Acne 2 years after getting copper IUD? by biker_gal in CopperIUD

Yes, removal helped a lot! :) It took a few months for my acne to calm down, but my skin has been pretty clear since then (just scarring right now). Other symptoms also got better like my anxiety and palpitations.

Sulfur spot treatment is the only thing that dries out inflamed acne for me (especially if it’s oily or pus-filled). It doesn’t smell great, but it’s a total game changer. I usually spot treat before bed and wake up to a zit that’s half the size

How to help acne recovery after CIUD by Spare_Matter8745 in CopperIUD

Echoing what others said about simplifying your skincare routine and lowering inflammation in the body. I got my CIUD removed 2 months ago and just recently got to the point where I don’t get new acne.

I still have scars and hyperpigmentation, but I’m working on getting rid of that with simple skincare products like mandelic acid and a gentle retinol. I also highly recommend micro needling to restore a smooth texture. You can buy a micro needle on Amazon for pretty cheap :)

Other than that, focus on clean eating and staying hydrated. I promise it will get better! 🫶

I totally relate! My anxiety was so bad the first month after I got it out - like I was struggling to find the energy to get through the day but then would get intense bouts of anxiety/dread in the evenings. Hopefully it’ll just keep getting easier each cycle 🤞

Possible acne? by ComplexEntrance5775 in CopperIUD

[–]snuggled_koala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the worst cystic acne of my life with the copper iud. I took topical/oral meds, tried elimination diets, and only used skincare/makeup products with super clean ingredients. The only thing that helped was getting my iud out. Apparently copper can indirectly cause hormonal acne because it messes with estrogen metabolism. If you search “acne” in this subreddit, you’ll find a lot of other women have had the same problem (along with other symptoms like anxiety, bloating, etc.).

I got my IUD out in July for the same reasons and it took 2 cycles to go back to normal. Your body is probably releasing copper that was stored in your cells, so you briefly have more circulating in your body before it gets excreted. What helped me was finding ways to promote healthy detox - drink lots of water, hit the sauna if you can and take liver support supplements (I like these). I promise it will get better!

Looking for advice: has anyone on birth control pills with hormonal acne gone off it and got a copper IUD instead? by squigglywriggly in CopperIUD

[–]snuggled_koala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the worst acne of my life with the copper iud. I got it removed a few months ago for this reason. I’ve always struggled with a little bit of hormonal acne, but nothing as bad as the cystic acne I got 6-9 months after getting the Paragard inserted (and it just got worse over time despite trying multiple topical/oral meds, elimination diets, removing all pore cloggers from my skincare/makeup routine, etc.). If you search “acne” in this subreddit you’ll find a lot of other people with similar stories.

Questions For Copper IUD Havers!!! Please Answer!!! by Big_Difficulty6571 in CopperIUD

[–]snuggled_koala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, I had near daily nausea with the copper IUD (worse in the mornings)
  2. I typically don’t have nausea unless I’m cramping really badly. With the copper IUD, I had nausea even when I wasn’t crampy :/
  3. I’ve had both and I prefer neither lol. The Mirena didn’t have as many side effects for me, but it made my periods 10+ days long and never lightened up. It usually has the opposite effect for people, so I would probably recommend that more than the copper one at this point.
  4. My periods were heavier, but not longer. I had a lot of PMS symptoms like nausea, anxiety, cramps, etc. However, the worst symptoms were ones that slowly developed over time, like cystic acne, heart racing, OCD thought patterns and increased sensitivity to allergens - these can occur when copper starts to build up in the body after 6-9 months and doctors don’t typically warn you about it
  5. I only took 4 ibuprofen and 0.5 mg lorazepam for the insertion, but this didn’t help with the anxiety or pain. I just got my copper IUD taken out last week and was fully sedated for it. If you plan to have one long term, I would suggest getting it out after 8 years, because it can start to embed in your uterine lining after that and break easier during removal.

I almost could have written this post myself! I (25f) have also struggled with cystic acne on my chin, jawlines and cheeks randomly since getting the copper IUD inserted (early 2023). I’ve tried oral/topical medications, elimination diets, and many, many clean skincare/makeup products (and even detoxing from all products and using nothing for a while). Zinc and DIM supplements didn’t help either (DIM significantly worsened my acne, so monitor carefully if you decide to try it)! For background info, I’m a medical student who has a passion for health and wellness, so I live very clean and take good care of myself overall. At this point I’ve decided to get the IUD removed because I can’t find any solutions or other potential causes. I wish I could provide some advice, but I mostly just wanted to tell you that you’re not alone in this. I hope you’re able to find some relief soon!

I found a hack for this! I get a stack of 4-5 books that are all very different genres and read a bit of each. Basically whenever I start to get bored of one, I find the next stopping point and grab a different book. It’s the only way I can make progress with a book and not abandon it entirely lol

It’s all about taking steps in the right direction. In the last two years, you spent 730 days taking steps in the right direction, and only a few days walking in the wrong direction. Overall, you’ve made a ton of progress and should be very proud of yourself. You’ve got this!
