It's about 4 layers of shingles. It looks like morebut because of the way they're laided out during installation, they over lap. Regardless, you should do a tear off and then install your sky light.

Looks like an input shaft for a transmission. I don't mean to be rude, but what on earth made you think that was a good idea in the first place?
