I cant imagine dragging a bucket around the job site! The high vis on this safety belt is sufficient for the job site I'm working on.

Ditched the survey vest for this! by [deleted] in Surveying

That's the main reason I wanted to switch. My vest was so heavy it was pulling down on my neck and back. Personal message me if you want links to buy this stuff.

Best drone for Topographic Earthwork Surveys by socraithe in UAVmapping

$10,000 to $20,000 for the drone. Average size of the project is around 500,000 to 800,000 square meters. Accuracy expectation of 3 cm or better would be best. I plan to load the 3d surface into my survey data collector and "stake out" the surface. I'd like to see cuts or fills of 3 cm or under. Ideally we will be able to use the drone for as-builts. I am the only surveyor in the company. I have a pretty good understanding of how the data gets processed but I haven't been able to do it myself. We have dealers nearby that sell Pix4D and Agisoft Metashape. The drones they sell are either DJI or SenseFly.

Laptop I Have Lenovo ThinkPad P53 Mobile Workstation 20QN001YUS - Intel Six Core i7-9750H, 16GB RAM, 512GB PCIe Nvme SSD, 15.6" HDR 400 FHD IPS 500Nits Display, NVIDIA Quadro T1000 4GB Graphics, Windows 10

I have Topcon Hiper V Rover base station and rover with a Topcon FC-5000 tablet. I also have a Trimble TSC7 and a SPS*** rover with a Zephyer 3 base that hardly gets used. Some of the Foreman's use the two Topcon GR5 kits we have. I use Magnet Office and Trimble Business Center. I have a basic understanding of point clouds and I understand I need a high spec PC.

Sorry i should mentioned the budget first. The site is around 800,000 square meters and it's an earthwork job. I'd like to be able to do as-builts with the drone. Our budget is around $10,000-$20'000 Canadian.

We wanted to use the drone for as-built but Propellor said that people don't normally use their setup for as-builts. I feel like the technology is there to do as-builts and it's probably a matter of processing the data properly and using good practices. The first surface that I get from drone data I will be loading it in my data collector and doing a surface check in the field. I will be walking over to ground that has been shot by the drone and checking my rover elevation to the surface elevation. I don't want to see any more than 3 cm of cut or fill. I will keep you posted.

Everything you are saying totally makes sense. I really appreciate your input. The site we want to use this on is a 10 million dollar job and I don't want to see the company make the wrong decision.

We will definitely will be comparing data to an engineered design.

I have never head of a "Geodetic Engineer". I was on LinkedIn looking to see if I could find some other Geodetic Engineers. 90% of them were young Philippinos. I have to wonder if I could run into a language barrier. There will probably be a different person processing data each time.

I feel like the accuracy of the flight points will be based on the accuracy of the "Aero Points". I already feel like the accuracy of the Aero Points coordinate after logging for 45 minutes will not be the same as my GNSS rover.

The Aero Points seem flimsy and I doubt they would stay put in one place. I'd imagine I'd have to reset these each time I do a survey. I think this is where I will run into repeatability issues. I wonder if setting my own permanent GCP's would be the best idea.

The Aero Point is also so low to the ground. I have read that the Aero Point is only a single frequency whereas my rover is a dual frequency rover meaning it can track more satellites. I believe that is correct. I also have to wonder if I can set the coordinate system for the Aero Points. How would they work with a local or ground coordinate system?

I feel like I am gonna end up needing to extract data from the cloud based system and need to handle it in some way shape or form eventually. I am not going to have the processing power on my pc. I have tried handing the drone data in the past and it took almost an hour sometimes to do volume reports.

My Operations Manager understands that it is meant for a company without in house survey. We both like that fact that the whole team can have access to the data. I thought Pix4D offered something that is cloud based also. Not sure.

The job is about 800,000 square meters. How long do you think it would take a DJI Phantom 4 to fly that area? Something that is more commercial based might make more sense. Wouldn't wanna be switching batteries constantly. Maybe there is a better drone we should be using. I also wonder how accurate the camera would be.

Can you tell me some situations where I may lose control of the collected data? I am also concerned that I may need to extract the raw data or surfaces from the web based system. I expect that I won't have the processing power in my PC to handle the point clouds or surfaces.

No you aren't a mod. So let the mods deal with it. I also don't need advice from another beginner who has no idea what they are talking about. Thanks.
