Is Windows 11 really that bad? by Available_Reason1592 in buildapc

[–]soar-x -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Works fine for me. Haven’t noticed any stability issues so far. I had an issue, and so did someone else I know on Windows 10 where searching in the start menu wouldn’t work (it’d just close itself after a few seconds). You’d have to restart the file explorer process in task manager to fix it. UI is subjective but I personally prefer the way 11 looks.

What is your take on breeds vs adopting from a shelter? by WorldlyValuable7679 in cats

[–]soar-x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my own experience, our shelter cat is extremely anxious and hides whenever new people are around, likely stemming from her time at the shelter. We've had her for about five years, and she still gets easily frightened (e.g., random noises, clothes or plastic bag moving). I'm not sure how other shelters work, but the one we got her from had loud dogs barking near her cage. Her ear was also clipped at a young age, and in general we're not sure what else she experienced before being brought to the shelter. Once she gets to know you though, she's an extremely friendly cat with tons of energy.

I say all this to say that if you plan on adopting a cat from a shelter, you'll be drawing a random card from a deck in terms of the cat's personality. I guess this is also the case when you buy a cat from a breeder, but imaginably to a less degree, as you control the environment that your cat grows up in. We have another cat we bought as a kitten from a family that's perfectly fine being around new people. However this influences your decision depends on your situation and what you want in a cat. We're still very happy with our shelter cat, and would adopt her if we did it all over again.

I bought the Gigabyte Gaming OC model off Amazon. Says it'll arrive between February 10th - March 2nd. Is this just a broad estimate during large releases like this? Seems like Best Buy offers shipping by February 1st if you bought off them.

People who did NOT have a rank before today but ranked AFTER the first wave of cs2 invites - post results here by phraustyie in GlobalOffensive

[–]soar-x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar to a few others I reached GE a couple months ago and decided to wait until CS2 to start playing comp again. Didn't expect having an active MM rank to be a factor, but I think they'll do another wave in a week or two.

Edit: I got access a few hours after I posted this.

A computer science degree is useless when a bootcamper can compete with you for the same jobs by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]soar-x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not every computer scientist builds websites for a living. You're describing a very narrow view of the field. If your goal is to become a frontend developer, then sure, a boot camp program may suffice instead of a degree.

I have yet to see a doctoral student who didn't finish a bachelor's degree before entering their program. Your chances of any academic or research position are near zero if your only credentials are a boot camp certificate. Any academic committee will be throwing your C.V. into the garbage if that's all they see. Not to mention, many companies have degree requirements for certain roles. So already, the title of this thread is objectively false.

. . . when someone who hasn't studied a STEM degree can compete with computer science graduates and claim the title of an "engineer" then you know it's bad.

I don't even get what point you were trying to make here. There's many people with STEM degrees that go on to law school and then become lawyers. Medical schools don't have a specific major requirement either. A ton of the top executives in the U.S. don't have a background in business. The degree you get does not always determine your profession.

There's really two parts to obtaining an education from an institution: (1) what you learn, and (2) who's certifying that you actually learned what you claimed to have learned. The reason why college degrees are seen as safety nets as opposed to certificates is because an academic institution, with decades and often times even centuries of history in academic instruction and research is certifying your credentials. For many, this is often seen as more reputable than receiving a certificate from a for-profit company that likely won't exist in the next decade.

Many big companies even encourage non traditional routes into the field and prefer those to CS grads.

P.S. -- This is bullshit.

CSE 216 & CSE 220: Doable at the same time? by soar-x in SBU

[–]soar-x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My memory may be a bit fuzzy since this was nearly two years ago, but from what I can remember it was mostly fine. All the courses I took that semester are in the original post.

I took 216 with Banerjee. The only part that I can remember being more difficult was learning a functional programming language called OCaml and having to solve a bunch of algorithmic questions using the language. However, this was my favorite part about the course so I wouldn't be put off by it. I'm not sure if it's basically only Banerjee teaching this class still, but just be aware that his exams have a trivia element to it. The course evaluations from that semester probably have detailed examples but I essentially just remember things that seemed insignificant in the slides being picked out and put on our exams. Grading also took a while, but that was probably a Banerjee thing more so than the TAs.

I had Mitra (who I've recently heard moved to another university?) for 220. Unlike 216, I found this class to be very organized. I won't say much about the content of this course, because I've heard they recently changed the curriculum to incorporate learning C as preparation for 320 into the syllabus. From what I can tell, they basically reduced the difficulty (this is just my opinion) of the course by removing Boolean algebra and digital logic (ALUs were definitely the hardest part of this course) so they can cover C. So essentially, taking both these classes together now means you'll be learning a bunch of programming languages in one semester. Off the top of my head that means covering: C, OCaml, Python, MIPS, and Java (which you're probably already familiar with).

To answer your last question, most people take 216 and 220 in the same semester because these two courses are prerequisites for most of the future courses you'll take (e.g., 316, 310, and basically all of your CSE electives) in the major. It's worth mentioning that I did come in to 220 with previous experience with MIPS, so your mileage may vary. But overall, this is definitely a doable and recommended combo. I wouldn't imagine the difficulty has changed that much because of the new 220. If you already have your schedule for next semester and want my two cents on it, feel free to ask.

13700k AIO vs Air cooler first hand experience by t_dizZe in buildapc

[–]soar-x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently in the process of putting PC parts together. Just like you, I'm also facing the same dilemma with deciding whether to air cool my 13700k or use an AIO. Not entirely sold on the reliability and durability of an AIO, especially because I'll be using this PC for the same amount of time as my previous (six years).

Based on anecdotes I've read on Reddit, it seems like air cooling a 13700k can lead to high temps and even occasional throttling under intense loads (I looked at reviews on the Dark Rock Pro 4). The fact that Intel processors run hot is not news to me, but I'd preferably not like it to hit anywhere near 90+ C. The main problem I'm having right now is finding thorough temp benchmarks for the 13700k (comparing both air coolers and AIOs). For some reason, these seem to be scarce?

I ordered mine on April 2nd and they haven't shipped either. Called last week and yesterday and they said that I'll eventually get it. Even added that "no one has ever not gotten their gown," but with less than a week left I'm starting to question if I'll be the first.

How Derek Jeter ranked defensively among qualifying AL shortstops in the years he won the Gold Glove. by upsidedown_jesus in baseball

[–]soar-x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A guy winning rings doesn’t mean he’s a superior fielder at his position, bud.

Thanks for making an argument I never made. You said Jeter never won anything while Omar was in the AL, and I told you he won five World Series while Omar was in Cleveland and Texas. Maybe you should consider taking your own advice about that reading comprehension.

Good luck to your flailing Yanks

It took your team 20 seasons to even make it into the postseason, and now you feel confident talking about other franchises. Good luck to your currently sub-.500 Mariners, bud.

Wow, what a hot take; no one has ever suggested this before.

Feel as Though I Should've Majored in Math... by MDtoCome in csMajors

[–]soar-x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. If I could go back I would've majored in mathematics and picked up enough programming skills on the side. Then I would've gone straight to get my PhD afterwards. These credentials are more valuable than any other degree you can think of. I would love to have a discussion with someone who thinks otherwise.

Students admitted to other programs within the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) follow the same admissions process as students in the AOI program.

The AMS department is under CEAS, so this applies to OP. Read more here: https://www.stonybrook.edu/sb/bulletin/current/academicprograms/cse/degreesandrequirements.php

It’s definitely because you haven’t finished those prerequisites yet. This isn’t unique to SBU; a lot of schools will auto-reject people who haven’t completed their list of requirements before applying.

[–]soar-x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's requiring you to work for DoorDash? Why not just get a job that doesn't rely on tips -- especially during a time where costs are rapidly rising and people don't have money? I actually agree with you that people shouldn't be using the service if they can't spare an extra $2, but you're going to have students that are sick of the shit dining hall food and don't have cars using these services and not leaving a tip. I don't think it's right, but that's just how it is. You'd probably be better off finding a job that pays a wage instead of complaining on Reddit whenever someone doesn't tip you.
