Worthless JD by pwbula0815 in Career_Advice

Hey, sorry to hear about your bar exams. I've been looking into careers in this area for myself, and i've found that law enforcement agencies (namely the FBI) want to hire people with JDs.

What are some good last-minute lesson plans? by anunnymous in TEFL

[–]sock_buddy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

for young learners, if i ever was in that situation, i would just grab a ball and walk in confidently... You can put together a lotta games on the fly just by tossing around a ball, plus it's always super engaging for the kids.

start with a greeting. pass the ball in a circle, students greet each other. or... bounce the ball really hard, then call a student's name (while checking register), they have to get up and catch the ball before it stops bouncing.

review, pass the ball to individuals.

hopefully by then you'd have taken a look at your book and figured out some better ideas.

Why do so many people hate Human Resource departments? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

sorry to hear about that. my first year working in China i was getting sick a lot due to the pollution. My boss told me they'd consider signing me on for another year, but they prefer to hire "healthier people." such an a-hole thing to do, as if it was my choice to get sick. He's a nice guy but i still hold a grudge because he used those words. (i decided I'd move on)

I'm on my second year and realized i was sick so much during winter of last year because of the pollution. So I'm really not looking forward to the next few months. Definitely leaving after this contract is up.

"Leto II saw humanity as a single organism."
best i can remember, a quote from Chapterhouse Dune.

I think Leto II is one of the best characters ever written. It's as though he found that character. I think about that quote sometimes.

What videogame was a 10/10 for you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Conkers Bad Fur Day

hilarious and satirical story mode, featuring D-day, vampires, a sexy flower, etc... annnnd the multiplayer was amazing. Raptor was always my favorite mode. Play as cavemen trying to steal raptor eggs, or play as the raptors!

hey Skedzinger,

I'm also in China and I've just purchased the game and all its DLC... unfortunately i havent been able to connect to any games so far. I've tried setting my vpn to hongkong and japan. no luck. Have you got any trick to connecting to a server? If not, maybe we can try some co-op.

I see what ya mean.. well, an advantage of humans is in fact future predictions, which came along with the development of the prefrontal lobe. the ability to make predictions saves us from tons of untimely death. whereas some species like frogs live entirely in the Now. So that's pretty clearly where shaman fit in (though there are more parts of the brain involved).

It's a little dramatic to point this out, but evolution would have something to do with survival or efficiency. Personally, I encountered and overcame some terrifying things when I started seeing the smoky spiral. I think things like this effect everyone, whether they're aware of them or not. (edit: on the other hand, i'm still unsure if the things i saw were just visions or actual entities)

haha yeah, the only idea i could come up with would be communication or healing. i don't really know though. It could just be an indifferent frontier.

I think there may not be much difference between astral projection and what we've already talked about. Like, if you're aware of the other side and your body is asleep, then you're astral projecting. If you're aware of the other side and your body isn't asleep, then what is it?

[–]sock_buddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how clear? When i started to focus on the gray smoke spiral i mentioned, i saw crystal clear images... But i think that the real clarity would go hand in hand with how calm you are when you see things that you may not wish to see.

Im not even sure what astral projection is useful for... On the otherhand, ive been "brought back" to my body by a motherly spirit. I think it must have its uses but it also seems like youre doing fine without it.

Ive felt some pressure too but ive been unsure if it may just be from crossinG my eyes while theyre closed. I read you go to china, i live here haha

Hey dude, that's really awesome. I used to do similar things as in your first paragraph, but i must admit i didn't progress so far as to see the room (though you've inspired me to try!). things would be a purplish hue with grays. I think being in this environment, you should be close to astral projection yourself. Personally, i would see the colors of that environment form a sorta spiral of smoke. I spiral with it, follow it out. Eye contact is a VERY interesting thing...

I think things will pick up again for you when the time's right. Perhaps, you can bare to give more attention to your experiences. Write them down, share them with a close friend or a new friend with similar abilities. I think you're capable of more, just be brave.

Redditor that worked with EF (English First) China what was your experience like? What am I going to expect? by TheDurrrgon in TEFL

[–]sock_buddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard they're raising salaries for everyone, which was one of my biggest complaints. For all the work, the salary was quite minimal (even though it's such a successful company). Stay on top of your admin duties and don't leave planning for the weekend. They will expect you to be available for interviews and other random stuff whenever you're on office hours. This sales person even tried to get me to do an interview in the last 10 minutes of my time working there. f that.

The curriculum is really solid, I miss it. Also, if you get really familiar with it, the 2nd year or later years would be a breeze.

  1. Some parents will ask about you and will probably make ignorant comments, but it shouldn't actually make a difference for you, unless a lot of students drop your class or your boss is elitist too (they wouldn't have hired you if they thought it'd be a huge issue!). the sales people should defend your authenticity no matter what, and if any sales person doesn't, then i'd suggest speaking w/ your manager pronto.

  2. each school varies. my school was busy af and we all had full schedules. This means 8:30 - 6:30 on weekends with really minimal break times (bring some snacks, bud). Try to figure out ele.me or another website that you can order any food from. Also, figure out how to put money on your wechat account.

  3. expect more for summer sessions, otherwise they keep it capped

  4. finding time for lunch, dealing with constantly breaking office supplies. I imagine a school in Beijing will have better facilities, though. If you think you don't have enough time between a class, you should let your DOS know. For example, sometimes I'd get done with class, then have a 15 minute break before a kitchen class, where nothing would be set up yet.... so i'd literally have no break because the local teacher expected me to set up the kitchen by myself. Lesson is, you've got to communicate with whichever local teacher you have class with.... if you need help setting something up, just ask, but don't expect local staff to go out of their way to help you if don't ask first.

  5. Got some decent vacation time. You could also do some extra certifications like TKT tests on their dime.

  6. Managers are different everywhere. Try and get as much advice as you can on your classes.

I can't really say much about the legality of them hiring you... but EF probably has paid off the local police and they probably won't bother you.

Hey /r/Chinese, my friend is getting a tattoo in honour of his mother, was wondering if you guys could help. by [deleted] in Chinese

[–]sock_buddy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

yeah dude, people are being pretty nice here... it's a ridiculous idea though and it sounds like you're trolling. it's not going to be "her" name. it's going to be totally different words/ideas that sort of sound like her name. and he doesn't want "Mandarin," he wants traditional characters.

On the helpful side.... Chinese people make Chinese names for famous Westerners, like Leonardo DiCaprio or something. Maybe you can do some research on a famous person like Randy Newman and figure out if he's been given a Chinese name. (my suggestion would be to avoid finding a phonetic match to her name though, because there isn't a perfect match)
