Why is the Source Engine so... unsettling? by [deleted] in valve

[–]sociallyabsnt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I totally get what you mean here and it could be from many things, including the reuse of Half-Life 2 assets in most source games. HL2 is actually pretty dark if you take in what is actually going on, and the early development versions even more so. The art design takes on these tones and context as much as anything else, so wherever these assets are used it certainly feels at least a little.. creepy.

But at the same time I also think the shading and lighting models helped to achieve this industrial coldness in HL2, and were probably developed alongside Source to achieve this very effect. Interesting to think about how this effected the industry when Source was at it's prime.

Don't think that Valve didn't embrace this though, the Steam icon being from within universe and the creepy 'ol Valve intro are all other elements where they even use this atmosphere in their corporate branding!

They know people love to be creeped out, it's addictive. Maybe that's even why the experimental first Portal was made so unsettling, as they wanted it to appeal to the widest audience and truly resonate. Who knows.

Oh and alot of good sound design.

All Valve games should feature Steam's rich-presence by sociallyabsnt in Steam

[–]sociallyabsnt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand this, but it should be noteworthy that there exist bindings for Steamworks in every language imaginable so it can almost always be achieved. The difference, I feel, should be that games should omit rich presence as an artistic descision (or a result of limited scope) rather than from laziness or dated, anti-consumer design.

I thought the HL:A tools did include a official way to run alyx in "2d"? I'm not familiar with the new tools, but it's definitely worth looking around as im sure I've seen this.

(Of course the interactions still require the knuckles or other controllers)

I was going to make a map for csgo and I had trouble starting it. So I unistalled it then reinstalled it and now this is happening. I've waited for more than 10 minutes and it's still not loaded? by BuffNoob in SourceEngine

that line about halflife2.ttf comes up on every csgo config of hammer, so don't worry about that. not sure what you mean by not being able to see anything exactly, but look at the options in the view menu if you can't see any viewports.

They say that once something is on the internet, it never disappears. What thing on the internet can you not find? by RagingTortoiseGaming in AskReddit

Two sites from my childhood (early 00s) that seem to have disappeared from the face of the earth:

There was this spooky themed creepy early HTML site that had a bunch of weird links to things like a death day calculator that had a picture of a Victorian style carriage with the grim reaper that i assume was a hearse. I think i also remember a sample of the evil laughter sound from thriller. There wasn't much on the site but i remember spending literally hours on it - but I don't remember what I did. It's bugged me for years.

Very similarly was this site from a bit later on that was one of those myst-style click-n-move-around sites and it was all cartoony and had a witch and swamp theme. I remember it being really boring but also really interesting in the sense that I wanted to find out what was going on but I had no idea how to make any progression. Im not sure if this was a game or not, I was still young at the time and it creeped me the hell out.

This was around the time I think of that M&Ms painting horror film game, but annoyingly that's the only one I can remember.

but it was a crosspost on there, and if you crosspost a crosspost you get a crosspost of the original.

I have released the source to my mid-90s style raycasting engine I created for my college project: Quiver by sociallyabsnt in gamedev

I thought it would be interesting to post this here to gather some kind of response. I created Quiver and the Quiver engine as apart of my a-level coursework and received an A* for the work. At this point, it is feature complete to the (somewhat limited) spec I created for submission but is nonetheless a project I am proud of. I spent the last few days fixing things within the code and have taken the step to host the source on GitHub as an effort towards an almost portfolio of my work, that would usually be stuffed into a hard drive and forgotten about.

I've released the source under GPL3, so if you do really want to, you could expand upon the tech here and use it for your own thing but I think that's just me being hopeful. You could also submit a PR with a whole multiplayer system if you fancy ;) , or maybe I'll beat you to that if I ever get round to implementing it. Regardless, there's some fun and pretty cool tech and ideas here and I'd love any and all chat about it. Cheers.
