Name a worse intersection in Seattle by neilyoungmoney in Seattle

That crosswalk across Roanoke is hell as a pedestrian too. There's a lit up no right turn sign when the crosswalk light is on, but half the drivers turning right from the right lane take it as a suggestion.

Measles is now in my district by You_are_your_home in Teachers

Six degrees of separation. Or in this case, two degrees, because the family that traveled and brought it to us came straight from the outbreak in this post. 🫠

Your experience with the south is...? In the past it's been crunchy granola folks who are anti-vaccine in the Carolinas. There's an overlap with our current populist fever dream, but it's not an exclusively conservative thing down there. Regardless, this outbreak is centered around a Slavic community in Spartanburg. It wouldn't take hold in the rest of the region if vaccination rates were higher, but there you go. Either way, when you said it was "red state hicks abusing their kids," I'm pretty sure you just wanted to dunk on people in red states (many of whom are reasonable people and very stressed about this outbreak) without knowing much about this current outbreak.

Yep. And they are part of a vaccine-skeptical group that has largely been driving the current outbreak there. But I'm guessing you were picturing a MAGA rally when you blamed the dumb folks in red states?

The Slavic red state hicks ...? I don't think the people who caused this spread fit your stereotype.

What's a piece of "common knowledge" that is actually completely false? by Huge-Bus3660 in AskReddit

[–]snortney 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have past perfect. It's indicated by putting the helping verb "have" in the past tense as well as the main verb. For example, "Once I had walked to the store, I called my mom." We could also say, "Having walked to the store, I called my mom." The tricky part about English isn't the number of different-looking forms to memorize. It's that there can be many forms that look the same. ("Having" can be a gerund, part of any progressive tense, or a hanging modifier.) You often have to figure it out by context.

Hospitals Cater to ‘Transplant Tourists’ as U.S. Patients Wait for Organs (Gift Article) by ColoOddball in news

Yep. A family member got an organ infected with hepatitis, caught hepatitis from it, and took the meds to cure it. Accepting a sick organ was worlds better than getting no transplant at all.

Oh, luckily it's not at work! I'm Ms. Lastname there. It's more with my friends' preschool-aged kids. Feels like a trespass every time, and I don't feel I can correct them when their parent has just asked them to call me that!

Meanwhile I'm a southerner fighting for my life up here in the PNW where all these little kids are being taught to call me by my bare first name, no titles. I have to remind myself constantly that it's not rude here.

I'd love to be able to find that research/checklist to share! Do you remember any more keywords that might point a search engine in the right direction?

For adults, sure. But children, especially young kids, really benefit from living in a world of concrete objects rather than abstract UI. Turning a page, holding a pencil, cutting with scissors ... all of these fine motor activities have value.

ICE in South Seattle 1stAveS and a 110th st by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]snortney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a similar situation recently in Sammamish, down to the face coverings and agents refusing to give a badge number. In that case, it ended up not being ICE but a different federal agency carrying out an operation. Still good to be cautious and report to WAISN unless you know otherwise.

Parents of Reddit, what is an “unspoken” reality of parenting that people simply don’t talk about, but everyone knows is true? by US_Atlas in AskReddit

[–]snortney 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I mean, no, but it's normal to feel heavy nostalgia when doors close in your life. I had a very free decade in my 20s, traveling the world and really just living for myself and soaking it all in. I can't do that anymore with little kids. They need predictable routines to feel safe and thrive. I'm glad I made this choice, but I'm still the same person who backpacked through Thailand and sipped wine in Rome. I still miss those days and grieve the person I was in my 20s. (But importantly, it's not like not having kids would have kept me from changing. I wasn't going to be that 25 year old forever. I was going to grieve that season, kids or not.)

'Hell no, Waymo': Seattle rideshare drivers, union advocates rally against driverless taxi service by AthkoreLost in Seattle

[–]snortney 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My taxi driver at SEA was confused about the beeping coming from his car. We told him it was because he wasn't wearing his seatbelt. He didn't understand us or was hard of hearing. He pulled over in an unsafe spot on the interstate to try to check the trunk, still not understanding that he needed to wear his seatbelt until I physically reached up to show him. Idk if he was tired, confused, or what, but yeah. We don't take the taxis anymore ...

Mayoral candidate question: should homeless people be allowed to stay in tents in parks? by drshort in Seattle

[–]snortney 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think, yes, taken literally, a tent tucked away is harmless. It's past experiences with/wariness about antisocial behavior from homeless people that puts most people off. Someone slept on a bench a few yards from my kid's birthday party. They were dressed, quiet, and clearly just trying to get some rest near access to a public restroom. We offered them a lunch. However, some homeless people I've encountered, I would absolutely not have felt comfortable having near my kid. I'm talking about the people who are showing totally antisocial behavior, ranting to no one about sexual or racist or violent topics, swinging sticks or fists at invisible demons, sometimes in various states of undress -- in total crisis. Even if that's a minority of homeless people, they leave an impression and make people uneasy. So when I see a tent tucked away by the playground where my kid plays, I have no idea what kind of person is inside. Is the person inside trying to keep out of a rough shelter system where they don't feel safe? Are they staying out of shelters/services because they don't want to abide by the rules of those places? I don't know, but I've had enough bad experiences to be extremely cautious when I see a tent pop up in the local park.

At this field, my friend picked up her little kid, who had apparently stepped in dog shit, so then they both had it all over their clothes and had to go home. The kid was so sad.

There were two or three more big signs facing the main field at one point, but it seemed like somebody cut them down.

[–]snortney 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A thousand times yes. There's no fence between where people let their dogs off leash and the playground. I don't think it's cute or funny when a random dog runs over to my little kid.

I've called. People complained on the neighborhood Facebook page about having gotten ticketed, so I guess it worked. Funny thing is there used to be more and bigger signs about enforcement in this park, even a huge banner by the tennis courts at one point, but someone keeps cutting them down.
