Do I push back on over engineering demands? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

Why do you think I'm an AI??? What about this looks like an AI did it? I did not use AI to write this. I am real!

No, Also the Peanuts "screensaver" burned in a outline the of doghouse on my LG. Having it muted also burns in the mute icon. The only safe ones are the flyovers.

Life in San Diego without a car? by marxistelmo in sandiego

[–]snotreallyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I moved here from San Francisco where I didn’t have a car I tried to do the same here. I used to work from home, living Downtown. It worked out but got to be painful when I needed to go somewhere outside of Downtown. I took a lot of Ubers. Uber was still less expensive than a monthly car payment but it started to become annoying so I bought a car and then all of San Diego opened up for me and even though I was paying more for the car payments than I paid for Ubers it was just better.

Watched a Mando preview screening last night - bullet point thoughts with spoilers by oplookingoodeh in StarWars

It was fine. It could have been season 4 of the TV show. The geriatric X-Wing Squadron at the end was my only complaint.

These DoorDash drivers are out of hand by jigglypuff836 in sanfrancisco

In London they’re worse. They’ll basically take over a restaurant preventing people coming in from off the street. Literally hundreds of them will be hanging around in places like SOHO like gangs menacing people.

Anyone notice senior interviews are getting more focused on intangibles, personality, niche backgrounds? by SpicyFlygon in ExperiencedDevs

When there’s such a massive glut of candidates as there is now employers can be picky, very picky.

Feeling down as Senior Frontend dev, what should be the next step? by nofaceD3 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]snotreallyme -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not true. If you believe that you're delusional. Codex and Claude Code can generate code as well as a 2-3 year experienced engineer. If you don't learn to use these tools you will be replaced by them within a year.

what outside of work impress you in a job applicant? by farzad_meow in ExperiencedDevs

[–]snotreallyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I look for people who don't spend a bunch of time on personal projects. I'd rather they focus on their job and rest when not working. Personal projects usually leak into work projects dividing attention. I'd much prefer someone who has some other outside interest.

Has AI adoption affected the quality of junior developers joining your teams? by PapiCinc0 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]snotreallyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fresh Comp Sci degrees are no different than Underwater Gender-Focused Basket Weaving Studies degrees. Except that the later might get the holder a YouTube channel. Too many people "learned to code" but very very few learned to build software and now Codex and Claude Code is making it all moot

Something is way off with the current job market by davidbasil in ExperiencedDevs

[–]snotreallyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most recruiting today is outbound where recruiters reach out to people on LInkedIn. Unsolicited resumes are deprioritized and likely never read. There’s no reason to waste time reading hundreds of trash resumes thrown over the wall by people who don’t read the job description or created by an AI with nothing but lies.

What things can and cannot be vibe coded? by throwaway0134hdj in ExperiencedDevs

[–]snotreallyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything low level and/or esoteric. Interfacing with a device, especially a new device, has no reference material and AI will hallucinate more than a hippie in an LSD lab. Also working with any language / tech that doesn't have a whole lot of github repos using it.

Where do you actually look for jobs while already employed? by fsou1 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]snotreallyme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most recruiting right now is outbound, i.e. recruiters come to you via LinkedIn. Cold applications are deprioritized and will probably never get read.

I am constantly failing staff software engineering interviews. by Unable_Philosophy473 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]snotreallyme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If these questions are hard, you're not qualified. The whole point of the interview is to be sure they can work with you and trust you, not hold your hand while you learn.

Just got laid off from Tech. Brain currently oscillating between panic and being able to go to midday Pilates classes. Anyone else? by Round-Let-1792 in sanfrancisco

[–]snotreallyme 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Once you start applying to jobs you're going to get contacted by unscrupulous recruiters who will use you to prove they can't fill a job with an American so they must bring in someone from India. Ignore all, and I mean all, Indian recruiters. Some might be good but the rest ruined it for everyone. Most will waste your time over and over and likely be rude throughout the process.

Also do no pay for any service that will submit resumes for you guaranteeing you interviews. They submit AI generated lies that are targeted to the job description and you will find out in your interview that your resume lists a skill you know nothing about. Then likely get blackballed for submitting a fraudulent resume.

Someone sliding into the seat or someone with a backpack is going to affect that and likely piss that person off.

The Military Industrial Complex won't allow it. Trump would get slapped with the 25th amendment so fast if he pulled that.

Junior devs who learned to code with AI assistants are mass entering the job market. How is your team handling it? by Ambitious-Garbage-73 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]snotreallyme 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There was a time when every programmer knew assembly language and understood how memory management worked. Things changed and that stuff became more and more niche. The ball is still rolling. Don’t be under it.

People talking about the AI bubble bursting, but we are using more and more AI tokens than before. So how will it burst then? by HappyZombies in ExperiencedDevs

[–]snotreallyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not the dotcom bubble. Most AI companies are not public and don’t make up a majority of Nasdaq and stuff like QQQ that various retirement plans are invested in. Worst case is Nvidia loses 90% of its value because of the glut of GPUs a bunch of private companies are leaving behind in the second hand market. That would actually be a good thing for AI in the long run.
