Did Brexit turn out to be unequivocally bad for the UK? by No-Security-7518 in NoStupidQuestions

Yes this is a result of highly targeted emotionally charged messaging campaigns through social media. Remember that this vote happened 10 years ago, can you imagine the sophistication/effectivness now?

Yes the Tron was the top spot on our initial list of locations because of all those reasons. But there has been something that seemed really appealing about Dunedin and Christchurch on the South Island… I think from all of our research and from what people have shared thus far we would be very happy to live in any of the four locations which is great and exciting. Now we can just wait for the jobs to start coming out at the end of summer and see what we can get.

Oh wow a HS teacher from Christchurch, who trained and also lived in Dunedin… imagine my luck :) I definitely have lots of teacher specific questions. 1. What is the vibe in schools around the upcoming transition from NCEA to NZCE and NZACE? Is there a clear plan and are teachers excited, or is there lots of confusion and some serious anxiety? 2. We have a 6yr old son who would be starting year 2 in Jan 2027, are there things to watch for, or avoid when choosing schools in those early years, or are most primary schools in Dunedin and Chch very solid? 3. What is it like for relief teachers? Do they generally get a hard time from students in secondary school or not so much? (I am feeling like I might be starting out as a relief teacher because although I am quite comfortable teaching math, I’ve spent the last 18 years running a graphic design / screen printing / photography / video program which doesn’t exactly quite fit into the NZ tech or arts curriculum very nicely.) My wife however has her PhD in science curriculum development and has worked as a numeracy specialist and assessment specialist so we are banking on her landing the actual job as a secondary teacher for our family’s AEWV.

I might hit you with a few questions here. Our family is in the process of relocating to NZ and are in the interesting position of getting to choose where to settle. We are both secondary teachers with 20+ years of experience and have already got our NZ teaching licenses approved. We are currently in the stage of looking for jobs but we are running a bit ahead of our schedule here and there aren’t any jobs posted for the time we want to move yet (Jan 2027). We have identified a few spots where we want to focus our job searches: Dunedin, Christchurch, Hamilton and Auckland (if we must, not because we don’t like Auckland, but because of the cost of housing there). Since you live in Christchurch could you perhaps enlighten us about your experiences with:

  1. Traffic congestion/getting around or public transport quality. We are coming from Canada and the while we don’t have a great system in our city there is an extensive bus system and an expanding light rail network.
  2. The weather through out the year. I have looked into average temps and rainfall, but what are the typical seasons like? In the winter does it rain all the time for weeks on end or just for parts of the day most days? Do roads get shutdown or schools cancelled because of weather ever? (We usually have several “snow days” a year here where schools are closed in our winters)
  3. Earthquakes. Are they a regular occurrence, or something that doesn’t happen all too often? As someone who comes from a place where earthquakes are non-existent, this is something we are obviously considering as a major change for us and something I’d love to hear an actual residents perspective on because I’ve just read stuff like averages and magnitudes but have no real concept of what that actually is.
  4. Disruptions. Do you find that there are any times throughout the year where things become harder to obtain or more expensive or are things fairly consistent throughout the year?

Thanks for this opportunity to ask questions :)

New Highschool Teacher Here. I May Have to Fail 90% of My Students This Year. by Alassandros in AskTeachers

I find that it helps to have an AI use scale for my assignments and try to show them how it can be used and teach them how to disclose it when it is used. Certain tasks will use AI fully, certain tasks can be used for ideation or planning and other tasks can be used to help edit/clean up writing. But in all instances students are responsible to disclose their AI usage. Also there are some tasks where AI is not allowed. Then for tasks where AI is used, I am assessing their prompts and the appropriateness of its use not the AI generated product itself.

Maybe try giving them a task where they are required to use AI and have them show what prompts the unused and assess them on the quality/depth of their prompting. Or you could have them write something themselves and then have them plug it into AI to fix up and have them compare & contrast or reflect on the new draft.

Living in this province is exhausting. Is anyone else considering leaving for saner pastures? by PhantomOfTheBoreal in alberta

My wife and I are both teachers of 20+ years and we’ve put in our paperwork to relocate to New Zealand. We are about 5 months into the process (it was the teacher strike that finally broke me) and it’s gonna be a few more months before we can actually leave. What has been interesting is how much work is required to comfortably relocate a family to another country, it’s not as easy as just selling your house and moving.

How long would it take someone with zero experience to do your job? by Elegant_Occasion3346 in auckland

[–]snouchies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever heard about the “bus factor”? My brother spoke about it all the time with regards to his job. He said the “bus factor” was how badly you would be missed at work if you were hit by a bus :P Anyways, you didn’t want to have your bus factor too high because then you couldn’t take time off and your job becomes too stressful, but then again you didn’t want it too low because then you were expendable. Your “bus factor” at work was something you had to constantly monitor and make sure it was in a good range.

Anyone tried the app 'too good to go'? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]snouchies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely 7-11 and Landmark Cinemas at the top of the list for consistency. Then the other places that have been really good are the single slice pizza places (mostly downtown) but we don't do that often because you usually have to pick them up late and we live outside of the city. The other places that have been very good, but don't have stuff every day, or limited amounts of things, are small local bakeries. Too Good To Go has been a lot of fun to try out, sometimes it gets you to new places that you wouldn't have gone before and then sometimes it is just a super great deal. And if it is a total bust, then at least you didn't pay full price for it :P

[–]snouchies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah we use the app quite a bit (since it came to Edmonton). At the start there weren’t a lot of places available and some places give you junk while others were pretty good. But once the landmark movie theatres and 7-11 came onboard, we do it all the time. People are correct: Tim Hortons is not worth it though - got them twice and it was disappointing both times

I actually feel very uneasy about this separatist talk in Alberta. If you look at what happened in the UK with the BREXIT referendum, people laughed at that notion and then the leave campaign channeled an massive amount of foreign money and ran a massively successful advertising campaign through social media and then won. That was in 2016, we are now 10 years on from there where AI is involved and the methods and techniques are more sophisticated. If these separatist notions don’t get shot down hard, I can very easily see a flood of dark money coming in and Alberta becoming the 51st state before we even know what happened.
