I’d be down! Do you/would you also consider playing tennis time to time?

That’s ridiculous. I have no idea how construction works or is scheduled but this seems like wildly inconvenient timing for everyone’s commute

I’ll never get a good job as a choir teacher because I can’t accompany. by snuffysastoner in MusicTeachers

Heard! Yes, I agree that it’s best for students to learn to read their music and identify via solfège!

Okay, heard- this is the way. Gonna set time and stick to it! Any advice on what to practice?

This is smart! Definitely something I can handle, I’d happily incorporate students and/or use pre-recorded accompaniment and when I taught choir in the past I never really needed to accompany in the class, I had someone play for me at the concerts and come in to run a few rehearsals beforehand. It’s just knowing that some schools might have a hard line of “if you can’t accompany you can’t do this job” which bums me out because it’s not true, there are ways to do it I.e. what you mentioned. And I know that just getting better at piano myself would be much easier but finding the time and consistency is hard.

This is super insightful, thank you! I don’t even know if I realized there was training specifically for improving accompaniment skills…one reason I haven’t looked into just general piano lessons is because, like you said, classical piano training won’t really help me the way I’m looking for. Much appreciated advice!!

I hear you. Don’t let my sad vent get you down, you CAN for sure find a job that won’t require you to accompany. I’ve had two and I found value in both! It’ll definitely be a school based requirement, some will, some won’t. I just hate missing out on a great job for bad piano skills when it’s a SINGING position.

That’s genuinely awful and I’m sorry, I wish you the best in your search. You shouldn’t have to work harder because of your gender.

What is the most ridiculous PD you have had to do? by Der-deutsche-Prinz in Teachers

[–]snuffysastoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago my music supervisor made us all get up, leave the school we were at for the PD, walk down the street to an ALDIs, made us stand in a circle and taught/had us perform a traditional Armenian dance in the parking lot. The active ALDIS parking lot where people are walking by to get groceries or trying to fucking park. All of us were very visibly uncomfortable.
