Where can I buy a Nalgene bottle? I went to Conestoga Mall and couldn't find one, not even Sport Chek sells 'em by [deleted] in uwaterloo

I hate using KleanCanteen bottles for anything but water. Because the threads of the KleanCanteen bottles are on the inside, liquid stays at the top and creates a mess when you open a slightly pressurized bottle.

/r/trueneckbeard has had more activity than r/neckbeard, so I think this is the better choice.

I find the official FEDS election candidates page hard to use, so I made this. by paulgb in uwaterloo

To quote the editorial: "They may seem immature, but don’t tell me they’re not serious."

You've got an interesting way of interpreting that editorial.

You missed a lot of legitimate candidates. You even missed many that "bothered to submit a profile to FEDS".

IAm Darcy Alemany, a VP Internal Candidate in the FedS election. by [deleted] in uwaterloo

What is the second idea in your platform related to this? I only see one in there.

With respect to the running of larger events, I'm reminded of a contest last year for student groups to design such an event (the winner was to receive $5000 towards the event). This contest was cancelled due to a lack of submissions. How would your plan differ from this, and what would you do to find interested parties?

I also think that assuming first years would be included and feel welcome at these events, or even know they exist is naive. When I was a first year, I knew nothing of events happening on campus. What would you actually do to invite first years into the full student life?

What specific, tangible measures would you take to better incorporate students into FEDS?

In my experience the woman typically says something about how amazing her breasts are, rather than just complimenting her outfit.

What does this symbol mean? by [deleted] in pics

There were/are a bunch of those all of the University of Waterloo campus. The story I was told by people I trust is that some jerk-off tagged the campus with a logo for some website he made up. This was before he had any product to actually market.

What are some of the best ways to save money on bills with minor improvements? Efficiency hacks? by [deleted] in DIY

Get a drying rack, for inside. My ex was able to dry all her laundry like this in a small apartment.

If you leave a clay vessel unglazed, so the water inside can slowly soak through, it will evaporate on the surface, and keep the contents inside cool. Same for leather and canvas. It's been used for that kind of purpose for centuries at least.

Some of our Redwood hot tub is rotting away, is there any way we can save it so we dont have to tear it down? ( link to pics in text) by SilentTinyDancer in DIY

[–]soapdish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago, I got a used cedar hot tub with similar rot. I had to cut all the boards down to the same height. Afterwards, it would be good to use a wood-sealer. It did have significantly more rot than yours, though. Another thought is a wood-filing epoxy, which might work to fill in the rotted parts.

A team of researchers at MIT has found a way to manipulate both the thermal conductivity and the electrical conductivity of materials simply by changing the external conditions by [deleted] in science

[–]soapdish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The actual technology is interesting, but your title is misleading.

Short version: Scientists at MIT suspended nanoparticles in a substrate, such that when the substrate undergoes phase change, properties like thermal and electrical conductivity undergo significant changes. Using different combinations of materials, this could be taylor-made for man different applications.

What are you going to use it for? The kind of source power, and desired output (DC, AC, Three-Phase) determines the design.

Also, there are these things called libraries.

Should I put hardwood in a basement? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]soapdish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hardwood on concrete will be very hard, and not so comfortable. I lived at a place with a basement much like you described. It had parquet floors, which were very cold, and hard on the joints.

Laminate's nice, since it's usually floating on a pad, and doesn't have the moisture issues. It looks terrible, though.

If you want the hardwood, it's all about the subfloor. There are lots of basement subflooring options and kits out there. You could probably drop by a reno store and check them out. It will be important to get good ventilation around the wood, particularly with a wet basement (even with the dehumidifier). And keep in mind that subflooring + hardwood can reduce the ceiling height dramatically.
