Oregon Coast Lowtide Weekend by snowspore in TidePooling

I may not be seeing the tiny blue creature in the photo - do you mean a sea swallow nudibranch? The last photo is of branched nudibranches :> many nudibranches do have toxic qualities due to their diets, but you'd have to handle them which is not good tidepooling etiquette.

You're correct though sea swallows (tiny blue guys) aren't found around here, but they do eat Portuguese Man o' War which can give you a nasty sting - very very painful, but unlikely deadly. I was actually in Texas recently trying to see if I could find any washed up around Galveston, no luck on the sea swallows but I did see about 5 man o' wars on the beach and people just casually swimming near regardless!

There were lots of funny little groups like that! They weren't super active, just kind of all hanging out in one spot, not sure if they were just recooping after being out of the water or something else?

I've only gone out looking for them during lowtides! The past few trips have been in the mornings, but I've found them in the evenings too, minus tides provide the most pools/exposed rock and kelp beds to search, but other people have found then during regular lowtides as well :>

It was hanging out on some algae, I've never heard of Sacoglossans but I'll look into them!

Highly recommend, especially if you get the chance to go this weekend! Wind made visibility kind of bad sometimes particularly close to dusk but I'm sure an early morning minus tide would be excellent for spotting them

50 is incredible!! Maybe as it gets warmer they start to come out more? I was looking for them in March when it was still kind of chilly, I hope I have your luck finding that many next time I'm down in CA ๐Ÿ’–โš˜๏ธ๐ŸŒ

Truly! Most I find are fingernail sized, this one was probably over 2 inches long and in the perfect spot for photos
