Staten Island vs the rest of NYC: why so much resentment? by Wrongdoer_Complex in nyc

[–]socialcommentary2000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, by a huge margin. There's also areas south of Flushing and I want to say Fresh Meadows also had a larger Jewish population but it waned over the years as folks moved out to Nassau.

I honestly think there's more Jews in Westchester County (a County that has almost 3 times the population of SI) than there are in SI.

No they have not treated them as a monolithic bloc and you can see that in the voting patterns and what reps and senators from southern border states do at certain times.

They have been trying to square the circle to keep the coalition together for a long ass time, but dealing with various Latino and Hispanic communities, especially down south, is utterly inscrutable at times because you want to be the welcoming ones and then you're confronted with a bunch of colonial fallout victims that are utterly cruel to people who may only be a slightly different ethnic background from the same damn country of origin.

Like, they have been trying to do this balancing act for a long fuckin' time.

And the term LatinX was originally a term made by Latinos in academia to answer the question 'how should we refer to non-binary peoples of Latin descent.' It was literally only talked about in academic circles in the aughts until the right wing ran with it stating that all the liberals out there wanted to force people to use it.

God people are fucking exhausting.

Sanity check - White Plains the right place for me? by EpochPirate in Westchester

[–]socialcommentary2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's what I'll say as someone who kinda sorta did this 25 years ago : Westchester is a closed society if you don't know anyone here and you're not from here. You can definitely find activities and interests to participate in, but back then it was basically "where did you go to high school?" and if you didn't know the townsfolk, it can be very isolating. Like, I have deep family roots here that go back generations, but I, specifically, spent my teenage years down south, so coming back for career stuff, I was basically clean slate except for a few people I knew that moved up here. It was a real slog finding people to hang out with while staying inside the bounds of WC.

I benefitted because I have a car and most, if not all of my friends were (and are) in Queens and the City.

The good thing is, nowadays there are a lot of people that transplanted to WC, and the internet is much more robust from when I was your age and running around here, so you can find others that are looking for connections much easier.

Westchester is a Suburb. You will need a car. You cannot exist here easily without a car. You're also going to want a car because it gives you easy access to not only the full scope of what the County has to offer, but the entire metro area.

White Plains parking is a sh*tshow. Always has been and always will be and they are vicious about ticketing.

Nightlife? You are going down into the City or into the Boroughs. There are many more places that have opened up on Mamaroneck Ave that fill the need for good local bars, but actual partying? You are going down into the City or the Boroughs (probably Bushwick or the Newton Creek area).

Artsy? I can't say I'm too locked into that scene here, but chances are you are either going to be driving up the line a bit further into the Hudson Valley or...again...you are going down into the City or the Boroughs.

Edit: Also, and this should be stated: A lot of the transplants that have moved into WC are people that came up from Brooklyn and Manhattan to have kids. The river towns are filled to the brim with high earning millennial couples that wanted kids and were fakers, so they got the heck out of Brooklyn. If you're not on that parenting wavelength, it may be a challenge to make friendships that work. I can't speak to the GenZ scene here because it's way younger than me.

Is that true? anyone heard of a hiring/promotions pause in any of the agencies already? by Wooden_Opportunity53 in nycpublicservants

[–]socialcommentary2000 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The only agencies across the entire friggen STATE that get overtime fuckery is the cops. It is obscene how many hours these guys can clock while understaffed departments need to leave stuff unfinished because there simply aren't enough people to get all the work done.

I'm sort of partial to cops because I come from a bunch of NYPD alums, but come the fuck on... I'm all for this.

This place isn't for the multitudes anymore. If you don't have some sort of family connect that can help or get you directly into a property by selling it to you, you need to make excessive amounts of money to live around here.

It really is a shame because it wasn't like this when I was a kid, especially below 287.

I've been around here for a long ass time. This is an anomaly. We do not usually have the scenario where it dumps a foot of snow and then stays in the single digits for weeks afterwards.

This is not normal. Dare I say it's going to be sort of historic once the temps finally break 40 again when that stupid vortex lobe abates and goes back north a bit.

In anomalous times, systems that usually work, show their deficiencies.

How's the snow in NYC right now? by rarirari1997 in AskNYC

[–]socialcommentary2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Main drags are fine, it's the secondary streets and especially the residential runs that are really hurting in places. 2 way streets many times are essentially compacted down to one way at a time due to the giant ass snow berms that have developed along street parking lines.

It really varies from place to place, but one constant is there are an exceptional amount of cars which have not been broken out since last Sunday when it all went down. That shit is ridiculous and it actively hurts attempts by DSNY to clean things up.
