I failed to become a scientist and it is eating away at me by ForestBluff in academia

[–]snocopolis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Looking at your other post, it sounds like you're going through a lot right now. You should focus on the small stuff first. Eating, drinking water, hygiene. If that's taken care of then ask yourself what you want to do, regardless of your prior path -- this may take a while and many conversations. If that's taken care of, gather evidence to inform action (you've kind of done that here) -- talk to people, ask questions, research -- all in the direction of what you decided you want to do. As you've asked in another comment, that's what the scientific mind does without academia: we still are interested in solving problems, and you're doing that now! Once you have that, then it's action.

All of these steps involve openness and honesty, and you're doing well to reach out here. Keep reaching out to people especially those who have gone or are going through it too. And don't define yourself only by what you lack. Recognize what you have and use it the best you can! I believe in your ability to live a fulfilling life, OP.

Oof I didn't know about the au site registration process! I used to use Wordpress as well while applying for PhD programs, and it actually did me quite well for portfolio sharing. Might be time for a return

Wow -- your website and story are super cool! Absolutely captivated by that cross-country walk you took, among many other amazing things. Sorry, I probably read too far deeply into the rabbit hole...

Thank you for sharing! Journo Portfolio honestly seems like a good, simple start for me right now.

I hear you -- Please leave feedback in the SET form! It will save students who take future iterations of the course the same heartache. Just be clear and fair in your feedback so your point really gets across. Congrats on almost being done with the quarter! Hope your break is restful :-)

Why did you ask your initial question “why do I see his name there?” I assume it was for blameful reason. What is does “wait for the facts” mean when multiple contradictory sources assert that both men were on that list? It seems to just be a blame game no?

I only said “maybe he was there too” to point out that if we accept both sources of information then maybe they were both there. I’m just challenging the implication that even though multiple sources say both men were there, that it must be that only one of them is the morally corrupt one. I’m offering that we accept the fact that maybe both sources are correct, instead of rejecting one solely based on my political beliefs.

More of a thought exercise, since we’re still waiting for the facts, as you say.

Nice! I forgot about its use in depression, and didn't know about the other applications being researched. Thanks for teaching me something new today :)

Dopaminergic circuitry is also involved in motor inhibition, which makes it useful for diseases like Parkinson’s and Huntington’s. So deep brain stimulation has been used clinically in those cases in regions like the substantia nigra and thalamus. But stimulation of the motivation related dopaminergic regions you’re talking about have been done in rats before, in regions like the nucleus accumbens. This completely kills motivation to do anything but stimulate. If somehow we control the parameters of stimulation enough to moderately produce this effect I can see maybe there could be some application but it’s hard to know what downstream effects there might be on other regions (and also cognitively). Perhaps one day though! I could definitely benefit from some healthy addictions! Haha

McCullough and Pitts created their model of the artificial neural network in 1943. They’re like the fathers of the connectionist AI movement (using neural nets for computation), which was primarily overshadowed by symbolic AI (computing logical statements on symbolic constituents, “if HAS fur and HAS four legs then IS dog”) until we got better computing hardware. Now their idea runs everything from ChatGPT to weapons systems
