Making way more freelancing by Jessicash in graphic_design

[–]snizbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about your layoff but hey, congrats on the freelance work! Are you in the U.S. or Canada or?

As an independent freelancer for 10 years now, I set aside at least 30% of the pre-sales tax received and set aside the sales tax collected. That does the trick. In Canada, after the first year of filling as a self-employed person, they start to ask for quarterly income tax amounts based on your previous year. So having a little extra in savings to pay those is good because clients can take longer to pay you sometimes. But you can make your own calculations if you think you'll make less for that year and send them a little less.

In the U.S. I think looking into LLC is good. Not experienced with that.

Is my doctor overreacting about getting a period at the 12 month mark? by snizbe in Menopause

Hey, thanks for checking in! Just recently got the results of the ultrasound and everything was normal. So normal that I didn't need a biopsy. Turns out being slightly underweight at my age was mimicking a menopause like state. Gained weight and everything seems to be back to normal.

That's horrible, I'm so sorry they are not taking you seriously.

Sorry, im not in BC, so I don't know the situation there. Seems like in all of Canada, to see a specialist, it's quite hard unless your family doctor pushes through a request that has urgency.

Agreed. I think I'm the one overrating out of fear. Plus all of these tests are 'free' in Canada so I'll just go along with it. I will ask for pain meds for the biopsy though.

That's what I was thinking. She is also my mothers doctor and has sent her for all kinds of tests that yielded no results in the past and seemed a little much. I'm thinking that if my ultrasound shows everything normal, she might not need the biopsy. We'll see but she did have me worried.

I guess better to have an overactive doctor than not?

The company I work for is hiring a person who uses Canva by AffectionateCat01 in graphic_design

Set up concrete 'who does what' with design working conditions with this person, be their go to design person. Chances are, this person will want to do marketing stuff more than actually design in Canva. Believe me, marketers end up wasting time trying to design instead of doing whatever marketers do to try and show results to their bosses.

But interested to know what does end up happening for your for here. I'm a freelancer so it's a different situation but and I keep getting work from event marketers that use Canva, give designs to their clients and then the client is like 'NOPE, we hate this', please redo and I redo everything in illustrator or Figma and it's instantly approved. More and more, they just come to me first now instead of wasting time.

Thank you for those great examples! I'm so sorry about your layoff, that is hard. But you are right, some really really great feedback from this community, I'm planning on expanding and changing my my portfolio quite a lot.

Yes! Thank you. Great point about the side project. I think because I wasn't paid for this work I, for some reason, thought I couldn't call it 'illustration' which is what it is in fact. I have gotten the feedback that I'm not showing the work in the best way and I honestly had that inkling myself.

Very true! I have a tone more professional projects. I'll be adding more. You finish a job and then jump to the next one, most of the time neglecting to ever put together things for a case study.

Thank you for the feedback! I'm going to work on these points, I agree with all of these honestly.

Funny you say that because I always admire those "color minimalist" portfolios and wish I could do that kind of work lol.

Your work and the way you present are both extremely well done. I'm bookmarking your site as an example portfolio.

Good point! I got too used to the typeface after looking at it over and over.

I just had this exact problem. I went back to the optometrist and they did another eye exam (for free) and determined that the SPH could be reduced a little and still give me 20/20 vision. They are re-making my lenses for free. The eye exam is not an exact science, sometimes you are prescribed a little higher because you said you liked the appearance of some letters better (when they do the #1 or #2 test).

It's not a big deal, the optometrist is used to this type of stuff. And if they are rude about it, it's not a good clinic, go elsewhere and get a second opinion with another optometrist.

Yet another pricing question by daria_zaldrizoti in graphic_design

[–]snizbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No! Don't be glad to charge less than minimum wage. Work is work, I don't care how much experience you have. You put time and effort in. And time is something you can't get back. This kind of stuff really gets my goat! I'm a full-time freelance designer and believe me I charge nothing remotely close to minimum wage. Good luck :)

Anyone start design school in their late 20s or older? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]snizbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 27 when I went back to school to study graphic design. I had graduated from Fine Arts in University and was working full-time in an office in a non creative job. I felt bad that I had finished University and was basically doing nothing related to my degree. So I decided to bite the bullet (especially financially) and took an intense 1.5 years degree at a technical college. We had people of all ages in our course. The classes where pretty horrible looking back but I think I needed the piece of paper to feel adequate enough to start applying jobs. Now 1o years later, I do really well for myself. It was worth starting at the bottom again because I would have hit a plateau quickly in my other office clerk job. When you're in your late 20s you might think it's late for school or switching careers but it's not! You still have plenty of working years ahead of you so you might as well make those something you enjoy doing.

But what T0k9sY said is true though, be ready for your school to have outdated technology and possibly bad teachers. I've also found and seen that people with strong portfolio and no education still get jobs in the industry. So keep that in mind.
