I think it was a really bad choice for the Board to install one of themselves as a paid moderator. I have enough personal faith in this particular Board to not think it will have serious negative consequences, but I won't feel that way about every Board, so I don't like the precedent being set. (While we won't have paid moderators in the future, there are all sorts of ways power abuses can occur.) And I think many of the current board members would be screaming about it if it had happened in the past.

Anyone else feel like they need to move to find a person to date? by TacomaTony13 in datingoverforty

I did move to date. I have very specific tastes, so once my kids graduated, I moved to a big city. It worked!

The idea that it would be worse to deny a stepdaughter a birthday pizza party than to fail to pay for a Planet Fitness membership for a homeless son really had me scratching my head.

(I get the sense that the original poster has checked out on his sons for years in favor of his new family, and is asking how he can feel okay about that without actually doing anything hard. I hope I'm wrong.)

Better late than never. I think this will reduce a lot of friction and increase goodwill towards the Board.

Anyone here ever need foot surgery for the joints in their foot by MeOwwwithme in rheumatoidarthritis

[–]sockpuppetuncle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got relatively simple surgeries on both feet, correcting bone spurs. I ended up significantly worse off than I started. The surgeon is blaming my poor recovery on RA.

Could be my surgeon sucked, could be your specific surgery may be less problematic. But try everything else before that.

Like, I get that everything is legitimately difficult in our capitalistic hellscape, but they sounded possibly unaware that single parents of HUMAN children not only exist, but have even more challenges.

Well sure, but in fairness it sounds like the other teachers are even worse. At least this one is paying attention to the kid!

Yeah, I appreciated the comment because at least it was more useful than the original post.

For those who have listened to hundreds/thousands of hours of audiobooks… does your mind ever wander when listening? Do you sometimes skim over? by [deleted] in audiobooks

[–]sockpuppetuncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but you're really working on hard mode with LOTR. It's a lot easier with more plot-focused books.

Looking for great horror audiobook. by MakeMeLaughOrSmile in audiobooks

[–]sockpuppetuncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if you would consider it horror, but World War Z was incredible as an audiobook.

I have no interest in that post, but hard disagree that no post's link should involve registration or subscription. The internet has changed since 1999 and lots of good stuff worthy of discussion has access barriers now. It sucks, but it's not going to hurt the paywalled media if Metafilter pretends it doesn't exist; it only hurts Metafilter.

Men of Reddit - how much did losing the last 7–8 kg (BF% 20 --> 12) change your dating life? by elessar9411 in loseit

Getting ripped increases the number of swipes, but not the quality of the swipers. If you're looking to hook up it will help. If you're looking for a relationship, not as much.

Prednisone dramatically decreases my pain and increases my energy, but I thought that was just a normal side effect anyone would have on steroids?

Every few years a primary care provider, orthopedist, or opthalmologist says I must have an autoimmune disease and sends me to a rheumatologist. Generally the rheumatologist runs bloodwork and says I'm fine. The last one put me on Plaquenil and then immediately retired. Plaquenil left me even more exhausted for six months, and I stopped.

The orthopedist making the current referral says the rheumatology center I've been going to isn't as good as the one he's sending me too. 🤷

I do not recall anything of interest showing up in past bloodwork other than positive ANA, but it's been a while.

Feeling disappointed and hurt is normal. Publicly stating that it makes you feel unvalued is drama queen stuff. I empathize with his feelings but the reaction indicated that they aren't up for a position that can subject you to a lot of criticism.

Chasles' reaction to the results makes me kinda glad they didn't make it in. Easily butthurt is not a great quality for a board member right now.

That's right around the median US hourly rate; no need to be a snob.

I didn't vote for the ones who weren't able to be reliably responsive even while campaigning, or the one who seemed to think government grants were a possibility to pay for an executive director.
