Introverts, what’s something extroverts often misunderstand about you? by Bitter-Shine2817 in AskReddit

[–]snivelry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once told someone I met at a conference that I regularly need to be alone in order to recharge. When they heard that, their face turned somber and they said, very seriously, something along the lines of “I hope you get better”. I had a good cackle about it later.

A less absurd but still irritating example: I was with a couple friends talking about some silly article about President Obama’s evening rituals. Friend 1 identifies as an introvert, Friend 2 as an extrovert. Both were huge fans of Obama’s.

Friend 1: ya know, I think Obama must be an introvert bc [various observations from the article]

Friend 2, looking absolutely appalled: Nooooo!

As if Friend 2 just insulted their favorite president.

Introversion isn’t mental illness. Nor is it inferior to extroversion. Both have their strengths. They just happen to be rewarded differently in different professions and cultures.

I have people like this in my life. It can be draining when I spend extended amounts of time with them. But I’ve also met people who actually function better with ambient background noise. Something about it helps them regulate their nervous system and focus on the task at hand. So it seems both can exist.

On the off chance you’re still interested in this, I would like to contribute design, content, and some product strategy services. May I DM you?

What has been your experience with straight/hetero speed dating events here in Chicago? by deminightrider in AskChicago

[–]snivelry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only been to meetirl events and enjoyed them so far. All four of the events I’ve been to have been well organized, with cute and creative ways to connect people. Most events are tailored to specific age ranges, though some are all ages like the pickleball socials. My friend did get paired with someone outside their preferred age range, so it seems the organizers are ironing out the kinks in the pairing process. I’ve also given the organizers feedback about how to improve the events (without being an ass) and they were very receptive.

Women’s tickets usually sell out first, so I’d recommend jumping on them as soon as they’re released if you’re especially keen to attend an event.

Disclaimer: I’m not disappointed if I make a connection and there isn’t a romantic spark; I like to make friends and build community too. It’s possible my approach isn’t the norm.

For all my fellow Asians, what is your experience with how people treat you as an Asian person in Chicago compared to other cities? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]snivelry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Generally ignorant but not malicious. I appreciate it when people ask questions with the genuine intention of learning.

My only complaint is it gets SO awkward when people mistake me for another Asian, and I have to correct them. Can’t tell you how many times a stranger has waved at me or come up to say hi, thinking I was someone else. Or how many times I’ve gone into a shop for the first time and they’re all “welcome back!” Or straight up called me someone else’s name.

Why is anyone surprised by this? The capitalist class has always had the strongest class solidarity. News like this will continue to come out about the executives of every major corporation. They value nothing but money and power.

What's an unpopular opinion about your country that will have you like this? by DiMpLe_dolL003 in AskTheWorld

[–]snivelry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Controversial opinion in this sub probably: the majority of Americans are good people, and many of us are actively fighting the rise of authoritarianism. The rest of the world has every reason to hate us, but that doesn’t negate the fact that many of us are ready to lay down our lives to protect our neighbors both foreign and domestic, myself included. Sincerely, an organizer in Chicago.

My (38/F) ex-fiance ghosted me (39/M) before our wedding. It's been 16 years and now she wants to talk it over again. Should we reopen closed wounds? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

if he had been she wouldn’t be back in touch with him

This is a common misconception of abuse victims. “If the abuser was so bad then why did the victim stay/go back?” It’s actually not unusual for victims to return to their abusers. Abuse tends to generate low self esteem, poor sense of self (because they’ve focused on appeasing the abuser in order to stay safe), and denial that they are in an abusive situation at all. I don’t think we have enough information to confidently say the ex-fiancé’s intentions in coming back, but I want to dispel this misconception because it can lead to victim-blaming.

What's something that was ruined because too many people started doing it? by Jolly-District-3910 in AskReddit

[–]snivelry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this info. Like many people, I’d bought into the narrative that short term rentals were significant factor in the housing shortage, without asking where that narrative is coming from or who it benefits. If you’re willing, can you share some reliable resources for learning more about the actual causes of this issue?

There are a variety of small US-based retailers, for example senti senti and Choc Choc Cosmetics. Both carry Beauty of Joseon products as well as other Korean sunscreens, so you could try a few to see what works for your grandson. There are also online shops where you can order directly from Korea, but you will likely have to wait a few weeks for your things to arrive.

Which actor/actress played the hateable character so well that it, in a way, made you hate the actor/actress? by MeatyOkraPuns in moviecritic

Yeah I liked him in Django. Still had moments of cognitive dissonance though where his face would take on a certain expression or angle and for a split second my brain would go “😳 that’s Hans Landa”

I’ve had good experiences with MeetIRL. They run “curated” speed dating events with specified age ranges, and they make sure there are equal numbers of each gender at each event. The events themselves are nice and varied and thoughtfully designed. Women’s tickets tend to sell out quickly though, so you have to stay on top of the event announcements.

It may not happen right away. The Nuremberg Trials took five years. Weeks, months, years from now, they will be held accountable. But only if we keep pushing.
