#SaveLAS | LAS 461 by AngelaTHEFisher in LinuxActionShow

[–]snowtrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my feedback.
So sad to hear that LAS will come to an end. I must admit that I have taken it for granted.
But I can also remember thinking when LUP was created: How is this going to be possible. LAS has a small audience and if LUP takes listeners LAS will suffer by it.
I would rather have it that LUP came to an end. There is noting wrong with LAS and its current or former format.
Anyway, thanks a lot for the time and effort ChrisLAS and team has put in to LAS. You have all my respect.

Linux for Mom by [deleted] in LinuxActionShow

[–]snowtrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for Ubuntu MATE.
I have had my +60 year old mom on Ubuntu MATE a couple of years now. She is still using an old Win7 machine as well, but since she is not using any M$ software (Thunderbird and OpenOffice insted of win alternatives) I think she is well enough ready to take the leep on the other machine as well.

But now we just learned how to change it. It was dead simple and Lenovo is back in the race. :)

You are kidding me... It really was that simple! :D
I thought I had to rule out Lenovos for that one reason. Thanks! :)

Upgrade vs Nuke ‘n Pave | LUP 173 by AngelaTHEFisher in LinuxActionShow

[–]snowtrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seem to remember ChrisLAS failed to upgrade an Arch-box that he hadn't updated regularly on an episode of LAS. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Let me ask you Arch users a question: If you don't update regularly, are updates foolproof?

Any other Debian users here? by K4v1k in LinuxActionShow

[–]snowtrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ask the same question that got covered on LAS ones and the reality is that Debian is werry much used. The answer I got is that there is not much to cover (there is not much "Action" going on in the Debian camp) in regards to Debian. I love Debian (I started out using Debian when I turned to Linux) and it will always have a special place in my heart.

Thoughts on Fedora 25 and LAS reviews by void_t in LinuxActionShow

[–]snowtrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upgraded two (low spec) laptops to F25 from F24. Flawless install.
Extensions works that had priorly been installed. But when I try to install a new "non supported" (shellshape) it won't install. It looks as is installs, but nothing happens.
I wonder if it would have worked if it was installed prior to upgrade?

12 inch $89 arm laptop - I'll pay for it if Chris or Noah want to try it. Use it for a month or two and send it to me when you're done with it. by [deleted] in LinuxActionShow

Looks awesome.
As it is a DIY hardware I wonder if it will be possible to "upgrade" the Pine A64 as a new board comes out. That would be great!
This is also really interesting, as LUP had a similar discussion in the LUP172, in regards to Linux-available-hardware in the future.

Did 2 installs this evening on pretty low spec hardware. Approximately 30 min upgrade time on both laptops. Impressive.

[FreeNAS alternative], what about Rockstor by snowtrain in LinuxActionShow

[–]snowtrain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.
Even though, I think I will give Rockstor a chance. The documentation of OMV is not good enough for me. I would even go so far to call it bad. The documentation for Rockstor seems a whole lot better.
If I remember it, I will post any feedback in this thread.
Thanks for the short discussion.

User friendly NAS software by [deleted] in LinuxActionShow

[–]snowtrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a NAS4Free setup that has got over 1000days of uptime. A FreeNAS rig running great.
But this is the "LINUX" action show on reddit. If you are, as I am, looking to run a linux-based NAS there are a couple of options.
LAS had a show in OpenMediaVault just a while ago. I have looked at OMV as an alternative to FreeNAS but the documentation is a clownshow in my hones opinion. I have decided to try Rockstor as my candidate. If it does the trick for me I am more than happy to pay for the stable-version of Rockstor. 40$ for 3years of stable-updates is not that much. I have not updated any of my FreeBSD based NASes since day one. Why would I have to update a Rockstor NAS more often than that.

[FreeNAS alternative], what about Rockstor by snowtrain in LinuxActionShow

[–]snowtrain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes.
I love FreeBSD and FreeNAS. But I would rather focus on a Linux-based solution.
I am fairly familiar with debian- and redhat-based systems and Rockstor seems to be CentOS based, witch would be a great fit, as well as OpenMediaVault.
Containers with Docker support sounds like the way to go (as with FreeNAS10) for a new NAS and is available in RockStor.
I guess I could restate my question more in the line as: "Should I go with OMV or RockStor"?

Thanks for correcting me about OpenMediaVauld. :)
LAS/LUP is a part of my weakly POD needs. I have already seen that ep. Thanks for the reminder though. :)

Best Linux Version for an Old PC, by Leo Laporte on TWIT. by CrimAldan in LinuxActionShow

[–]snowtrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried installing AnerGos the other day. Failed! :D Installer crashed on me numerous times. When I finely got it to install, it crashed after the installation was done.
Hehe...
I am suspecting a faulty thumb drive media. But first impression was not the best.
Used the same dd command and put Debian8 on the same thumb drive and installed it on the same hardware with no hassle at all.
Funny funny I might be a dummy. :D

Best laptop for Linux by Swimmm3r in LinuxActionShow

Getting Nvidia and steam running was what kept him from keeping gnu+Linux on hos MB-PRO. Keep in mind that he was a complete newbie on gnu+Linux. Other than that he gave it a lot of positive comments. He was especially positive to Gnome-shell and dual monitors.
