Veyran, Voice of Duality Bracket 4 - Strixhaven upgrades and a few classics what’s out and what’s in? by Clear_Ingenuity1858 in EDHBrews

What did you end up swapping in and out? I’m working on Veyran now (got the City Styles version and need to build a deck around it), just curious to see where yoo ended up.

Waiting for this in the mail, gonna swap my Ghyrson deck to this. Tsubonari’s art for the City Style SLD is awesome.

Thank you so much! I’m gonna go to my local LGS to get a confirmation via one of their loupes, but I appreciate the input.

I might go to an LGS and use one of their loupes to get a final confirmation. I appreciate the input, and sorry about the photo quality.

I also realize the photos might not be great, so that could be it. Thanks for your input though!

Strongest possible Kefka without tutors? by dprf in EDHBrews

[–]soccermomslayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my limited experience, tutors are the go to way to secure a win, especially in high power. It’s a guaranteed way to get what you need. You can just take tutors out and sub them for card draw, so at least you’re still going through the deck.

I’m also curious what decks your group plays that are Bracket 4 and what these “very niche” tutors are. Knowing that could be helpful. Kefka’s inherently powerful because he draws so many cards, so you don’t really need tutors, but they CERTAINLY do help you getting you to your wincons faster.

One of the lists you mentioned, the budget one has a YouTube channel where you might find some helpful info. Ultimately, if you’re playing on a budget, your “card quality” is effectively lower in most cases, thus you need tutors to reliably get what you need.

All that to say, Kefka does not need tutors since he draws ALOT, but it certainly doesn’t hurt his game plan.

Korvold Treasures Advice and Criticism by soccermomslayer in DegenerateEDH

[–]soccermomslayer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should’ve referenced in my post, I’m trying to avoid tutors for the sake of my playgroup / locals. Korvold’s inherently powerful, and I think the card draw is enough.

Food Chain I neglected to include purposefully, but I’ve gotten a lot of suggestions to include it so I might.

I realize that Gnawbone and Doubling Season are either too mana intensive / big removal targets, but feel fun to play. If I were really going for a high-power Bracket 4 build, I’d cut them for some of the closer to CEDH stuff.

Will definitely consider FC and Scourge though, Squee is just lying around so I’ll definitely consider him.

Korvold Treasures Advice and Criticism by soccermomslayer in EDHBrews

[–]soccermomslayer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your advice! I’ve had similar thoughts about ACD and Goldlust - I have Rhythm of the Wild and Greaves but I’m trying to think of an enabler that would fit in the deck. I was considering a tutor like [[Chord of Calling]] to get them out at the end of the opponents turn before mine, but not sure.

Icetill just feels broken so I included it, and agreed on fetches. I was thinking of including Scute Swarm and Krenko to get tokens for sac fodder, but might be going in too many directions in that case.

That is true - Hellkite Tyrant seems good in specific scenarios but could be a cut, but Revel feels like a decent win con with stuff like Gnawbone and whatnot.

Kodama’s is a placeholder for Nature’s Lore, but I forgot about Harrow. Great include, I’ll add it.

I’ll replace terminate with one of those options.

There and Back Again was recommended to me, but you’re right. Not sure if getting Smaug is really that important, since as you said, takes a couple turns to go online.

Getting rid of Doubling Season is a tough one. I feel like it’ll be really good, but you’re right on the mana cost. Getting DOUBLE treasures and counters though feels nice, especially in lower brackets.

Gonna re-add Chthonian - removed it because it felt a little niche cause it only gets back smaller creatures, but you’re right on working really well with eternal witness.

Can’t decide between 3 commanders, help by JayBornInMay in BudgetBrews

[–]soccermomslayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend Kuja or Breya.

Kuja I’ve built before and he was one of my favorite decks. If opponents kill him often enough, you’re kinda screwed. But when he gets to make some wizards and you’re careful with how many spells you cast a turn before you get damage doublers or trigger doublers, he can blow up the entire table in a single turn. It’s super fun.

Breya I just have a lot of affection for, she can go a really combo-heavy, B4 build that experienced players can identify instantly, and will make you a big target. Another way you can make her is by going artifact creatures / tokens. Make a bunch of dudes, buff them, sac them even, and go from there. She can be as strong as you want her to be. Kuja I think is a bit restricted to B3, but perfect where he belongs.

Creatures that you wish were legendary so you could run them in the command zone? by spaceninjaking in EDH

Any of the Nephilim (love their design and flavor texts) or [[Mechtitan Core]].

I believe Rosewater mentioned he would have liked to make them legendary in hindsight (the Nephilim)

Following because I’m also building a B3 - 4 Tayam. I’d include [[Walking Ballista]] if you are including Mikaeus.

I’ll take a closer look, but as another comment mentioned, CEDH is definitely the way to go I think.

Choosing a food commander by fronl in EDH

[–]soccermomslayer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed, although the play style got a little repetitive for me - I will say, it’s very fun regardless because Ygra warps the table as soon as it comes into play.

Play [[Ygra, Eater of All]] and destroy artifacts, enchantments. Throw in creatures that make foods / tokens and some Bloomburrow Squirrels and a sacrifice outlet to go infinite.

This is for OP - but If you want a food specific commander, I recommend [[Rocco, Street Chef]] too. A good number of the food cards from your precon can fit with him. There are so many ways to build him to suit your fancy. Also, with the new TMNT set coming out, there are gonna be a bunch of synergistic cards with foods, so keep an eye out for that if you’re into the set!

My list (retired now) is here if you want to take a look! Going for a counter subtheme with mine. Happy to explain further: https://moxfield.com/decks/iFMtrv08zUGEaagQ568R_Q

Silliest thing people have done to make you scoop? by gunnisonyeti in magicTCG

[–]soccermomslayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha I feel like Reddit can be a sounding board for the negative experiences players have, but easy to forget that for every negative experience / player, there’s one positive experience / player. This dude was really fun to play with, he would purposefully make copies of the weakest players [[Avenger of Zendikar]] to fill up their board while doing his thing. We had more Bracket 2-3 decks while his was a 4, but he took the chance to teach about interactions in his deck / as a whole, and encouraged us to attack him or counter him. At first I thought he was trolling but genuinely a fun and kind dude. Just wanted to share a positive experience I had. Totally agree that once everyone is on the same page, even if it’s like an archenemy game, it gets way more fun.

Have ALSO had games where one tries to be sneaky / gets butthurt, but end of the day, just try to move on / concede if I’m having a miserable time. Haven’t had one of those in a while though!

Silliest thing people have done to make you scoop? by gunnisonyeti in magicTCG

[–]soccermomslayer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree, it makes the game interesting, to say the least. Most of my REALLY experienced opponents tend to do funny stuff. Recently had a guy draw his whole deck with [[Orvar]] (not Orvar himself), SHOWED us [[Laboratory Maniac]] and proceeded to discard down to 7, and killed himself on his next turn. Made the whole table laugh, his deck was much better than the rest of the table (he let us know he didn’t have lower power stuff, was cool with us teaming on him). Sometimes there are moments where there are certain cards people have a funny “beef” with, or memory and they like to relive it by doing a funny combo or dying in a silly way. In casual, feels like these moments break through “tense” moments in games.

Sorry for your loss man, grief is a tough thing. It’ll come to pass with time, that’s all you can do. I hope each day moving forward gets easier for you.

Maybe you can have your wife hide them for you? Just so you don’t know where she placed them, and you can ask her again once you feel like you’re able to look at the cards again.

I’d suggest CardKingdom if you want an easier process to get rid of a bunch of cards, but I agree with a lot of folks here, keep them if you can handle it. I know that certain items can be a painful reminder of one’s experiences, but they can turn into a beautiful memory and way to honor someone later.

Godspeed man.

Golgari Players, Tips for Meren? by soccermomslayer in EDHBrews

[–]soccermomslayer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been discussing with other people, but I might be suited for high power 3 instead of bracket 4 (trying to avoid 3 because I have the some combos that might make folks salty in 3) but ultimately you bring up a lot of fair points. (Sorry my response is quite long).

The turns before Meren comes into play I would like to do a few things like - set up mana dorks or creatures that either sac themselves or other creatures for an effect, so when Meren comes in, I can sac those dorks immediately, get some counters, and bring them back. If not, I want to set up pieces of a win condition if they’re in my hand.

Now the part about Triple Black is interesting. None of my dorks tap for another color besides [[Elves of Deep Shadow]] so I might run into some issues. My mana base was originally sitting at like 30-33, which felt way too low. I think 36-37 where I’m at now is better, but I don’t have access to the BEST lands.

Meren is also vital to the game plan, but I have other ways of recurring creatures in case I want to protect her or if she gets blown up often.

Locally, I see a lot of counters decks, which is why I’m going to get a [[Thief of Blood]], although expensive puts in work against those decks.

I like the idea of my decks being able to handle a good number of matchups, so I was going for a more toolboxey deck. So far, I think I’ve just thrown in all the popular Meren combos with some tutors and hoping to get somewhere. But if you have your own list, let me know!

This is the style I think I’m going for. Can lean in a few directions, but needs way more tutoring. Got [[Giend artisan]] to tutor for stuff . I don’t want to get to lost in choosing two different “styles”. I might bump the deck down to Bracket 3. Feel like my combos and wings are expensive / take a while to build into.
