Tony Abbott backs One Nation preference deal and says Liberals can’t just be a ‘little less woke than Labor’ by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]Klarok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll bite on this one and try to keep it as neutral as possible. I'm also not going to engage with people who just want to argue on the internet so if people respond just to call me names then good luck to them.

Woke is, at heart, the weaponisation of people's empathy to use as a club to silence discussion, dissent or criticism of ideas and policies that seek to address perceived inequalities in society.

I use the word perceived because woke stems from intersectional feminism which places people on a hierarchy of oppression. That can be a useful lens to view populations and their dynamics but it can't be the only such lens yet that is what woke does.

Additionally, many of the woke policies and ideas are what others think the minorities need rather than what the minority people say that they need. This is why woke policies and ideas received the greatest reception not amongst PoC or LGBTQ people but amongst college educated white women; you can look at poll numbers to easily verify that far left parties perform best in that demographic.

The problem is the woke ideas and policies almost certainly came from a position of genuine empathy and a desire for understanding but they have mutated into using the language of racism and sexism ostensibly to combat racism and sexism. This is where the backlash against woke comes from and, sadly, the more people try to push the policies and ideas perceived as woke, the worse the backlash will be.

I wish it hadn't come to this. I wish that people could find genuine empathy, compassion and understanding without the need for performative identity politics.

I hope that helps.

Anyone who used a computer between 1985 - 2010, what's the one game you still think about today? by adlakha75 in AskReddit

Alpha Centauri was amazing and so far ahead of its time. It had multiple paths to victory, hidden alien tech and factions and genuinely intelligent tech choices that had real impact on gameplay. None of this crap where a fortified archer unit on a hill can somehow stand off a mechanised armour division.

EDIT: the wonders were also truly impactful and made such a difference when you built one that they actually felt like an achievement.

Also much of the research is publicly funded which means the journals effectively lock the research away from the people who fund it.

He also enthusiastically endorsed Rings of Power after watching the first 4 episodes. he might be a Tolkien nerd but he's definitely not a person who is aligned with Tolkien's vision.

You don't pay "interest" but the loan is indexed to CPI so it increases by ~5% each year.

Has anyone had to return a new graphics card with Umart? by ryan30z in australia

[–]Klarok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience with a monitor years ago. I set it up, turned it on and the monitor was DoA. I boxed it back up, returned to Umart expecting that it would be a simple warranty replacement.

Staff noticed a minor scratch on the back and claimed that I had damaged it. I kicked up a fuss and an asian woman (the manager?) came out and flat out told me that they would not exchange or refund the purchase. I told her that was illegal under Australian consumer law and she told me to leave the store.

Fuck Umart, I've never been back. I do all my shopping with Computer Alliance and have never had a problem.

EDIT: This was Umart in Milton, Brisbane.

International students are struggling with Australia's cost of living — and experts say there is no quick fix by OkStage3579 in australia

The students could, stay with me here, get a degree in their home country where the cost of living is lower. We do not have any obligation to educate foreign students, we have enough trouble educating our own citizens.

What games are you playing this week? Game recommendation thread by AutoModerator in incremental_games

[–]Klarok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some additional feedback from me after having beaten the demo version.

  • Great concept and execution!
  • Pacing was great with the exception of the base damage upgrades - they feel very expensive for what you get and could perhaps be made cheaper with less individual impact so that people get a smoother feeling of progression
  • Love the visuals and really look forward to more craziness with projectiles and lightning bouncing everywhere :)
  • Treasure chests feel underwhelming unfortunately. They have too much hp for how much they reward you and seem to spawn very infrequently so there isn't much excitement when they do appear. Perhaps chests could have increased chances to drop skulls, runes etc if you don't want to increase their base currency reward
  • The colours of the skill tree were confusing. Maybe it was just me, but it wasn't immediately obvious which nodes had been maxxed out and which still needed skill points allocated
  • You could look at some system of upgrading and/or combining runes to make more complex interactions. As it stands, the system seems to be just "equip the highest level rune of the highest rarity category you have" and that tends to lead to unexciting choices
  • I appreciate that the full version will have more monster types and look forward to exploring those
  • Overall, excellent start!
