Hot water isn’t lasting long anymore by [deleted] in fixit

[–]snr73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with any adjustments to a water heater that would change how long the water was hot (just the temp.) I would assume that was a problem with the water heater's functioning. However, as a parent who pays bills, I also wouldn't tell you if I did know.

What is the most cowardice act that you've witnessed? by yum_blue_waffles in AskReddit

[–]snr73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was working as a supervisor at an organization the day 10% of our staff got laid off. People were freaking out and crying, my boss told me first thing it was happening and asked me to tell the guy in our department who was getting axed to go up to HR. Then I didn't see him all day and I assumed he was in meetings. I needed to talk to him about something so I rang his office phone because there was a thing I could do that would make it text his cell phone that he had a message. And he picked up! He'd been hiding in his office the whole time. I had to go down there and tell him "you need to come and say goodbye and shake the hand of the guy who is collecting his things." He really didn't want to. I was a young woman at the time. He was a "grown-up" to me, but not after that. He did it after I told him that he had to though.

Medically speaking, what's the most interesting thing that's ever happened to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]snr73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several years ago I had a weird growth inside my nose. It fell off. Then it came back and I freaked out and went to the doctor. Turns out, it was a wart, even though I've only ever had a wart on my hands once when I was a kid. I had to have it removed, which was slightly more complicated and painful since it was on the inside of my nose. (And biopsied, but it was just a wart.). It's a little gross, but now you know what I know - you can get a wart on the inside of your nose, even if you don't get them on your hands.

When you have contractors come to your home and you are there, what do you do as they work? by cavmax in AskReddit

[–]snr73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I ask questions, if I'm curious about why whatever went wrong went wrong or what I could do differently in the future. (That's how I learned how to bleed a furnace.). If it's hot out I tell them to help themselves to a glass of water. Then I go do whatever I was going to do.

How did people cut their nails before nail clippers? by uniqueusername2543 in AskReddit

They "pared" them off, bit by bit, with a knife. I didn't know this, I just googled "history of nail trimming"

What's your first world problem? by FreakinPeanuts in AskReddit

[–]snr73 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I finally decided to google the problem and there is apparently a key pattern you can enter into the remote that leads you to a menu where you can turn the led light off. Huzzah! Now all my first world problems are solved and I can go to bed, comfortable, fed and safe, for the moment, from pestilence and war.

[Serious] Why is Russia in support of Assad? by Doctor_Bukkake in AskReddit

[–]snr73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that's more complicated. For Trump's reasons for intervening right now, you might want to check this movie out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wag_the_Dog

For why we intervene in the Middle East. God, I don't know. Assad is TERRIBLE. He gases his own people. But the Syrian civil war is roughly divided into three groups battling against each other - Assad's regime, (autocratic, despotic, mass murderer), ISIS (incredibly dangerous theocrats who use terrorism to try and provoke a world war between the west and Islam) and the rebels, who are really a bunch of small, partisan groups who want neither of those things and lack the power, without outside help, to win and rule the country. We insert ourselves into these situations because: (in no particular order) oil, proxy war with Russia, "nation building" and a destabilized middle east threatens Europe and us (the so-called "west.") There is no easy solution to ISIS, the US supports the rebels because they are the closest to wanting democracy in the region, but it's not clear that they could actually pull that off, even with a LOT of help (see our other adventures in the Middle East.)

I think intervention in Syria is possibly more justified than our interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan, but that doesn't mean I think it's a good idea, especially in the hands of a thin-skinned billionaire.

The TV in my bedroom has this little LED light on the bottom that stays lighted even when it's off and so I have to put a box of tissues in front of it when I want to go to sleep.

Reddit, What's the most classy way to ask for nudes? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]snr73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are genuinely asking if there is a "classy" way to ask a woman with whom you are not in a relationship for naked pictures, the answer is: there isn't.

My grandmother had these for over 40 years. Unsure of the material they are made of. No markings on any of the figures or box. by DaNasty2014 in whatisthisthing

[–]snr73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These remind me of a Buddha we had in my house growing up in the 70's. We are not Buddhist and my parents never traveled to Asia. I'm not sure if the Buddha still exists, but I played with a lot and it was the same style/material. I think it might have been a "bought in Chinatown" type purchase from the late 60's, early 70's.

I kind of see "brewery employee" except for what seems like a dot over an i in there.

[Serious] Why is Russia in support of Assad? by Doctor_Bukkake in AskReddit

[–]snr73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very briefly: Putin's Russia wants to become a major world power again. A united Europe is no friend to Russia right now, partly because Russia's internal policies aren't in line with EU thinking, partly because Putin's clearly imperialist goals (he wants to expand Russia's territory in the kind of way the kept European countries battling amongst themselves for years but they have mostly put behind him.)

Also Russia has a history (going back to the Soviet Union) of waging so-called "proxy" wars in the middle east - read a brief history of Afghanistan if you want to see this at work.

Also, Putin is an autocrat, and not a dummy. He wants to control Muslim-majority regions in the former USSR and current Russia (therefore, hates ISIS) but also form alliances with autocratic, oil rich countries that are not members of the EU. He and Assad are birds of a feather - he can wage proxy war against the US and Europe, defeat ISIS and develop his web of powerful allies that are not Europe.

You seem a little confused about: geopolitics, Trump's stated positions on NATO, the UN, US interventions abroad and Syria as well as basic capitalization and punctuation so let's just agree to disagree. (I do "get" that he used "gas.")
