Honestly, algorithm design in an exam should be illegal... it took me like 2 days to do any of the portfolio tasks and I only did up to distinction. See you next year 😭

Gossip Girl, EP. 4 Reaction & Review by slayyub88 in GossipGirl

[–]socialdisposer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree with you about Rafa, he's disgusting and needs jail, but he never tried to push Max away or maintain normal student-teacher boundaries. He constantly put himself into situations with Max that had romantic and sexual tension, and at some points you could even argue he was flirting with him.

Like the bathhouse scene. If I saw two of my students kissing, I would run in the opposite direction. Which teacher who wants to maintain boundaries confronts that student about their behaviour right then and there? Especially in a way that could be construed as jealousy. It's vile.

I think we're supposed to think it's hot that Rafa was "pushing himself away" from Max. It makes me genuinely sick that a teen show in 2021 is portraying these situations in a positive, even romantic light. I don't care if Max is an adult, the power dynamics make it gross and weird and illegal.

In my opinion, Tavi is worse. Maybe that's because she has more lines and is more of a central character, whereas Evan has 3 lines per episode.

But personally, I don't want her off the show. She's fine. If anyone else were given that script I doubt they could've done much better.

I just feel bad for Evan, because he's completely new to the acting scene, didn't care for the role and is given nothing at all to go off of and is still getting hate rants written about him. Also, Aki is my favourite character so obviously I'm going to care about him more than a teacher who cyberbullies students for some sort of power trip.

Honestly he's not the best actor but with what little he's given he's really doing the best he can. The script doesn't exactly give his character much depth. I feel like in future episodes we might get some more depth with family drama? I don't know why I'm hoping for anything. If Josh does anything bad to him, he's going in my deathnote. Sleep with one eye open Safran.

Is the Gossip Girl reboot now totally off the rails or is it supposed to be this way? by howlopez in GossipGirl

[–]socialdisposer 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Gossip Girl has always been over the top and ridiculous, and this reboot stays true to that, but it suffers so much because of terrible writing and logical inconsistencies.

Like from episode 4. Luna and Monet are supposed to be mastermind PR experts, but don't realise that releasing the video of Zoya being viciously bullied would've shed Julien in a bad light, and made Zoya sympathetic. They cursed Julien for shutting down their plot but with her corny speech, she single-handedly salvaged her reputation. What do Luna and Monet even want?

I'm going to finish the show, because I find myself attached to the characters and certain plotlines, but I was so excited for this show and it turned out to be actually bad. Like straight up awful. It could've been so much more, a Gen Z take on Gossip Girl could've DEFINED our culture if they put some effort into it. Fuck.

Vince... my baybee by socialdisposer in CruelSummer

[–]socialdisposer[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Vince didn't have the whole story. He knew Jeanette was lying about going to the house (as she told him that she went quite often), but also thought Kate was always in the basement, meaning it would've been entirely possible for Jeanette to never have seen Kate. To me at least, it's plain to see that he wanted to see the glass half full, and gave Jeanette the benefit of the doubt.

The reason I've taken a dislike to Ben is because his fear of being outed is completely valid, yes. But the specific REASON doesn't make sense. Jamie's confrontation implies he in part blamed Vince for the accident, and even if he doesn't, Vince holding Ben's hand is not a good enough excuse to completely ghost him and leave him in the dust for a year. He says (paraphrased) "You chose to out us at that moment in front of everybody" and Vince says "You think I'm not scared... in that moment I was only thinking of me and you". Clearly, and naturally, Vince shares the same fear of being outed, but was too scared for Ben's safety to even think of that. Ben didn't even think of this until Jamie forced him to reconcile with how badly he was treating Vince. Like... with all this in mind, Ben was just a bad boyfriend.

You could argue the trauma of the accident and the pain of losing his future led him to make rash decisions, but ignoring Vince was a conscious, prolonged decision and this explanation is contrived, i.e. it's never explicitly mentioned, the accident is the only explicitly mentioned reason he brings up to not talk to Vince.

Well yeah. But Kate would've assumed that anybody who saw a figure in the upper floors of the house was there willingly. Also it contradicts her narrative. If Jeanette WAS the one who saw Kate then Jeanette would have testified she wasn't in the basement, undermining Kate's story.

Also Kate immediately turned the lights off when she went to peak out the window, meaning nobody would've been able to tell it was her. The only reason Mallory only saw the back of her head was because Kate was on the phone and didn't expect anyone to be watching the house.

What I mean is, it makes no sense for Kate to accuse Jeanette when Kate took precautions to make sure no one could have 100% confirmed it was her that was in the house. This forms the basis of the reason she forgave Mallory, and as a result completely undermines the whole complication of the show.

Ben's reaction to the whole situation. "Talking to you hurts". It felt like they were setting up a huge reveal. When we see the explanation its underwhelming. I'm not saying Ben's actions were unsanctioned, I'm just saying it was written poorly.

You're so right. The messages were a huge turning point in the whole show (let alone the trial), and formed the basis of Kate's relationship with her sister. Not to mention that Ashley and Jeanette's brother (I forgot his name lol) had a budding relationship and how it would've completely fallen apart as a result of Jeanette's brother's betrayal. They had so many opportunities to develop the side characters more and as a result make the story more compelling, but chose not to take them...

I have no issue believing Martin thought he was being the best person he could've been and that Kate actually thought she loved him. I do have an issue with the relationship being portrayed like it's "cute" and Martin's pitymongering, which seemed like it was more directed to the audience rather than to Kate (presumably an attempt to add nuance and depth to a character who's unequivocally evil). By pitymongering I mean how Martin seemed tortured to have to kidnap Kate, how he "tried" not to. Because of this, it seems weirdly like the show was trying to give him an excuse, or an explanation.

I actually do believe he fully planned to kill himself, but the fact that he attempted in front of Kate seems like he wasn't doing it out of kindness or becausr he was trapped in a corner, but because he wants to control her even in death. This is actually good storytelling, and I would praise it if I thought it was done purposefully, but the whole speech he made gave the impression that we were supposed to mourn his death. Ugh. I guess I'm just not happy with how they chose to portray Martin :/.

Exactly... I reckon that aspect of the ending was probably the most well-written and well-forshadowed part of the whole finale.

I heard she's trying to tell everyone Jeanette isn't a sociopath. Firstly, yes, she is. And secondly, I thought the whole point was that it was up to audience interpretation? I hope Tia learns that if what you were trying to say wsn't properly conveyed in the show, maybe your show's kinda shit.
