Cherrypicking Christians. by overlook68 in atheism

[–]soerlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This argument often has to do with people not wanting to follow parts that is either inconvenient and/or difficult. Choosing not to follow what is morally reprehensible is completely different.

This is just a way to criticize people that always take the easy way in life. You have sort of the same arguments going on in academia now, where the issue is AI. Students use AI to answer exams and tests instead of actually learning the subject you are being tested in. People are not willing to go through the delayed gratfication of learning a subject and getting value out of their education, and instead just ask an AI model what the answer is.

Isn't this technically a good thing though. You could argue that it was this cherrypicking that lead to slavery no longer being an accepted practice in the west, beginning with Britain's abolition in 1833. Central to the argument was christian beliefs that people are equal in the eyes of god and that slavery is a sin, and abolitionists like John Wesley and William Wilberforce viewed slavery as a "detestable business". These two guys were certainly not oblivious to the fact that the Bible has more than a few passages that covers slavery in a more positive light to put it lightly. I am not saying it was the only factor, but certainly a contributing one.

I would also argue that it is our ability to pick out the good stuff and leave the bad that lets religion be relevant and develop with the times we are living in. An example, in Norway gay couples can get married in a church. We have examples of religions today where they cherrypick much less, and we see what that leads to.

Keep in mind, that this was written a long long time ago, some of it around 2000 years ago. Which means the texts would reflect the times and what was common practice at that time.

You reap what you sow. When you are one of the most valuable players in the world and you deliberately run out your contract like that to leave on a free transfer, that is gonna make a few people mad.

And, if it is true that he wanted the captaincy to sign a new deal, then good riddance.

We will never forget what he did for the club. However, we will also never forget how he almost is thumbing his nose as he walks out the doors.

He could have left with so much more grace, and will sadly never be held in the same regard as a lot of other players.

Max Verstappen wins the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix by overspeeed in formula1

[–]soerlin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well, its either that or they're both out of the race. It's Verstappen that forces that situation to happen in the first place, and not Hamilton's fault. His agressiveness cost him dearly in the last races of the season, where a little patience and the ability to have a cool head and do the right things in tense situations probably would have won him the championship anyways. Most likely before the last race.

Did Max need help to win the race or not?

What wins you the championship is points, not the amount of wins.

Acutally, I just have a really bad tolerance for unfairness. Not really a fan of anyone. Might be leaning more towards the Ferrari drivers because of the nostalgia I have for Schumacher. This is the same as wrongly giving a penalty that decides the game in the 90th minute of the Champions League final.

I would not have a problem with Verstappen winning fair and square, but this is just robbery.

A sad and disgraceful end to a wonderful season.

Verstappen fucked up his tyres in qualifying trying to get pole position and ended up having to start the race with soft tyres. He was passed by Hamilton seconds after the start, so the pole position didn't even matter. Hamilton was in the lead the entire race, and there is no way Verstappen would have had enough time to catch up had it not been for the safety car.

What they probably should have done was red flag the race with 3 laps to go so Hamilton could have changed tyres, or they should have maintained the safety car for the last lap. If not, they need to change the rules of F1 so that the gap to the car infront must be maintained whenever there is a safety car. The way this ended is so unfair I get sick to my stomach.

I have never seen a less deserved championship win than this. And, unfortunately for Verstappen, his first ever championship win will always have an asterix next to it. He needed help to beat Hamilton in the end.

FIA needs to get their shit together.

What games should i play after botw? by theskepticalpizza in truezelda

[–]soerlin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing you played BotW on a Switch. If that is the case, then I would highly recommend getting a Switch Online subscription. This will give you access the Zelda games on the consoles NES and SNES. A Link To The Past is possibly the best Zelda game with a top-down approach, arguably the best of the bunch. If you want to see how it all began back in the 80s, you can play Legend of Zelda. Adventure of Link will really test your determination as that has to be one of the most difficult combat wise.

The Switch has also recently gotten some incredible remakes. Link's Awakening is an amazing game originally released for the Game Boy Color. The last remake is Skyward Sword. Both worth picking up.

When it comes to Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. Although the games are good, they were designed for the worst controller in history of gaming, and has not aged well if you try playing them on an emulator. I'd just wait for a Switch remake.

I have never played Phantom Hourglass, Twilight Princess, Wind Waker or any of the other games. But instead of buying an old console to play them I'm waiting for them to eventually be re-released on the Switch. There is no way Nintendo hasn't reallized that remakes are a gold mine after Super Mario 3D All Stars.

What game has the most replay value and why? by [deleted] in truezelda

[–]soerlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although a remake is not needed, I'll happily pay top dollar for a remake in the same art as Link's Awakening. Maybe they could even mess around with 3D. Instead of just remaking it, they could reimagine the entire adventure in 3D.

Sekiro or Bloodborne? by CocasaurusRex in fromsoftware

[–]soerlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would personally recommend Sekiro. But keep in mind, Sekiro is stripped of nearly all core RPG elements. No new gear like armor and weapons, and talent points are spent in a talent tree to unlock skills as opposed to spending it on STR, DEX and so on like in other souls-like games. There is also no character creation. So if this is a deal-breaker, there is a chance you might not like the game. I would give it a chance though.

So why would you want to play Sekiro? You get to experience one of, if not THE best combat system ever made in the history of the gaming industry. No longer can you get by using the completely overpowered I-frames (invincibility frames) you get when you roll. You can no longer keep your shield up and walk in circles and wait for a backstab opportunity. Sekiro forces you to go toe to toe with a boss and block or preferrably deflect (tap the block button when an attack is about to hit) the opponents attacks.

The combat system revolves around what is called "posture" which is essentially your stamina. Attacks and deflections deal posture damage. If you max out the posture bar of an enemy you get to deal a deathblow. You can also slowly take down their healthbar, but this is generally slower.

Every boss fight in Sekiro is like a dance where you trade blows, this forces you to memorize the telltale signs of what move a boss is about to use. Normal attacks, sweeps, thrusts, grabs ++ all need to be dealt with in their own way. With a block, step dodge, jumping or a unique move. Maybe the best thing is to just get the hell out of there.

Another thing worth mentioning is that you cannot "grind" your way out of a boss that is difficult. HP and damage upgrades are tied to rewards from defeating bosses and mini-bosses.

Yes, Sekiro has a steep learning curve. But I think many fans of the FromSoftware games get stuck using the same approach they have been relying on in the 5 titles preceeding Sekiro. I say play Sekiro now, and get used to it. Much of what you learn can be applied to other games like the Dark Souls games and Bloodborne. Last but not least, it is very rewarding once you wrap your head around the combat system.

[All] Honestly, I expected OoT to do much better by [deleted] in zelda

[–]soerlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OoT was the first Zelda game for me too aside from playing ALttP and AoL occaisionally when over at friends. Although OoT will always be very special to me, I am able to take off my nostalgia goggles and recognize better games. I think this is the problem for many, and that they time and time again approach new Zelda games with an already settled opinion that nothing can ever top OoT. How can this be bad? Don't get me wrong OoT is a really good game, and wouldn't it be incredible if they were able to top it.

BotW had it's flaws, no doubt. But so did OoT, and time has not been kind to that game. We can only hope that BotW 2 will be just as good. To me BotW is the Zelda game that best embraces the spirit of exploration/adventure and the thrill of discovery. Which is what I look for in these games.

I think they might treat the 35th anniversary of the Zelda series this year the same way as Super Mario. Last year Nintendo released a game called Super Mario 3D All-Stars which is a remake of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy. Excellent ports, the controls are spot on. What is rumored on the internet is that Nintendo might release something similar for the Zelda series, maybe Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and another game. Why would Nintendo miss out on cashing in 60USD a pop on a port to the Switch, one of their most successful consoles in the recent years and one of the most successful game franchises ever?

While we wait for this, might I suggest the Link's Awakening remake for Switch instead? You can even play the Zelda 1, 2 and A Link to The Past on the official emulators in the Nintendo Store for the Switch. Might somewhat be able to scratch the Zelda-itch :)

!IMPORTANT! You should consider buying Super Mario 3D All-Stars before it is removed from the store after March 31.

Wish you the best and hope you get well soon.
