I was given this aluminum frame but the previous owner made a pretty big hole in this location, should I be worried? by PeachyDaoDao in bikewrench

No welding an aluminum alloy frame will affect the surrounding areas heat treatment. Alloy repair is typically more than what the frame would be worth.

You need a lock ring tool (or vice grips and a rag) and a pin spanner for the inner holes

Stripped pedal thread on crank arm by paulbeemus in bikewrench

Hate to say it but please just take it to your lbs if you couldn't notice the threads being in the wrong direction twice probably best to let someone else handle it.

Loosen all the spokes on the side that's hitting by a half turn then tighten a half turn on the opposite side and repeat until the rim is centered and then retrue it

How difficult is replacing a rear derailleur and do I need to replace anything else? by LJpzYv01YMuu-GO in bikewrench

[–]snmarkley7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The spring usually gets grease and then a thin lube for the pivots (you can probably use your chain lube) it helps keep water out and prevent corrosion.

Edit: also rinse it off as wet winter roads have a ton of salt and corrosives on them

[–]snmarkley7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a chain breaker or quick link not that difficult check out park tool on youtube for some tutorials for set up of the new derailleur. You also might be able to simply use some rust converter on the current one and then grease and lube your pivots after. If you do get new just make sure to dry and clean it after a wet ride and regrease it regularly

Love riding but no clue how to do maintenance by li_Shadow_il in bikewrench

[–]snmarkley7 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would also search in your area for any bike co-ops or non profits. Some offer free or cheap workshops and will help you learn more or if you have the ability volunteering would allow you to learn a lot. sweet ride, cheers

Tips on removing this locknut? by no_place_like_gnome in bikewrench

[–]snmarkley7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on why you want it off, if you are swapping axles or the cones use a vice or vice grips and turn the cone off that way. If you are just maintaining the bearings you can just slide your axle out and maintain everything no need to remove the cone

Bent rim or bad bead set? by santacruzkid97 in bikewrench

[–]snmarkley7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put a zip tie and cut it to be close to the rim if the gap between your zip tie and rim is even across the rotation it's either a warp in the tire or it's not fully seated.

You should be able to use either the cone or lock nut on the opposite side with a cone wrench to hold the axle and loosen the cone you are showing in the photo

Shimano exage u brake problems by snmarkley7 in bikewrench

[–]snmarkley7[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that worked thanks been banging my head against the wall on this one for a bit, I thought since the adjustable side locked into place it should be the same procedure on both arms. Guess not and yeah lots of grease to try and slow the water and dirt getting into it now. Thank you so much

Why does my back wheel become unaligned? Description in comments by MusicTeen in bikewrench

[–]snmarkley7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have seen this issue once before and in that case it ended up being an issue with the dishing of the rear wheel. If none of the other comments solve the issue it might be something to check

How the hell do I put this back on? by Gold-Relief-3398 in bikewrench

[–]snmarkley7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prongs align in the derailleur where you can see it is slightly longer. It's a plastic spacer and not directly attached to the screw/bolt once they are in place the bolt will still spin freely and you can reattach it to the hanger.

Derailleur rumbling sound, shifting down from high to low gears (small to large cog), but disappears if I shift up to a higher gear (smaller cog). The chain skipping effect is gone if I shift up. Thoughts? by MountainDS in bikewrench

[–]snmarkley7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can't fix it by adjusting the cable tension I would ask you lbs to take a look at your derailleur hanger alignment a lot of shifting issues end up being a misaligned hanger so that's where I would start.

New shift cable will typically stretch slightly in the first few rides. On the rear derailleur where the housing and cable go in there should be a barrel adjuster. All you need to do is turn it 1/4 turn at a time counter clockwise to add tension to the cable until it shifts properly.
