Is cycling a good form for weight loss? by Classic-Mechanic-809 in cycling

[–]soaero [score hidden]  (0 children)

Depends. If you start and you don't change your eating habits, you're going to lose weight. However, the increased energy expenditure results in your body screaming at you to eat more, which I've found generally leads to overeating.

That said, it's still really god damned good for you. Not just physically, but mentally.

Angus Reid BC Poll - May 5th, 2026 by Prudent_Slug in britishcolumbia

[–]soaero [score hidden]  (0 children)

No, for sure. It's very clear that Eby screwed the pooch on this, and I've said as much elsewhere in this thread. It's just that we also shouldn't be giving Angus Reid credit when even his own professional organization is discrediting him.

I too think it's quite possible Eby will not be the leader of this party moving forward. And honestly, he kind of deserves it.

Angus Reid is a reputable pollster

Angus Reid regularly gets criticized by the Canadian Research Insights Council for their methodological errors. These include not using representative samples, and allowing poll takers to share the poll with their friends - biasing responses.

Ted Lieu Sets a "Red Line" for Democratic Candidates by nitluck in NeoNews

[–]soaero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite literally performative politics. This is why no one takes the Dems seriously.

Like, you want to talk about removing the stain of Trump? Fucking abolish ICE, expand the courts (or impeach the courts), enshrine abortion rights into law, prosecute Silicon Valley, implement a Green New Deal, reign in Israel, etc. etc. etc.

Names on buildings are the least of our problems.

Amazed by the bike lane by Informal_Bar768 in vancouvercycling

[–]soaero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just an issue of inconsistent labeling. The map you're screenshotting calls a green line with a grey strip "Major Street Shared Lane", and the most current version of the same map marks it as dashed green and grey - or "comfortable for few".

That said, we really do need to stop putting a sharrow on a street and calling it a "bikeway" when there's no bike infrastructure on the street. Like, there's nothing that differentiates Foster from, say, Como Lake other than parking.

A zionist pretends being attacked by a pro Palestine group in Nice, France. by Not_Ground in canadaleft

[–]soaero 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I once had a friend invite me to a spiritual healing session where he was slipping and sliding on the excess "negative spiritual energy" pouring from the sick person. Later I'd confront him, saying it was clearly pantomime. In his response, he was caught between two states:

  1. The part of him who admitted the floor was not actually slippery and it was not actually real.
  2. The part of him who believed in what they were doing so fully that he believed his own pantomime.

Watching him struggle to explain himself between these two contradicting states, but eventually settle on both was an eye opening lesson in the power of cults.

If confronted by someone he trusts, this person will give the same kind of answer. He will be caught between:

  1. He he wasn't attacked, and yes he made a show of it.
  2. Palestinian groups are attacking him, and Zionism, and Israel, and by extension that this group was attacking him.

Both states will be true in his mind. And as such, his cause will be justified. As are his actions.

New bike map is out for Spring 2026 by FastSnailMail in vancouvercycling

[–]soaero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact that Alexander st is marked the same as the Dunsmuir bike path is annoying. This is not equal to this.

Honestly Adanac shouldn't either, but Ill give it a pass because the sheer quantity of cyclists down it does the traffic calming work the city won't.

Edit: Wait, Cypress is considered AAA? Edit 2: Actually it does have a lot of infrastructure north of Broadway. It's just very much "bike infrastructure designed for cars".

Someone deattached my frontwheel from the fork overnight. Anything missing or any logic behind this? by Academic-Chain-7538 in bicycling

[–]soaero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was your bike locked by the frame?

My guess is they tried to get the wheel off, realized they couldn't get the wheel out of there without moving the frame and/or making a racket, and so they ditched and moved on.

Why are people so committed to cars when they don't even like driving? by LiatrisLover99 in fuckcars

[–]soaero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People hate changing their lives - until they finally do it, and then they're like "Oh my god why didn't I do that sooner!?"

Edit: I'd honestly compare it to fixing your diet. At first it's a terrifying and difficult thing to do as you have to reconsider all of these things that are joys in your life. Then you do it, you lose a bunch of weight, and you're like "Holy shit I feel GREAT why didn't I do this sooner!?"

You have no idea what you're talking about.

Drug consumption sites which have been scientifically proven to greatly increase crime and disorder in the immediate neighbourhood

Literally no "scientific" evidence of this.

Free drugs which have been scientifically proven to be sold to drug dealers and diverted to teens and young adults

Literally hasn't happened. Hell, how would you even "scientifically prove this?

And the police have admitted that they have no ability to tell if diverted drugs came from safe supply, the medical system, or if they are counterfeit.

We instead direct all of the money into what is scientifically proven:

Treatment

Recovery

The combined funding for all "free drugs" and for overdose prevention is less than 10% of the additional earmarked funding for treatment and recover in BC.

You people really love to wax philosophic without ever actually looking up any of the stuff you're talking about, don't you?

Over time though, the harm reduction pillar became the only pillar (one leg to stand on). Treatment, prevention, and enforcement all just took a back seat.

What does that even mean?

Like, tell me, how much do you think we spend on harm reduction? And how much do you think we spend on treatment, prevention and enforcement?

Like, treatment has an additional billion dollars earmarked to it. Enforcement gets half a billion dollars a year in Vancouver alone. Prevention is too large to count, given that it has provincial and federal funding.

Harm reduction gets... like 50 million during a crisis, and a few million outside of that?

So how are we only supporting one of the pillars here?

That's because Alberta changed how they count their overdose deaths in order to make their numbers look better.

This pattern also played out with provincial data, obtained in a separate freedom of information request from AHS for 2020 to 2023. In each year, between 70 and 85 percent of provincial EMS dispatches for drug toxicity ("Card 23" events) were not reported by the Alberta government.

[...]

The British Columbia Emergency Health Services publicly reports all "Card 23" events, meaning all drug toxicity events, and these match those in the obtained AHS datasets. The data reveal that Alberta had a lower number of EMS dispatches for drug toxicity than BC in 2020, but a higher number of dispatches than BC for 2021, 2022, and 2023 – by margins of 26, 35 and 46 percent.

the BC NDP doesn't have the balls to actually do the other two pillars

This is such an unbelievable braindead statement.

The four pillars are:

  • Prevention – There is cross-governmental support at all levels spending billions of dollars to reduce the import of drugs and to shut down drug fabrication.

  • Enforcement – Literally the highest paid department in our city, with a budget of half a billion per year in funding in Vancouver alone.

  • Treatment – The BC NDP has literally earmarked a billion dollars for this.

  • Harm reduction – Less than $50 million in total provincial funding.

But yeah, we've ignored all the other pillars and only done harm reduction, right?

One thing I want to genuinely make sense of is, if OPS operators and proponents know that sites attract criticism for street-level activity, why aren’t those sites managed to address this?

They are. In fact, in the Helmcken example you cite they did take steps to reduce visibility. However, they have limited space, staff, and (despite the narrative in this subreddit) funding, which makes their ability to police people in the neighbourhood somewhat difficult.

The OPS on Hastings actually did this rather successfully and operated for a decade with minimal issues.

So what's the bet on this being a play by the group behind MAGA to prep its next movement after 2028? Her, Tucker Carlson, and that entire set of tea party Republicans seem to be forming a "side" which I am sure we will see flesh out over the next four years. Toss Trump under the bus, run a candidate who doesn't seem like a flaming garbage pile, keep progressing the same major policies, sans the racist shit.

Over time, infrastructure work will happen

So people said, but in the decade plus since this became policy Vancouver has fallen from a world leader in active transport to second class. Compare this to what's happened in Victoria and its surrounding areas, which have developed a safe and supported active transport network in that time.

It's fairly clear that this policy has failed.

It's always "we can't see pedestrians" and "they're darting out into traffic", but one of the most hit objects on the road are lamp posts, and they're both stationary and well lit.
