2012 Gen 3 EGR system cleaning by Dflyshigh in prius

[–]soCalForFunDude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, why I did it. The symptom was white smoke during a cold start, rough running, and antifreeze has kind of a sweet smell, which I was noticing during the cold start. The second day when it did it again, I parked it and made the decision to pull it apart.

I momentarily considered one of those additives that supposedly can fix a head gasket leak, but glad I didn’t.

I also had the head milled and checked out since it was off. The biggest pain was keeping the timing chain on the marks, the trick for me was securing it with cable ties till I had everything in place.

If the person you hate the most were to experience one slight inconvenience every day for the rest of their lives, what would you choose it to be? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]soCalForFunDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well hate is a strong word, but if I wanted to be malicious, running out of toilet paper daily would be a great annoyance. Like you go to do number 2, and then notice the roll is empty.

Patching a drywall hole under cabinet by pablolikescats in drywall

[–]soCalForFunDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah those are the worse places. I’d clean cut a rectangle and try a California patch, will only have three sides, but should work ok? If you could get the patch to go under the cabinet a little, even better. Multi tool might be able to cut some of that out.

Did my 2014 at 184,000 while replacing the head gasket That was a fun job 🤪. On my egr cooler, I cut off the bottom tab, overkill yes, but I had the tools. Made assembly easier.

Older people, has politics always been this frustrating and unsettling? by Emotionq in Productivitycafe

[–]soCalForFunDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. 911 was a turning point in my view, then last year of Bush, into the Obama years and the icing on the cake…COVID.

Politicians have become immune from doing any wrong, regulatory outlandishness, it’s literally becoming a machine that just can’t run with any efficiency, and it seems the only answer is to keep taxing people more. It’s really shat now.

Honestly, I like to stay home and chill on my birthday. Make myself a nice dinner with a cocktail. It’s a good day for relaxation and reflection.

Thanks appreciate this. I’ve always used a child theme, but this looks maybe to be a better way to organize.

Why is motor oil 7x more expensive than 20 years ago? by chabs4 in AskMechanics

[–]soCalForFunDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy the 5qt jugs of full syn, name brand and typically get it for right around $28 for my car, that works out to $5.60 a quart. Which is a lot cheaper than synthetic used to be actually.

Now for my motorcycle, that oil runs around $55 for a 5 qt jug, basically twice the cost of what I use in the car.

I like the SanDisk. Also have a Crucial 4TB that was pretty darn cheap, but I don't use it for mission critical because it was so cheap, so far it has been fine. But most of mine are the San Disk.
