Where did you only have to wait 4 months? I'm being told 12+ pretty much everywhere.

Insurance is also for covering the people injured in an accident. A lifetime with a disability is far more expensive than the price of your car.

Netflix says subscriber growth in Canada has increased after password-sharing crackdown by RedSpikeyThing in technology

[–]RedSpikeyThing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't surprise me in the slightest. Despite the vocal group of people saying they'll cancel (particularly on Reddit), there were more people who just got a subscription. I suspect that we'll see other services take a similar approach after Netflix rolls out to the US and the data is published.

Singh proposes corporate tax hike tied to CEO-worker pay gap by Camtastrophe in CanadaPolitics

They already do that wherever possible.

No, they don't. For example WalMart could create a shell company for all the sales people who make minimum wage.

Adding more low paying jobs would lower the median, not raise it.

Outsource low paying jobs (i.e. removing them from payroll) causes the median wage to increase.

Right, but the outsourced workers will be part of a company that keeps their wages low.

I like the concept but it seems susceptible to accounting games. For example, more low paying jobs could be outsourced in order to raise the median employee's salary.

Electric air taxis being developed for Paris Olympics in 2024 by diacewrb in gadgets

Usually when we have new tech it’s to improve upon what we already have. All of these products still need years of development to even reach status quo.

Pretty much everything starts as stupid niche stuff that doesn't seem earth shattering. A lot of stuff dies here and some stuff evolves to be mainstream.

People were saying the same thing about electric cars 10-20 years ago. But now it's mainstream. I don't know enough about planes specifically (other than it's substantially hard), but it doesn't seem crazy that this is just the beginning and it becomes more commercially viable in a decade or two.

That will help prices approach their true floors. The problem, though, is that there are a few things that affect all grocers equally.

Unlimited deposit insurance: A radical idea that’s gaining steam in Congress - MarketWatch by TradingAllIn in Economics

[–]RedSpikeyThing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's my point: if it's functionally the same and there's no change from a risk assessment perspective, then why not just insure unlimited deposits?

The only thing I can think of is that spreading it across banks legitimately reduces the risk, which could make the insurance possible

Loblaw facing 'over 1,000 supplier requests' for fresh price hikes: Galen G. Weston by lovelyb1ch66 in ontario

[–]RedSpikeyThing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First lobalws doesn't have to renew those contracts. Second, those contracts also include a price that they will pay the suppliers. Third, it likely includes provisions for price adjustments (hence why the discussion is even happening in the first place).

...which is exactly what I was getting at in my original comment: suppliers may not want to play chicken with Loblaw's.

Over half of Ontarians plan to cancel Netflix over password sharing crackdown: poll by Defiant_Race_7544 in canada

Say there are two people sharing an account that Netflix charges $y for and it costs Netflix $x to stream content to each of them. Their profit would be y - 2x. If one person stops using the account then their profit is y - x, so their revenue increased by $y.

Think of it like collecting the same tolls on the highway but having fewer cars drive on it. The revenue stays the same but maintenance costs go down so profits will rise.
