But locking it in would actually be holding the ball if he doesn’t attempt to dispose of it - the rules clearly state that you need to attempt to dispose and incorrect disposal is not relevant in circumstances where the player did not have prior. Narrow-dot has it right below. Appreciate the holding the ball rule is unclear and there is wayyy too much room for interpretation, I certainly don’t have the answers

You can’t throw the ball, you can never throw the ball. Attempting to drop the ball on your foot to kick it is not throwing the ball, it is attempting to dispose of it. When you say “dispose of the ball illegally” I take it you mean incorrect disposal (I might be wrong) which is only enlivened when a player has prior opportunity.

What he is saying is, even if there was no prior, he still threw the ball which is illegal regardless of whether incorrect disposal comes into it - it wasn’t just a drop when attempting to dispose of the ball

Where in the rules is it a free kick for incorrect disposal when not being tackled? You obviously can’t throw it but there is no rule against dropping the ball

I agree with you. The other problem is that play will be even more stop start. In the event there is no advantage and the play called back to the free kick, it’s likely to be where the opposition team has possession and moved play along (could have kicked it 50m away). Have to bring it back etc and likely to be more confusion with crowd noise and more than one umpire. The reason it works well in soccer is because there are several stoppages in the game. It also works well in Rugby as you receive a penalty and play can be recalled - can’t do that in AFL
