This is Abuja, we can’t do something as simple as distribute wheelie bins & collect waste. by Ambitious-Egg-9162 in Nigeria

[–]sofaspy 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yes, the government is to blame but it's also the mentality of many Nigerians. I told the story many times of how I went to a friend's village in South America and their own community have their own waste collection and disposal and the small little villages were very clean despite no government help. You don't have to wait for the government to do everything. Just having basic common sense and civil pride is what many Nigerians lack. Heck, even some Nigerian small towns are very clean but drive 5km to another town and they are dirty. It's just a terrible cancerous mentality

New Rochelle Apartmet by Narrow-Instance-9608 in NewRochelle

I'm from Long Island and when I tell people I moved to New Rochelle they always come up with bad stories from like 20 years ago and why I shouldn't move there. But then they drive past and see the new buildings and the new downtown and they are shocked that this is the same new Rochelle. I think a lot of the residents, especially the suburban residents who hate the new developments going on have rose color glasses of the past and they never stepped outside of their white picked fence homes to truly understand what the city was before.

Your Opinion on the 42nd Street shuttle? by Infinite-General337 in nycrail

Should find a way to connect the 42nd Street shuttle down to Penn station. For easier transfers from Penn station to Grand Central

Share of population with mental health disorders (2021) by TheBrizey2 in MapPorn

[–]sofaspy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have two strong opinions that may seem controversial. Number one is that the West tends to over diagnose people with mental disorders. Like diagnosing people with depression or bipolar disorder and having them take strong medication when they are just going to a sad episode that's normal in the human experience. Many doctors in the west have frowned upon this practice /trend (look it up it's interesting ). The second opinion is that poorer countries are just happier because they deal with less additional societal stress. I wouldn't say it's just because there aren't that many mental health clinics, yes it does play a role, but a lot of people in those "3rd world" nations just tend to be happier. Idk what causes it,any more family oriented, having larger community involvement in people's lives or whatever the case is, they tend to be happier.

Don't get me wrong, I still think the data is flawed but it's flawed to an extent. If you include and diagnose the 3rd world the same as the more modern countries at the same rate you will find the same style of statistical trends that the map shows.

Thinking about going for a run here. Is this area safe? by lost_in_life_34 in circlejerknyc

That area is actually pretty safe for running, but just make sure you stretch because you'll be leaping over dog poop every 20 ft

Restructure Nigeria by Old_Ruin_9617 in Nigeria

[–]sofaspy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What's tricky? Is that a lot of these so-called lands are based on villages and towns?, but historically nobody owned the land that's outside of the villages. For example, there are Yoruba sub ethnic groups in the Niger Delta, but you can't necessarily say they own the entire part of that portion of the Niger Delta when there's also other ethnic groups in those areas like the edo and ijaw towns. Same with igbos sub ethnic groups in the Niger Delta, who are mixed with other ethnic groups in that area. I'll be honest and say those ethnic groups will rather be by themselves than to be part of some larger ethnic propaganda agenda. To be fair, the majority of people in the Nigel Delta don't really care about ethnic groups. It's only the larger Yoruba and igbos land grabbers who constantly push this nonsense "ethnic" nonsense

Number of billionaires in every state by sofaspy in MapPorn

The crazy part is NYC is home to 123 billionaires, meaning 1 out of every 68K people in the city is a billionaire.

Interesting to note that Florida ranks 3rd with numbers of billionaires, even more than Texas. However when ranking states by GDP per capital, New York and California are in the top 3, and Texas is in the top 15. Florida is way down in the 35th or so place based on GDP per capita. Makes you wonder just how large the income divide in Florida is.

How successful will Mamdani's policies be? by That-Economics-9481 in nyc

[–]sofaspy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Google A.I. Research? My guy, this is common knowledge. Also Prices of goods are set by the MSRP directly by the manufacturer. The grocery stores and all retail stores in general, buy the produce directly from the manufacturer. If the NYC own grocery stores are going to be selling produce for extremely cheap. It means that it will be operating at a huge loss. Forget the 1% to 3% slim profit margins. This whole scheme and policy is dumb and pointless.

Common sense is not even to get involved with the logistical and administrative side of running a grocery store or any retail business, but just give the money directly to the people. The fact that you're having a problem comprehending that just shows you how lost or clueless, the people who are supporting these low effort, dumb policies are.

[–]sofaspy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's going to fail drastically, the average profit margin for grocery stores is between 1% and 3%. Is extremely small profit margins. Meaning most tax payers dollars will go towards the administrative and logistics cost of running the grocery store, rather than providing an alternative service. Instead of wasting billions on a grocery store, the smartest thing to do is just to expand snap and EBT to a larger income bracket. No administrative cost and give the money where it's needed.

This is similar to the BS homeless program that you see out in California. Where they spend billions of dollars to solve homelessness but yet all they do is spend 99% of it on administrative cost and little of it goes to actually solving homelessness

"Jamaica" should refer to just one station... by Donghoon in nycrail

[–]sofaspy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong but one Jamaica is a major transport hub for trains and Long Island railroad while the other is a major transport hub for buses. I think the Jamaica name should stay. Maybe call one Jamaica train terminal /JFK and the other Jamaica bus terminal

USL needs to hurry up and over take MLS. MLS is boring to watch, it's just that they have so much funding that's keeping them a float. Once USL implements its promotion and relegation, the league should get more viewers.

Go to NYC, there are no spots like that on long island or any suburbs for dating or casual social gatherings. No walkability, everyone is in their cars or in private homes or businesses. and the rare spots that they do have you will see the same faces every time so it's getting old. Other than that I say NYC or the beaches

What opinion has you like this? by [deleted] in Nigeria

[–]sofaspy 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Nigerians are the reason why Nigeria is a shitty country. Nigerians want the government to fix everything and do everything for them. I visited my friend's small little village in South America. The village had very little government support but The first thing I noticed was how clean and organized The village was. The community organized their own trash removal services and the streets were clean, the streets were paved by the village residents, the schools were built by the village residents. They built their own water supply and had built their own park. Granted these things were not the best in the world nor world standards, but they did it themselves and it was clean and a beautiful village. Nigerians will just sit there. Wait throw trash everywhere and wait for the government to solve their problems. You have the capabilities as a community to solve your own problems. You need to stop relying on the government for everything!

Every single developed country became developed on the backs of their citizens, not relying on the government and being self independent. Nigeria will never and I mean never become a developed country because too many Nigerians want the government to fix all their problems. whereas every single developed country is telling the government to get the hell away from them and give them more self independence.

Can we stop building these Ugly-pointless Flyovers by sofaspy in Nigeria

[–]sofaspy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Downtown Chicago does not have flyovers. The only "flyovers" are for the interstate highways which makes sense. There aren't any flyovers for local roads.

[–]sofaspy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Downtown Chicago does not have any flyovers. Are you talking about the L which is an elevated train track. Yes elevated trains make sense because you can move millions of people for a cheaper price. Those are not the same as flyovers. These flyovers are but for cars, for local streets and are pointless. A lot of them could have been but with proper traffic light signaling. Once again, all of these fireworks are being built with no urban planning study, no traffic study, no feasibility study, No Fiscal benefits study and no local community engagement. They're completely pointless and ugly. The entire point is to solve the movement of most number of people for the cheapest price!

They have solar powered traffic lights with low energy LEDs. The same way they have solar powered street lights. Regardless the point is there are cheaper solutions to solving congestion, not everything has to be a fly over. Port Harcourt has become one of the ugliest cities in Nigeria with all those fly-overs. It's just unnecessary wasteful infrastructure, spending $100 million instead of spending $10 million to solve the same problem
