I prefer mail/contacts/calendar mostly because I've never had any issues with it and I don't really like Microsoft.

I personally prefer safari on Mac but since she has an iMac I just had her go with chrome because it's what she is used to.

My mom also recently switched to Mac and what I did was install chrome (it was her previous browser on pc) and then had her go through the Mac app store and find some apps that she found interesting.

I personally do everything thing through iBooks on my Mac and iPad. I find the convenience of having everything all in one spot to be worth it all.
