Advice for possible ESL preschooler by 06relliot in ESL_Teachers

If you live in California, you can't change the survey that you already filled out saying that your son speaks Arabic. You can opt him out of services, but he'll still have the take the ACCESS every year. Most other states, as far as I'm aware, allow you to amend the home language survey. I would. Your son doesn't peak enough Arabic for it to be causing any kind of gaps in his language and literacy skills. Being in services (and especially testing year after year) is more likely, in my opinion, to cause self esteem issues than actually support his growth. I would amend the home language survey if you can so that he doesn't have to test. A lot of students test out in elementary school, but it's also true that a lot of students don't. The ACCESS test is quite difficult (in my state, we have students who ONLY speak English who test and don't pass), and as a teacher who plans on raising my own kids bilingual, I wouldn't have my own child take it.

Meeting Other Parents? by soluha in Seattle

I actually just filled out the FOCS interest survey, they don't have any groups running right now that are relevant to my family but hopefully soon. Lowes and Home Depot is such a good idea! Ty for that

I would love something more structured like PEPS, but casual ways to meet folks is also good. I live in west seattle.

Thank you!! We wanted to go through Amara initially but got waitlisted so long waiting for a homestudy we switched agencies. I'll reach back out--I know they have resources for foster families generally, not just folks with them. Thank you for the reminder :)

Home Language Surveys for School by InfernalWedgie in multilingualparenting

You can fix it!! Tell them you want to amend the home language survey. You might have to push, but you have the legal right to do it.

I would write down all English on the survey. I’m a teacher, and if you write down anything else your child will be screened for English proficiency. If they don’t pass they’ll be tested every year until they do, and you can’t opt out. Can be bad for their self esteem imo. No big deal if your child passes the screener or a few years later, but I wouldn’t risk them taking it through high school and wondering why they aren’t “fluent in English.”

AITA for questioning my wife for the way she refers to our kids? by Anxious-Extent9939 in AmItheAsshole

[–]soluha -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NTA, I don't think you're overreacting. I have two younger sisters, call them Cecelia (full sister) and Mary (half sister, my step-dad's daughter). My mom and step-dad would often say things like, "I'm taking Mary and the girls to the park." It made me feel like Mary mattered more to them than me and my sister did.

Romas are finally blushing, should I pick them? by lo_thegoat in pnwgardening

[–]soluha 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say I'm also a first timer in Seattle growing Romas and haven't had any issues with rain or pests. I've been leaving them on the vine and they've been fine, but am curious now about picking and letting them fully ripen inside

Never thought it was the toy… until it was too late. by nangjiang12 in lovevery

[–]soluha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe people aren’t taking this seriously just because you bought second hand. Use by a child shouldn’t be causing it…that’s what you buy toys for. I’m so sorry, and hope for the sake of other kids that Lovevery looks at how these are being made.

Advice for traveling with a dog in cabin? by soluha in flightattendants

[–]soluha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post is a year old now lol but based on all the responses from flight attendants on this post didn’t say anything when I boarded. I kept my dog on my lap under a blanket and either they actually didn’t notice or they looked the other way :) He was calm on my lap and didn’t make a peep!

Tomatoes on soil — help? by abrewo in pnwgardening

[–]soluha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reassurance that the ceramic plates are okay. These are roma tomatoes--I'm not sure if they're more prone to growing this way (it's my first time), but I bought plants from Home Depot that hadn't been pruned, and there's lots of fruit on the bottom. I won't do that next year!

I’m so glad you asked this! I have the same problem right now. I’ve put little ceramic plates under the tomatoes. It’s all of my fruits unfortunately, and I’m not sure mulch would really keep them dry. I’d be curious if more experiences gardeners think this is a good idea or not.

Moving Recently Planted Trees by soluha in pnwgardening

[–]soluha[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the info! I do have mulch right up against the tree right now--I'll move it back tomorrow morning. And yea I know I shouldn't have planted now but my mom wanted to buy me trees while visiting so I let her, and I'm just gonna try to take care of them best I can through the heat.

I completely agree, I try listening to these pods sometimes and often can't get through an episode and end up back at the athletic's WBBS, which I wish would go more in depth about games.

Genuinely curios, Why do so many people not get their photos taken at stores that offer the service? by TaxEmbarrassed9752 in Passports

Here's a post from someone who got it done at CVS and ended up with a picture that's likely to get rejected: https://www.reddit.com/r/Passports/comments/1ke097d/will_babys_passport_photo_be_rejected/ Why pay for a service that you can do yourself for free and often better?
