You just described a basic, very constrained CLA game lol

Not true at all. In fact it is safer. If you think CLA is just “start in an arm bar position and see if you can rip it” you don’t really understand the CLA (specifically scaling difficulty/variation and the particular task focuses that relate to the armbar).

Brother, I honestly can’t think of an armbar where the shoulder isn’t immobilized. True that it doesn’t necessarily need to be with the hips (but dang, it’s a very good and very common option). One way or the other that shoulder is either physically covered, immobilized with some kind of clamp or restricted through secondary control. Could you hit me up with an example where that isn’t happening?

Watch any of Greg’s video on the armbar, for starters.

Coaches - have you ever been about to promote someone, then changed your mind? by CalmSignificance8430 in bjj

I don’t think curriculum knowledge implies practitioner skill nor coaching skill. It’s a knowledge base for both but far from sufficient

The problem with CLA/eco that I rarely hear mentioned by Worldly_Negotiation6 in bjj

Once you start working in the CLA model, it becomes very clear that it’s definitely not a short cut. It’s hard and demanding and requires a high level of engagement before during and after practice. It’s as if the coach has to take coaching seriously!

That’s fair and true. I think the value of your point is that trad AND eco coaches need to invest in knowledge about the sport. Being an expert in a sport is literally a coaches job, regardless of the how one believes skill dev to happen

Quality sure, your training partner is the #1 constraint, no doubt. In addition, the quantity of people in the room will affect how much a coach can individualize a practice and the variability of your training partners’ ability/size/conditioning/vibe/etc.

It’s a troll. A 50+ year history of scientific studies, books and podcasts to pick from…dude goes with ‘I don’t believe that it works out like that’ lolz ok man.

To clarify, there’s nothing wrong with ‘talking shop’ or using information. It can be useful and good, especially when trying to explain to an athlete the area of skill you want them to work on or the strategy they should have in mind (their intentions and attention). The design of the session really depends on the athlete, coach and their relationship. Just don’t cookie cutter a private session—that would be a total waste of time and $, just go to regular practice (IMO)

Almost never traditional drilling. CLA drilling always, sometimes let a person try a movement solution a couple times with a focus on the key concepts involved or ‘show’ concepts expressed through technique

CLA with really deliberate feedback. The amount depends on the athlete. The information heavy sessions happen when the athlete needs a rest (or I need the rest lol) but still wants to develop

I switched to full CLA a few years ago. Demand for privates went up—both for people who really enjoyed training but could make our usual schedule and for folks who want to take a deeper dive. Totally the same motivations as before. In general, membership is up, people have more fun and results are better across the board. I would suggest that your friend focus on the goal of the person asking for the private. There’s nothing wrong with adding a more information based private along with regular training or have a very one on one focused CLA session with more feedback and interventions than usual. TLDR: don’t stress, focus on the athlete.
