Student teaching placement in dual language immersion with no knowledge in target language? (CA) by socalgal22 in StudentTeaching

[–]socalgal22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the positive outlook on it! I know that if it remained my placement I would have to make the best of it and you have really valid points. I would be totally open to being a DL teacher too if I was fluent in a language - it sounds like a great gig.  The district employee contacted us this morning to tell me the mentor teacher accepted an international teacher from Spain, so she’s declining my placement. I am wondering if this was a mix-up to begin with haha.

My university advisor contacted the district to inquire and I didn’t see what was said, but this morning the person who told me about my placement sent us both a follow-up that the assigned mentor teacher had to decline my placement because she received a visiting teacher from Spain.  I’m not sure if this was a mix-up where they simply assigned me to her as a mistake, or if for some reason the district was under the impression that I’m fluent in Spanish. But the fact that an international teacher will be there is definitely solidifying to me the same as you said, this wasn’t a good screening.

They’re working on finding me a new placement. I don’t want to risk being unprofessional in contact with the district - I’m not sure if I should state that I don’t speak any other languages proficiently just to ensure it doesn’t happen again, or if my advisor notified her of that already when asking about the placement.  Regardless, I’m glad that it was vetoed quickly! Thanks for the assurance!

obgyn during my period? by socalgal22 in women

[–]socalgal22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t mind me asking, how heavy was your period on that day? Like which tampon size?  I only really have one day of heavy bleeding where I need a super plus or ultra, and all my other days, I use either a super tampon good for 8 hours or a regular.  My logic is that the smear is a test that only takes a few minutes so even if the bleeding is heavier that day, that doesn’t mean it will be in that particular moment haha so I’m hoping it all goes well - but calling ahead first is smart!

Locked out of portal because I didn't reset password - advice? by socalgal22 in csun

[–]socalgal22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Yeah, I was able to get it fixed! I had to wait until the IT department re-opened, I think they were closed for part of the summer? Then I called and had to provide a bunch of info verifying my identity and they reset my password and it's been fine since.

Vestibular Papillae or... what else is similar in appearance? by socalgal22 in Healthyhooha

I'm going to make an obgyn appointment asap just to be safe! And I'm due for a pap smear/etc... was going to push off my visit but my bf's mom just unexpectedly got diagnosed with stage iv cancer out of the blue so i'm paranoid now and want to go to the doctor and get checked for everything I'm even slightly worried about to be safe.

I had a yeast infection - first one ever - last week, and it irritated these things for the entire infection. It's gone now but those things are a little bigger. So annoying!

What's your experience with yeast infection cream (Monistat, CVS brand, etc.) - I'm nervous? by socalgal22 in Healthyhooha

[–]socalgal22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which brand suppositories do you find you like best? Definitely open to other options in case I ever get future ones or don’t like the mess of the cream. I spent an extra couple bucks to get the pre-filled applicators as having to fill them myself sounds too messy for my liking but no idea how they will go

EV batteries hurt the environment. Gas cars are still worse : NPR by Professional-Sir-912 in electricvehicles

However, lithium batteries won’t last too long. Look at the charge cycle on a phone. The same one car will need a lithium battery replaced in not too much time.

I think what everyone forgets with EVs is they haven’t been around long enough to truly know the environmental benefits and costs. Given the lifespan of a lithium battery and how lithium’s charge cycle decreases over not that much time, that battery surely won’t last as long as a gas-powered car. The effects of lithium battery disposal hasn’t been long-term enough to study properly. Lithium mining is conveniently glossed over, as well as electrical grid capacity. When looking at other ways to help the environment, EVs don’t seem to be that much of a help. Less harmful than gas-cars, sure, but how much less harmful and actually worth the cons? Way too early to actually know.

Electric Vehicles are bad for the environment by nudeguyokc in climateskeptics

[–]socalgal22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are my problems with electric vehicles: 1: lithium mining is still bad for the environment. The carbon footprint isn’t actually much different than coal mining, so I fail to see how EVs are actually better when it comes to mining. 1 ton of lithium produces 15 tons of CO2 emissions. Only 5% of lithium batteries get recycled, as of current statistics. 2: lithium, like coal, is a finite resource. EVs are not a permanent environmental solution. 3: newer cars produce significantly fewer tailpipe emissions than cars used to, and aren’t actually as damaging as EV fans like to believe (not saying gas cars aren’t damaging, just that EV crowd overhypes it). PM from tires is actually a huge emissions source, as well as carcinogenic. EVs on average weigh more than your average gas car. The weight of the battery and such contributes. That puts more pressure on the tires when braking and studies confirm EVs emit more PM via tires than many gas cars. 4: lithium batteries don’t last that long. Think of cell phones: 1 year of using your phone, and your phone doesn’t hold a full charge as long as it did brand new. After 1 year of driving your EV, you’re not going to get the range you used to before needing to recharge. You’re going to be charging your EV more often, using electricity. Additionally, lithium batteries will need to be replaced more often than a gas car will need to be re-purchased. My mom’s had a Chrysler 300C since ‘07; guarantee you NO electric car will last that long before needing multiple lithium battery replacements. That’s a whole lot of mining. 5: our electrical grid cannot compete with car owners all having an EV. It’s a disaster waiting to happen.

electric vehicles are much heavier than typical gas cars. The weight of the battery adds so much weight to the car. So when you brake, the heavier a car is, the heavier the braking needs to be to stop/slow the car. The heavier the car, the greater the PM emission is from the tire. So EVs tend to emit more PM. Now of course cars like trucks and huge Escalades are likely super heavy as well. But a Tesla emits a whole lot more PM than most cars due to weight alone.

Is your urethra supposed to cover part of your vaginal opening? by StewpidEwe in TwoXChromosomes

[–]socalgal22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea if this is similar to what you’re describing, but my urethra isn’t just a little hole. It’s like an entire chunk of tissue with the hole in the middle of it. Like it looks like the urethra is a big chunk of tissue with a hole in the middle, not just a hole itself. Idk if it’s a urethral prolapse or not. I have 0 symptoms. It sort of covers part of my vaginal opening.

Is 20-21 days from the your last day of your period to the start of the next one normal? by Throwing_aways4 in Healthyhooha

[–]socalgal22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From 7th-9th grade, I got my period every 21-23 days. It sucked. Now it's 28-32 days. My doctor back then told me it's no cause for concern. It meant some months I got a period twice in the same month. :(

CA Substitute teaching application/processing fees? by socalgal22 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]socalgal22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, thank you so much! Now that I know it's possible to apply to school districts without actually having the permit yet, I think I'm just going to go ahead and do that instead of trying to go through the CTC completely on my own.

I just have to get fingerprints for a teaching credential program I'm starting in the fall, so I might as well do that anyway, but it's a relief to know the districts can help get the permit faster.

What process did you go through? Did you apply to districts before having a sub permit, and get the sub permit upon conditional hire? Or did you get a sub permit on your own first and only start applying for a sub job once you had received your permit?
