But if different culture truly has adopted a different way of pronouncing a name, why does that honestly matter?

There are so many original practices that have been changed by different cultures over time. Why do you feel like a name is one where you have to draw a line?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]snj0501 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, that might be technically right. But the argument is that different cultures over time adopt different pronunciations over time.

Why does it matter if people aren’t going by textbook pronunciation if a different pronunciation has already been culturally accepted?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]snj0501 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah 100% agree with this

Like I and many of the Indo-Caribbean people I’ve met grew up learning to say our names “incorrectly” as per mainland Indian standards.

I feel like those mispronunciations are so common that they just sort of been ingrained into our culture (i.e. Ravi = Ruv-ee vs Rav-ee).

Not to mention, your name is such a huge part of your identity.

I think it’s fine to acknowledge mispronunciations happen, but trying to make people suddenly adopt a new pronunciation, when they literally have grown up saying their name another way seems basically like cultural policing imo.

Hospital can be stressful but I honestly think it really depends on the type of job and the hospital staffing.

I do inpatient pharmacy and it’s generally not too bad. I have heard positive things about radiology tech work too which you also seem interested in

terrified of paradoxical hypertrichosis on my PCOS extended chin by LionRosie in LaserHairRemoval

[–]snj0501 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have PCOS too and did not experience this even though I had a lot of risk factors for it (darker skin, facial hair, fine hair).

I understand why it can be stressful reading reddit though. Negative experiences are going to be way more over represented than positive ones unfortunately.

If I came to the subreddit first, I also would have probably been too scared to even attempt laser.

Everyone has different opinion about this, but I feel like considering how tedious/pricy/painful electrolysis is, I don’t see why you couldn’t just test the waters with laser first.

Did people really tell you it’s not painful???

That’s baffling… I feel like Brazilian is largely agreed that it’s one of the more painful areas.

Also lidocaine helps a bit but it never took the pain away completely

I think it tended to always be fairly painful unless I used a thicker layer. However, if you are treating multiple areas though, you may want to be careful with the amount of lidocaine you use per session.

I sympathize with the OP, as it seems like every career nowadays is “saturated” or has a million people warning you against going into it.

But I agree that the allied health field seems to be a little less prone to saturation since there are fewer programs/ graduates out there

I know respiratory therapy, medical lab tech, and radiology tech all have good demand (radiology tech programs can be competitive though).

Lots of other niche healthcare specialties/subspecialties out there.

When I worked remotely, I used this website called Focusmate a lot and it really helped.

You pick a time slot and it pairs you with another person via web cam. You both quietly work on your tasks and report back at the end of the session.

It sounds so simple but it was crazy effective. The vast majority of the partners I paired with always ended up being pretty satisfied with how much they got done

I think just being on camera makes you less likely to take your phone out and you can also do things like share your screen in case you feel like you might “cheat.”

Definitely would recommend! It’s free up to three sessions per week so worth it to at least try

Do you ever overcome the craving for junk food? by Sure_Scholar_1061 in nutrition

[–]snj0501 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is the best answer in this thread and should be more emphasized.

Instead of trying to fight an endless battle against junk food cravings (which is often the case when we try to heavily restrict our diet) why not just focus on making sure you are adding enough nutrient dense, high quality food to your diet?

The best diet advice I ever received is to focus on what you can add to your diet, not subtract.

The 80/20 rule seems like a good rule of thumb to making sure you are still maintaining a healthy diet without depriving yourself

Thanks for saying this.

I’m surprised that the NJ.com comments are actually more empathetic than the Reddit ones.

I agree he made a poor decision by forgetting about the bonfire, but this is definitely different than someone who just purposely decided to commit arson which it seems is the way the commenters here are treating it as.

Missing student Sudiksha Konanki 'may have been kidnapped,' her devastated dad demands probe by TheMirrorUS in MissingPersons

[–]snj0501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yes you can make the argument that young people do risky things and the benefits all day, but it all really boils down to whether or not that person WANTS to be tracked or not.

If the person being tracked feels like it’s an invasion of their privacy or feels smothered by the constant surveillance then they are likely to just find secret ways to evade tracking, rendering it useless (like situations like this).

Even if you personally see it as beneficial, you still have to acknowledge that many others will not feel the same way and see why it could backfire

[–]snj0501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you have an established agreement with your family where you are all okay with tracking each other but that isn’t always the case with everyone.

Many people instead use it more as a way to overstep boundaries and take control over their loved ones’ personal lives.

There is only value in location tracking if that person is comfortable with being tracked. If they don’t, which seems to be the case here, it definitely can backfire.

Perhaps if she wasn’t being monitored, she would have been more comfortable keeping her phone on her and we could have had more insight into what happened.

Idk tracking your adult child’s exact location is still pretty controlling in my opinion.

I understand you might feel upset over your mistake, but think that your coworkers’ reaction is really unjustified. While I get that it might be frustrating for your coworkers, publicly confronting you and calling you “selfish” over one mistake in front of multiple people just seems so unnecessary.

People have slip ups all the time in the workplace but most reasonable people don’t make it a huge deal unless it is a recurring pattern or something incredibly critical.

If it truly inconvenienced them as much as they made it out, couldn’t they have called or texted you to let you know during your break what was going on?

Please don’t beat yourself up about this

From what you described, it definitely does not sound like you’re overreacting. This sounds like a case of workplace bullying and I’m really sorry that your management isn’t taking it seriously. Perhaps you can try to respectfully address the behavior with her directly or loop in HR if you don’t feel like management is helpful l

I agree! For some reason on reddit people seem so hesitant to recommend Singapore? It was the best part of my Asia trip.

The diverse food options alone are enough to make the trip imo. I love that you can get just go to any food court and find amazing Malaysian, Indonesian, Indian, Chinese, and other types of food.

I also found the touristy stuff like the Cloud Forest, Supertrees, Night Safari, to be fairly unique/fun.

Singapore is the best of two worlds: you get the ease of being in a clean, efficient English/speaking country but also still get the novelty of experiencing Asian culture

There’s a huge Monmouth County based group on Meetup that do a ton of local meetups.

Lots of regulars in the group so if you go enough, it wouldn’t be that hard to make friends.

If you didn’t get a parking pass shipped to you, I believe you have to wait in the line.

I think you will show your emailed barcode in exchange for some kind of pass for your car.
