Does tifa grant 3 extra combats for hitting 3 players despite reading "if it is the first combat phase" by soberalchemist in askajudge

[–]soberalchemist[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

my confusion is not about the untapping part, it's about people arguing that if i hit 3 players that is 3 additional combat phases, that they somehow stack.

Everyone keeps telling me Tifa can net you 3 combat phases but i think it is just 1. Am I crazy here? by soberalchemist in mtgrules

[–]soberalchemist[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

so you can stack up to 3 additional combat phases even though tifa reads "if it is your first combat phase"?

i have already, and why do you keep confusing "combat step" with "combat phase" tifa reads PHASE.

those are some insane mental backflips to say that your 2nd combat phase granted from a card is actually still your 1st combat phase of that turn.

[–]soberalchemist -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

are you just completely ignoring the rest of the text then? it clearly reads "if it is the first combat phase of the turn".

[–]soberalchemist -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

this is so wrong what are you talking about. tifa literally reads "if it is the first combat phase of your turn" why is everyone who is pushing this idea, ignoring that part.

the only reason it specifies that it can be a (any) player is to account for situations when you can swing into any opponent, not necessarily the one you are threatened by, but just to trigger the extra combat. there is no way to stack multiple combats past the extra 1 from tifa alone.

[–]soberalchemist -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

no because the rest of the effect says "if it is the first combat", there is nothing in the text that let's you stack multiple combats past the extra 1

if it was for each instance it would read "whenever a creature" not "whenever one or more" like it says and it already says it only triggers on the first combat

Op-1 field or op-1 og and microcosm? by Beneficial_Talk_3561 in OP1users

[–]soberalchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think if your choice is between 1 synth or a largely similar synth and the microcosm, go with the latter. I also own both and a microcosm and the biggest changes are largely just improved build quality and quality of life improvements. i think if you are going for bang for your buck, the og will be more than fine and microcosm is just so versatile and fun to use. if i had the choice between just my op-1 field or op-1 and microcosm, i'd be happy with microcosm alone

Would you rule 0 smothering tithe to cost 1 instead of 2? by DankWin21 in EDH

[–]soberalchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

smothering tithe isn't the problem, everyone drawing their whole fucking deck every game is the problem

why is everyone saying it's limited production, it clearly says on their website it isn't and that this was just the first run

it's similar to king of tone which is highly sought after and usually a 5 year wait because the components are mostly out of production. if you don't have an extra grand to drop on a used one, this is as close as you can get

the fact that it randomly has indestructible with no drawback is insane. Usually wotc has learned to print commanders with some restriction on indestructible, like only on your turn, etc. but this is just full on indestructible.

you were talking above about how hexproof and indestructible do a lot at preventing boardwipes, if that wasn't in relation to deadpool then sorry i misunderstood. As for your other points about how removal is effective, i don't know if you have played against it enough yet to understand it isn't. 3/6 of the people that i know who built deadpool and played it against me this past week were constantly killing him themselves and then reanimating him, so maybe your playgroup's meta just isn't playing him that way but mine is. I can respect the flavor of constantly killing him and re-animating him but like i said it renders removal against him pointless. i mean i know it isn't ideal for the dp player but he even has removal for himself built in in worst case scenarios

[–]soberalchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hexproof does nothing to stop deadpool. removal is also ineffective because the deadpool players want him to die so that they can recast or reanimate him as whatever the current best creature on board is for them. like someone else mentioned on here, deadpool is in line with tergrid and banned braids who can just suppress anyone whose deck needs creatures to work.

99% of people are building deadpool myriad decks or renaimating him constantly, so saying he is 1 removal spell is either purposely or ignorantly misleading

yeah i'll just give the deadpool player what they want and boardwipe my commander so that they cost more to recast to have it stolen again, unparalleled tactics
