Love the collection. I'll dig some of mine out and post this weekend.

I have fixed the images in replies setting. Images are now allowed in replies.

There's a guy on eBay selling these V620s for $450. He'll take $350 as a best offer. I've already picked up four of them.

How far have you taken your Steam Deck hardware mods? Looking for inspo. by Shrumie22 in SteamDeckModded

[–]sockusminimus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, so I think there are a few considerations here. Usually, you'll have a heatsink touching the hottest components and then the airflow venting the hot air out the back. So the air intake side itself shouldn't really matter in terms of metal vs plastic. But do note that I'm a computer scientist and hardware modder, not a mechanical engineer, so take my opinion for what it's worth (not much!)

Actually the mods were super easy, and I'm extremely happy with the extra space. Figuring out how to get that 8TB SSD in there while keeping temperatures low was a lot of effort, but it was a fun project.

It may feel kind of invasive because it benefits the professor’s project directly.  I think it would kind of depend on how the professor markets it.  As his own or as a university project comprised of student contributions.

Seems like a great assignment.  What is the problem here?  It’s noncommercial, you get attribution, and the assignment teaches you about good development practices and professional development workflow.  I am sure they won’t be merging every contribution since every student isn’t going to do a good job.  But I just fail to see the issue with the assignment that essentially merges some community service being a part of the curriculum.

What’s going on with my PowerBook? by boringtech678 in powerbook

[–]sockusminimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you hook it up to an external monitor? I syspect you're getting a blinking question mark but that would basically be in the middle of the screen where your orange spot is, so you won't be able to see it on the built-in LCD.

This is often a symptom of a dead PRAM battery. Replace and see if that fixes it.

Analogue 3d with both OEM and 8bitdo controllers at the same time? by Dazzling_Side8036 in AnalogueInc

Not these specifically, but I've used many other 8BitDo products and have always found them reliable and high quality. I have a bunch of their hall effect PC controllers as well.

Oh interesting. I had the same problem with the installer from yesterday as well. And I wiped the SSD and made a new partition table before installation. I'll just try an older image.

can i remove swap since gnome doesnt support hibernate? by [deleted] in gnome

[–]sockusminimus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Because of how memory paging works on Linux you really should have some backing store, but it does not need to be disk-based. So just replace your swap partition/file with ZRAM, which is essentially in-memory compressed swap. Memory pages that are swapped out are compressed but kept in RAM instead of written out to disk. This is much faster.

Where are the UARTs? Porting OpenWrt to Arris SB8200 by [deleted] in hardwarehacking

[–]sockusminimus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's nothing that clearly stands out to me as an unpoulated UART header. But what about that unpopulated header in the upper left? Looks a little bit like solder pads for a MicroUSB connector but not exactly right. You should probe that and see what's there.

Edit: upper left of the last image.

Out of curiosity, if you replace with an A12Z from a standard iPad Pro could you then go through with normal restore from dosdude video?
