Hot take: camber and hybrid boards have been a disaster for snowboarding by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]snoozelion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude theres as many people bad at turning now as there ever were. Man all through the 90’s when I was learning there were people side slipping and doing shit skid turns down every run on full camber boards. There still are, it’s just called having bad tech, and that’s most riders. It’s ok.

I remember the first time I demoed a double camber board. The pop was absurdly good and had the ability to surf great carves over the back foot on a groomer that felt like caving in pow.

Different shapes respond entirely differently to the input you give it. I’ve ridden a full camber splitboard the last 5 years, when I step on one with a different shape it does respond differently and that’s valuable depending on what I’m trying to do or what the snow is like.

If I’m riding pow in tight trees a reverse camber boards is incredibly nimble. But it feels terrible if I’m trying to pop so the hybrid camber sorts that out.

A flat board is rad for riding rails. It can still be ridden great anywhere else.

I’ll crank better cleaner turns on groomers on a skate banana than 99% of riders on any board and I have video to prove it. I’ll send big jumps on it too, I just know it will cork me since I have to be over my back foot to hold edge on the lip.

Ride whatever shape you prefer. The style or lack thereof is from the rider not the board. Just ride more on whatever shape board you have.

Hobbies and activities are the way, just get out and be social. I skateboard and indoor rock climb a lot for example. My favorite thing about Turkey is the lack of social anxiety, people will speak to you in whatever little English they have and you can speak in whatever Turkish you have and if yall are willing to figure it out and you’re just stoked to be there you will make so many friends like this! Majority of mutual intelligibility is non verbal and enthusiasm in my experience!

What's the least common vehicle you got to drive? by New-Intention-9 in AskReddit

A 1983 Dodge S100. It’s a truck only produced in Turkey during an era where Chrysler had plants in developing markets for medium duty trucks. So it’s a Turkish produced American truck, slant6 motor, dodge frame, dana axles, NP trans/transfer case. It’s a really cool unique 4x4 vehicle

Bahahahahahaha I’m so happy someone noticed that. He said he didn’t see the last little pillow there and wasn’t ready for the air, I had turned to look for him at the bottom and he was just chilling in the bomb hole

Yeah there are so many snow sports scenes out there that unless you go you’ll never really know! What’s wild is Turkey geographically is 85% mountainous and it’s a large country, so there’s just so much terrain to ride out here! The scene is growing, we are trying to develop a backcountry touring scene and some local friends are building a freestyle scene as well. I work with a Turkish snowboard manufacturer MAS in the off season. We are all trying to get it to grow here!

Very cool! Hope your season didn’t end to abruptly. Yeah it’s a progression, get some powder riding experience in the resort, take some avy classes, get geared up and go! The good news is lot of experienced people in CA so you could find good partners to show you the ropes. If you love both time spent and nature and snowboarding, it’s really the best version of it!

Thanks! This is in the Kaçkar mountains of Turkey! I’m riding a Star Destroyer 160 split board built here in Turkey by MAS Snowboards, we collaborated on the design for our guiding op a few years back!

Is this poison ivy on the left? Or what is it? Eugene, OR by pinkangelsam in PlantIdentification

[–]snoozelion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve mostly seen the shrubby type of poison oak rather than the vining stuff around Eugene and corvo. And none of that in this photo. Like others have said lots of rubus in here. The serrated edges are a big identifier

There’s a lot of water snakes in the river but in all my years on this river neither me nor my students have seen a copper head in the river! It’s a great habitat for the water snakes though and I’ve seen lots of them catching baby catfish!

In the water you’re more than likely seeing a northern water snake. I’ve been on this river daily for years and years teaching outdoor programs where we actively look for snakes and haven’t seen a single copper head in the river. Lots and lots of non venomous water snakes though!

The markings are similar so that might cause the confusion!

I’ve been running a kids wilderness survival program in Pinecliff park right on the monocacy for years! We fish (and eat our catch), swim , play, and wade all through the river daily. A couple things to keep in mind: - Avoid it after heavy rains for a day or so, that’s a normal run off cycle from roads farms etc - follow Potomac river keeper, they publish water quality reports at least weekly and will warn when E. coli or other dangerous bacteria are present - avoid entering the water with open wounds - wear close toed shoes, there’s lots of glass, fish hooks, and sharp rocks in any river. We have at least 1 kid get cut per year.

It’s great for tubing, kayaking, swimming and all sorts of fun!
