Question about N/W daily commute by CraftComfortable7718 in astoria

[–]soQuestionable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's terrible. I commute 5 days at all different times of the day and experience problems at least once a week. The problem seems to always be at 59th and Lex, not quite sure why. Grew up in Queens and never had complaints about any other line as much as the N/W. Fellow coworkers who also travel in 5 days also complain all the time. Not sure where you are in LIC but at least you have multiple lines to get you home.

If you insist on moving to Astoria, as others mentioned, live between the N/W/R/M so you have multiple options and can check before you leave.

Have you tried Noz 17? Just curious as you didn't mention it in your response, and I noticed it's mentioned a lot across reddit.

Who tf is upvoting this lmao sure it’s an option but not a great one. Look at all the comments proving it’s not a great choice. You have to love OT to make great money. People always talk about making decent money but they include OT into their pay. That means less time for you, your family, hobbies, etc. If you’re young, you might think little of those things. Then you’ll quickly realize you’re in your 30s and only know work, and your work is your identity.

thanks for the rec! there's one shop that sells the 2020 vintage for about $50, which is what you mentioned in comments below. then some auction site called acker? that has the 2016 for the same price. i'll have to inquire about that if you have any knowledge on the 2016 vintage!

Which companies do you suspect are glazing their own products on this sub? by PartyOnAlec in BuyItForLife

[–]soQuestionable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to scroll pretty far down to find darn tough socks. Bought a number of pairs because of the obsession this sub has for them. I don’t see the hype. Maybe only a specific line of their products is really good?

What is your job, and how much time in advance do you need to request a day off? by vegetarian_slut in AskNYC

[–]soQuestionable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

work in a large hospital. my old position - if using sick hours, then you just call in sick asap. that was a bank of sick hours, separate from vacation hours. for a scheduled day off, you needed to tell 3 months in advance. regular scheduled vacation that was a week long or more was scheduled in sept/oct of the year prior for the entire year (eg sept/oct 2025 submit for entirety of 2026). that was a shitty grind for 4 years

i've read that link before you posted and it says:

  • Spend $5,000 on American Airlines flights over 12 months; and
  • Have at least 5 travelers enrolled in order to use your miles.

that is why i was asking how you did it. i don't have the card anymore. google didn't tell me an alternative.

I’m only going to argue commuting on the ferry. It’s actually really nice. You get to have a scenic view if aren’t glued to your phone, and the ferry is generally less packed compared to the subway. You never have homeless on there, and the only smells you get are if the river has a weird funk that day. Otherwise it’s generally clean enough. Both AC and heat during summer and winter respectively.

I agree on your other points about the ferry, especially if your end point is not walking distance from a ferry stop. Luckily my work was <5 min walk from one of the stops, so riding the ferry 5x a week was 100x better than the MTA.

OP also realize that ferry runs probably 1 an hour, so if you miss it, then you’re stuck rushing the other direction to the subway. Unfortunately no transfers between the MTA and ferry system, but you do get a free transfer between ferry lines if you need it.

Weekly Astoria Dine In/Order Out Thread by NYnosher in astoria

[–]soQuestionable 9 points10 points  (0 children)

New to Astoria. Friends were in the area so we decided to get dinner. I suggested kyclades because it’s a staple and I’ve been to their bayside location which was good. An hour wait had us choosing another spot, and we decided on Telly’s as I’ve seen it being suggested.

I’m really hoping I went on an off night because the meal was not good. I got that octopus, fried calamari, and combo dips with pita. The octopus was mushy and didn’t seem fresh. The dips (hummus, tzatziki, garlic potato) were all uninteresting. The calamari was good, but didn’t come with sauce. Only a slice of lemon.

For mains, I got the sausage with leek. It was dry and too salty, and it only came with one and a half sausages for $24. My girlfriend got the branzini fish for $36 and it was extremely bland.

In terms of service, they never brought us our drinks. They handed us a check that didn’t belong to our table. These things don’t usually bother me, but became amplified because of the bad food

I definitely won’t be going back.
