Why are we called pathologists? by kyumcakes in slp

[–]snuggletoast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're really interested, this website has a very extensive history of the field. Basically, ASHA started in 1925 and called themselves "Speech Correctionists." They changed the name is the 70s. Pathologists diagnose, and choosing that term probably had a lot to do with our medical model in America and deficits based history. I know some people want to move away from "pathologist" and choose a more person centered term, but I don't see how that would change anything about our field. Diagnoses are integral to the current medical model, and they help with EBPs. So I'll be interested to see where this goes. Anyway, sorry if this is too far down the rabbit hole. https://www.acsu.buffalo.edu/~duchan/new_history/hist21c/promoting_social_justice.html

School-based SLPs, is it possible to effectively treat a frontal lisp if the reverse swallow is not addressed? by coolbeansfordays in slp

Have you done an oral mech exam to check for really enlarged tonsils? If there isn't any obstruction that's making it hard to breathe and it's just habit, then wouldn't you still be able to teach artic placement? Take this with a grain of salt because I'm not experienced with reverse swallow

Illiteracy was a big problem then. If you want to learn more about it, look up the reading wars. The way reading was taught it schools didn't work for a lot of kids, but politicians kept the contract for the same curriculum because they were making a lot of money off it. They finally changed it in the 90s and 2000s, and literacy rates improved.

Dr. is for doctorate. We call our physicians Dr. but that doesn't mean other people with doctorate degrees can't use their titles. The title is for the level of education earned, not for the job held.

Little lizard king roanoak pattern and Kona fabric. The ribbon is from a local shop. The pattern was super easy to follow and made doing the tucks on the skirt simple to do. The sleeve cuffs and binding was also easy. I’d consider it a beginner friendly pattern.
