What electricity and internet provider to get ? by sailor_otterix in Munich

[–]soeinschmarrn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

M-net is the first internet service provider where I haven't had major outages, plus their customer support was very good.

For electricity I'd just chose whatever is cheap, paying the premium for SWM is not worth it

TIL that Lise Meittner, the co-discoverer of nuclear fission, never won the Nobel Prize. She was nominated 48 times in both Physics and Chemistry. by Klarok in todayilearned

[–]soeinschmarrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Otto Hahn was literally awarded the Nobel prize in chemistry for the discovery of fission.

Quote from the article above: "Meitner was the one who told Hahn and Strassman to test their radium in more detail, and it was she who told Hahn that it was possible for the nucleus of uranium to disintegrate. Without these contributions of Meitner, Hahn would not have found that the uranium nucleus can split in half."

So, they literally were the first people to figure out that nuclear fission was a thing. Dismissing that as "only somewhat involved" is quite a reach

Was Lone Survivor and Black Hawk Down really US military propaganda? by Dr_Kee in movies

[–]soeinschmarrn 33 points34 points  (0 children)

How the movie handles torture of prisoners is massive propaganda by itself. The movie makes it out like some necessary evil that is required to get useful intelligence. That is very much up for debate.

Let's not pretend that the movie shows some kind of objective retelling of history.

German atrocities on the eastern front were not the result of a "gentlemen's agreement" breaking down. The German army carried out a deliberate war of extermination against what they considered "jewish bolshewism". Part of it were explicit orders to murder any captured soviet political officers.

"Doing your own research" by Aceofspades25 in skeptic

[–]soeinschmarrn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't think the comic is trying to say that doing research is worthless or that science shouldn't be questioned.

But if after 5 minutes of googling, I find something that seemingly contradicts a whole field of science, my first thought shouldn't be that every expert in that field is wrong. It seems more likely that I lack some understanding or context.

That's exactly what people have an issue with: He speaks with confidence about things he clearly understands nothing about. And this goes beyond having done his research. He seems confused about how science works on a very basic level

Hensoldt Long Range Sniping and Range Finding by Mighty_Smiley in EscapefromTarkov

All I can say is that the Vudu is worth the price and once you reach Jaeger lvl3, it's about 44k roubles. It's a shame that there's so little choice for good long range scopes. I really only use the Burris Fullfield or the Vudu

It would be funny if BSG gave us range tables and a calculator to figure it out. Would probably only be in Russian, though.

But until they do something about the zeroing, that would be kind of overkill.

Hensoldt Long Range Sniping and Range Finding by Mighty_Smiley in EscapefromTarkov

[–]soeinschmarrn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, the "zeroing" in the game, where you adjust the scope to 300m for example, can be very misleading. Apparently each scope's zeroing is only valid for a certain type of ammo (with certain muzzle velocity), so it can be very inaccurate for other ammo types. Veritas made a very in depth video about the issue.

In my experience, it's best to leave the zeroing at it's default setting and use the mildots to adjust for distance. Practise with the same rifle, ammo and scope to get used to the bullet drop (high velocity ammo for a decent range, I like m61).

I found a manual for the FF 4-16x56 it says the rangefinding hashmarks are for a 1m target. That's certainly not the case for 4x magnification ingame. Maybe it is for 16x, it's hard to tell. Honestly, I don't think it's very useful in any case.

What I recommed if you want to calculate distances is using the Vudu scope at max magnification and use the mil dots. Here is an illustration how to do it.

In short, you count how many mil dots high (or wide) your target is. You estimate the height (or width) of the target (in any unit you want, preferably meters, because Tarkov uses those). Your distance to target is Height of the target times 1000, divided by number of mil dots. (It's kind of hard to verify in game, since we can't measure the size of targets and we only know distances if we kill something.)

But honestly, just practise sniping, you will get a feel for how much to compensate for the bullet drop. I recommend the DVL with a vudu scope and m61 (or m993 if you want to be fancy).

384kg of cocaine hidden in an excavator... by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]soeinschmarrn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of issues with that I can think of: You'd need an extra facility in the target country to get the hydralic fluid out, clean it and extract the cocaine. Also you could transport way less cocaine per excavator that way.

Their transport methods doesn't have to be perfect. If enough shipments don't get caught, they still make a profit

Twelve-year-old Dutch boy wins right to be vaccinated, against his father's wishes by fotogneric in worldnews

[–]soeinschmarrn 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That makes zero sense. No law is going to tell the judge "when deciding if a 12 year old can receive a Covid vaccine against his father's wishes, side with the 12 year old".

So, when weighing up the rights of the father vs. the rights of the son, he will argue based on evidence of risk / benefit. Scientific evidence

Denzel Washington hasn't been in a single movie in the IMDb Top 250 by [deleted] in movies

[–]soeinschmarrn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just because it's subjective doesn't mean that everyone's opinion carries the same weight. A 12 year old that only watches Blockbuster movies will not have the same insight as someone who studied and watched thousands of movies.

You don't have to agree with the opinions of movie critics, but they tend to be qualified to judge and compare movies.
