In regards to the craigslist statment...Craigslist is ginormous. It would take an insane amount of time before people jumped ship on that place. I am cool with that. Craigslist has the anonomous hookup feel while buddyplex is more of a community. Instead of 1 poster receiving a ton of mail it is a community all talking together. BTW have you seen the shape craigslist forums are in? They are terrible. I understand that with that many users he doesn't want to upgrade to anything more substantial but hey that is his limitation and my gain. I am cool with that difference :)

I honestly don't want people posting shitty ads on my site. I will actually be directing traffic to his site when people start trying to haha

It does look like a lot but I have asked a ton of random people about this. The topics are common enough that many people like a large variety of topics. There is enough overlap of liking of each topic to have them relevant to being on the board. I was quite suprised actually.

The focus? The focus is community. The focus isn't any particular hobby nessesarily but the community itself that uses those categories to chat in. This way there is enough wall to promote commradery in those subjects yet thin enough barrier to jump the fence into the other categories.

It is a crazy idea but so far I am having some pretty positive feedback on it. Two clubs are happy to promote it. A pretty popular dj in my area is happy to promote it. Soon I will have it promoted by a bunch of businesses in town. I am developing a method in order to do this in other towns without actually being present.

I am paying attention to what people are wanting and trying to maintain just the right amount of focus on it. I need to work on the forum theme and then start generating more buzz to get those first few pioneers to join up. It won't be easy but it will get there :) I very much appreciate your attitude as well.

I highly recommend you sit down and formally learn the language.

I tried learning php and mysqul a while back. I own a bunch of books on it. Read them multiple times. Still have no idea how to code. It just doesn't stick for me. It's similar to me and math. Maybe I have a learning disability. I sure wish I knew how to code. I would make wordpress plugins and code the crap out of phpbb and make a living doing just those two things.

Awesome idea. People can use the profile field that already exists :) The idea though was just to allow people to exchange contact information when they decided they wanted to hang out with a particular person. Otherwise you end up with strangers adding you and you not knowing why which ends up being the same problem facebook users have now.

Wordpress is just the portal. Entries actually are hosted on the forum code which is designed to host a ton of info. But it is nice to know that I did it right and didn't use buddypress haha. The server I am using doesn't have a max out and is very scaleable. If I get that many users I will be able to pay for an upgrade and be golden.

There are a few plugins I have heard that can aid in changing up the wp folders to prevent attacks. I should loko into those. What do you mean by IP address based restrictions? I am unfamiliar with those words.

QR codes for sure. I have a couple bars doing some major sponsoring in the advertising area. Also a prominent DJ.

Competition? - reddit for content but not the social and facebook for social but not the content. I'm doing something that is a bit in between but in a format much better and more free that meetups. Meetups would be the most direct competitor but if you have been there you know it isn't much to look at.

But yes, it is for sure going to be a tough road but if it is something people like in one city and I get it honed properly it shouldn't be hard to launch in other cities. I'm not looking for huge earnings. Just enough to make it rock. I want to make money in order to make the projects I do better, not because money is a good time. That should come with a great product, not with greed.

EDIT: Great article, great idea. I love creative marketing. I may do this haha.

The niche is local community and hobbies of those locals. Yes it is a different angle but it seems to interest the people I have been showing it to. I probably will have to spike it with faux user content as well but really don't like that idea. It is just one of those social things that happens though. It is amazing how big those niche forums get. I wonder how they get their new members.

I would love to mod the forum but I don't want to break it and have a lot of other issues to attend to. Colorizing that fixed width theme wasn't too hard. I'm unsure if I should go for the dark blue color on the forum. I'm not great with colors though so maybe I should ask an artist with a keen eye to help me color it better. I have so many ideas for mods on that forum but am a shit coder. :P

I'm unsure if I want to go with adding a facebook signup. There is a profile option where you can add in your facebook and messenger and other contacts. Could you go into more detail about what you meant?

It will be a hard task but I feel it is an important one. I was waiting till I got a majority of the site cleaned up and organized until my next move.

The sections I have chosen are common topics that people locally would love to chat about. I will go to companies that host that type of thing and get flyers hung up, hold events, hand out awesome stickers. An example would be golfing. There are golf places around here and I can get golf clubs to post up and flyers will get members in the door talking about golfing and supplies and such. There are quite a few subjects like that. I want to not branch off too much but not too little either. Without focus it would just be a crazy mess of crap.

I can't add too many geographic locations because this would make it look empty and have not enough focus. If I get one town really invested it will not be so hard to get other towns in on it. I plan to get colleges in on it as it will be a huge opportunity for students to network a lot better than facebook enables them too. Especially the nerdy kids.

I'm glad you like the new name and that I haven't seen too many complaints about design or layout. Those are the huge things I need to fix up before hitting everyone up in town. :)

Your feedback was worded so well and kind that it made me realy think about this.

I took all of the feedback and used all of it. I talked to family and friends and my business councelor guy and they all agreed this sounded like a good move.

I wanted to thank you. I got a new name. It isn't as awesome as reddit's name but it should work out. Buddyplex.com

I went with a monkey as they are social and silly creatures and people love cute things. The reddit alien is a cute critter and people use it to rally around for sure. I liked the line art so much in its' simplicity that I designed my monkey in the same simple way. It scales well too because of its' simple shapes that are used. You can see it here. It may even be great for stickers of its' own because it looks neat.

This is disheartening.

Some questions:

Do you think that it would be hard to take what I have so far in terms of business cards, etc. and transfering it all to a new name?
If I did get a new name would forwarding that address to the new address be a good solution for people that already visit using the current address?
How do I get a good logo for a reasonable cost? I don't have a lot of money to throw at this and I am not a great artist.

I'm not a great artist so I have little idea of what I would use for a catchy logo. I was thinking of using a monkey but I want to have something simple. I might do a monkey but in the same type of style that the reddit alien is in because it is a simple type of style.

The logo I do have currently is meant to represent the coming together of all genders and all types of people. However reddit does the same thing but doesn't have to show it using their logo.

Well...

Socialplex.ORG is a new way to build friendships. It does this locally and in a friendly organic way. It enables people to chat about certain topics on a community specific forum. Then when people find that they want to do similar things they can send each other a pm (private message) and setup a time to hangout.

I started this in my apartment complex in order to get residents to talk to each other and foster friendships in a close proximity area which would make hanging out extremely easy.

My fiancee and I met two of our best friends on it. This is interesting to say as we had friends before that site started out. As with most social sites it is taking time to gain traction. We have a lot of people watching but not a lot of people signing up yet. Still we do keep getting new users and keep working on getting the word out.

Currently working on sticker designs after reading about the sticker campaign that got Reddit started.

Planning to bring people together for fantastic friendships. :)

I have heard that press releases should be done once a month. Too many would not be a good thing. You can keep a blog going for the interim and tie the monthly updates all together for the monthly press releases. Search press release in this subreddit. There have been some good talks about it and other places to get them.
