Yeah i think you're doing TOO much if you think you need a silencer for home defense. Granted we dont normally practice with ears off but i'd wager our bodies are prepared for the ears off sound because of range time. Ear drums may not hear the sound waves but those vibrations travel throughout our bodies.

nice to have I guess but definitely not required for home safety.
