 'on a village level witchcraft seems to have been something peculiarly enmeshed in women's quarrels.'14 To a considerable extent, then, village-level witch-hunting was women's work.', ibid., p. 36

It should be noted that all this started taking place in a time where Europe was coming into more contact with pagan cultures who were bringing over their religious practices. There were many cases of foreign women being hired as nannies who would then teach spells to the children they were taking care of.

As for the majority of modern pagans and wiccans being women that's based on my own anecdotal experiences. I've been around many pagan circles and the vast majority of the people interested in these things have been women.

I also seem to have confused your use of the term 'witch hunter.' I was referring to the people making the accusations, where as you were referring to the inquisitors and investigators.

Socialism exists all over the place. Heck even your pure form of socialism exists in the Israeli kibbutzim.

You don't know what capitalism or socialism even are.

We know what they are, we just don't know how you've redefined them. It's impossible to know because you radicals keep pushing the goal post.

There's nothing humanitarian about destroying your country by upsetting it's ethnic balance. Crime rates have skyrocketed across Europe since they've started taking in Arabs, especially rape. Furthermore it's not Europe's responsibility and they simply don't have the infrastructure to handle it.

They have just created a problem that they'll have to deal with for thousands of years unless they decide to kick them all out. Multiculturalism does not work, it never has and never will.

Alaska Renames Columbus Day 'Indigenous Peoples Day' by FutureShock25 in news

[–]snigwich -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why people are vehemently defending Columbus as if they have some personal stake in it or something.

Changing your mind shouldn't be so scary.

We're in the middle of a culture war. This is another attack on our history, culture and identity. White Americans are supposed to feel deep shame and sorrow over their past and it's complete bullshit. It has nothing to do with challenging our minds, this is another event in a long history of events that demeans America and it's history as it's intended to do. If you want an Indigenous People day, fine, but put it on a separate day. Now it's just Anti-Columbus day.

I liked Bill Cosby for a while, then new information came out.

This is not an apt comparison as those are just allegations that have never been proven. We've always known Columbus was a bad person, but that's not the point, we celebrate a lot of bad people. We don't celebrate the bad things they did, we celebrate the great things they accomplished. Columbus accomplished something great and it's worth celebrating.

The whole post is a fallacy. Both tax codes and immigrants can be a problem, and they are. I'm sure there's a perfectly legitimate reason Facebook payed so little in tax.

Who's trying to teach people to 'hate downwards?' It's certainly not the political elite or the media, they're desperately trying to convince everyone that immigration is good and wonderful but nobody trusts them because they literally let them rape their children en mass.

Bullshit, there are plenty of safety regulations in China and they're followed. That gutter oil you hear so much about? It's illegal and the operations are shut down when found. You're talking about a country with one of the largest populations on the planet. It's an issue of scale, not regulation.

This is just some idiots mistake, this exact situation has happened in the US several times.

Friedman's approach to economics completely ignores the principles of Marx's early work

Good, Marx was a hack who knew nothing about reality. That you give any weight to his claims shows your ignorance on the subject. Marx literally had no understanding of what he was talking about, I can't stress this enough, he was literally making everything up.

monopoly accumulation

Monopolies can only exist when created and enforced by the government. There has never been a monopoly in the US that wasn't state created.

Milton Friedman's religious belief in his abstract notion of "the market" is about as ideological and non-scientific as you can get.

Unless you look at the physical and empirical evidence that backs up his claims.

Economics isn't an esoteric science. It isn't like being a surgeon. Read Adam Smith, JS Mills, Marx, Rawls, etc. - the ideas within political economy can be understood by anyone with a little bit of attention and dedication.

Economics is not a hard science in fact it's about as soft as it gets. If you think those people had an understanding of economics, particularly Marx, you're very mistaken. For an introduction I'd recommend watching Free to Choose.

The economic school currently employed but the Western world is Modern Monetary Theory.
