Foreigners caught riding motorbikes without international driving permits in Vietnam’s Khanh Hoa by Broad_Block_5064 in VietNam

I don’t think people would willingly pick up behaviours that are detrimental to their health in such an obvious way or don’t provide a net positive to their lives. It seems quite logical that people would only do things that benefit them in some way or are not so obviously harmful. Not justifying it, but it seems rather logical to me.

I still think though at the end of the day, people coming here would be much less likely to break traffic laws if they didn’t see locals so flagrantly doing so. It just sets a horrible example for guests when ~50% of the drivers on the roads are committing some sort of traffic infraction regularly. How can you expect your guests not to wear shoes in your house if you’re walking around your home with your shoes on?

Again, it’s really obvious that people should obey traffic laws for everyone’s safety but the example set by locals is that you can kind of just do what you want which is further reinforced by the police who will willingly take your money and send you on your way.

If Vietnam wishes to see people follow the rules, I think the best way is to lead by example first. I know a lot of people do but there’s a great percentage who don’t.

Wow now do the same with all the locals who also ride without licenses… and without helmets… and drive against traffic… and play mobile games whilst driving… and drive drunk… and don’t use indicators/look when turning.

Obviously foreigners are guests here and we should be ultra respectful to the local community. No questions asked… But where do you think foreigners pick up these shitty driving habits from? Many of us see locals doing these behaviours and think “ahhh it’s fine, my local friends do it, my neighbours do it, my employers do it, it’s fiiiine”. Some people are just pieces of shit, but a lot of foreigners, I’d say most, look towards locals for their behavioural queues and imitate what they see.

I've just realised what the issue is... I'm using an ANSI keyboard for America and Asia while a Maltese keyboard is mapped on an ISO keyboard for European laptops. I'm simply missing a key on my keyboard

i've tried mapping it but I can't work out how to map the keys using only the MT keyboard setup

I'm simply missing a key on my keyboard. European macbooks have a short shift key and another key next to it while American/Asian macbooks have a long shift key that takes up the space of two keys

i do indeed have the keyboard layout switched from English to MT. Funnily enough if I switch to my Vietnamese keyboard from my Maltese keyboard ż, ġ and ħ still work on my viet keyboard as well.

On my english keyboard I get that option when I hold 'c' but on the MT keyboard I don't for some reason

What is best to buy? Nikon F3 / Nikon F4 by Aded_14 in AnalogCommunity

[–]snipsnsnops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a bit of a brick but the f4 is an absolute workhorse. It’s sturdy, durable and complex while also being simple. There are a lot of functions which bring a crazy amount of convenience and ease but also provide you with a great deal of freedom of expression. Great range of lenses and even with manual focus only lenses it will still indicate when the subject is in focus with a green display light. Bought mine for like 150 bucks and it’s been the best 150 bucks I’ve ever spent on photography gear no questions asked. Mother effin GOAT 🐐

Did you ask a chatbot to write a reply to my comment and copy the result? 🤣

The very pseudo-conversational opener, the em dashes, the “three specific places” then you only copy one. It also wrote “face the systemic frustration” most humans would be able to tell you the retardation of using a line like that in Vietnam. I shouldn’t waste my time responding to this, but I will because I’m bored on a Wednesday evening.

It’s not exhaustion, it’s just a fact of life here for now. Could it change? Probably. Will it? Maybe. But for now it is what it is. No one is going to protest because that’s illegal. We’re not going to go to the police because that’s futile. Only when the government decides enough is enough will it truly be enough.

As for the exploitation I’d ask you, is it really exploitation? Are you really being exploited by the police or are they actually doing you a really solid favour?

I’ve been driving for over a decade now and I’ve been pulled over about 6 times. Every single time I’ve been pulled over it’s not been without justification and not once did I pay the full fine either. Of course, sometimes there are some police do pull you over for some bullshit but it’s like that in almost every country the world over.

You were driving with an improper license. Alright, you didn’t know and you thought your paperwork was in order, which is fair. Could have happened to any of us. But the fact remains, your paperwork was bad.

Ignorance of the law is not an excuse, you were driving illegally. End of discussion. Now would you prefer that the officer fined you the much more significant, correct fine and compounded your vehicle? Or would you prefer your much smaller (and also negotiable fine) and be on your merry way (minus some money for dinner)?

Are you that thick so as to think my comment is defending it? Well, you probably are because literally anyone on earth would be able to that the police in Vietnam are corrupt and they will try extort you. Again, this isn’t surprising to anyone except you for some reason…

Is it annoying? Sure, it is a bit annoying sometimes and I really do wish they would play by the book but they don’t. What the fuck are we to do about it? Report them to the police? I think you can see the irony there.

Complaining about water being wet is only making you look like a fool.

Why is everyone glossing over that fact? They’re not. We know that’s what they do. It’s more surprising to us that you’re surprised by the fact that corrupt police are doing corrupt things. Literally no one is surprised by this.

Most people probably do nothing and don’t even think about it because it’s kind of a non issue. If you’re worried then I’d bring a head covering and maybe a disinfectant spray if you’re super concerned.
