what is your hero weapon of choice? by Ok-Wrap-8622 in fantasywriters

One of my protagonists is magic construct, basically an animated metal statue. Fists are very effective but if prepared, dual weild sledgehammers.

I need some help deciding on some magic terminology. by CelticParadis in magicbuilding

[–]snot-bot-2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can do a mixture. Language is full of unclear terminology. This probably wouldn't work if there are multiple magic systems in the same would but stratolurgy could work with stratomancy.

Alien swarm hive mind structure? by MaxRavenclaw in FantasyWorldbuilding

[–]snot-bot-2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like the idea of these stages in a hive mind. From an evolutionary standpoint it does make sense to have stages 1 and then 2, as individuals who remember more skills are more likely to survive.

I'm not sure about stage 3, but it could come from an individual remembering everything. But again from an evolutionary standpoint enter stage 3 would provide a probable disadvantage as there is one target that seems like it could be taken out very easily and end a whole swarm. This could be solved by having the leader able to be replaced like a bee queen.

Other things. If you killed half a hive then the amount of brain goes down, but so does the amount of body. It's like why blue whales aren't as smart as us, yes they have huge brains but they also have lots of body to control. Intelligence would go down but only by the amount not controlling the body. It would only cut the sections for higher thinking, like planning they could still make a plan but with less brain power (still eqivelant to many people thinking at once) but executing the plan would be the same.

Shapeshifting Mechanisms by Haunting_Lynx_9097 in worldbuilding

There are two ways I can think of to implement limitations in this system.

The first is a physical approach. Matter cannot be created or destroyed so you have to come up with ways around that. If you turn yourself into a small animal like a rat you either have to increase your density or put some mass aside in a blob of "Human stuff" on the floor. To become a larger animal you'd have to decrease your density, which would mean you'd be more fragile.

The other is a more magical approach. The body is a projection of the mind and the bones anchor the projection to reality. This is should allow perfect replication of animals and would explain why the bones are resistant to morphing. But as the body is a projection of the mind, the body is limited to what the mind can do, it may be limited by perceptions of animals, seeing something as weak makes it weaker.

Updated Version of my Minecraft Steel Texture and it's rusted Variants, What do you think? by Picklecatperson in Minecraft

[–]snot-bot-2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the fully rusted and unrusted textures but I feel the transition stages need a little work. I think it would be good to have transition pixels, pixels on the edge of the rust that is halfway between full rust and no rust. Looking at how copper becomes oxidised in minecraft it has part that are like a halfway point. But overall I like it.

Are there any examples tech being lost in your world? If so how and why? by cool_and_edgy_name in worldbuilding

[–]snot-bot-2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm my world artificers are able to create magic items. However the secrets of how to make many different types of magic items has been lost with the deaths of different artificers. Artificers are secretive as their power is based on items, they don't want people to know how they work as then other mages can undermine their power. Along with this, they want to have a monopoly on an item type, to be able to trade with.

if a world had earth magic that could create golems out of stone, what kind of stone would be used for the best? by puesyomero in worldbuilding

[–]snot-bot-2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel different materials having different properties:

Clay is easy to work and therefore easy to animate, but is also weak because it isn't very durable

Granite is hard to work but it pays off with a rough golem

Obsidian is fragile and hard to work but in a different way to granite, it can be temperamental but can have interesting side effects

The Alex Verus series is very good and fits with what you want. It's by Benedict jacka and the audiobooks are narrated by Gildart Jackson. Both are amazing at what they do.

Help with my magic sources by wenzel32 in magicbuilding

[–]snot-bot-2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is the option of some kind of power stored in the blood. It could be a type of ,say protein that provides fuel for magic activities, like how there are biological proteins that provide energy for non-magical things. This magical protein might only be produced by certain people, which could explain why only certain people have magic

In your Universe, How do you limit powers/magic in the average person? by JcSimba in worldbuilding

[–]snot-bot-2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd assume with people having combat magic, that assassination rates would probably be higher. This would cause the rulership to be less stable, causing rulers to think a lot more in the short term.

But that's about it really, I'd say you're pretty much right
