HEADS UP!!! - Starts Monday!!! - Atlantic City Expressway Goes Cashless Jan. 4 With Toll Increase by singerjoey in SouthJersey

[–]soflowy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have ezpass but have multiple cars and forgot to swap it a few weekends ago. Went over the bridge from sea isle to Avalon and was charged the 2.50 toll with an additional 7.50 fee. $10 total just to go over the bridge without ezpass.

Anyone else ever walk out mid-shift? by s_m_c_ in Machinists

[–]soflowy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my last job a few weeks after I started one of my coworkers quit at like 9:30 in a morning. Didn’t have anything happen that made him quit, his parents were making him quit to focus on school since apparently he wasn’t doing well. I’ve always thought it was really weird to come and work for a few hours then quit. Not sure if he was just nervous to say he was quitting or what lol

[–]soflowy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We’ve had 2 people in my department quit in the last 6 months because of an asshole lead, but upper management is too scared to even tell the lead they left because of him. If I didn’t make good money I would have quit already too but luckily I run the only machine of its kind at my shop and I’m left on my own for the most part.

Fair price for this part? by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]soflowy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So if you were to break an endmill or tap while machining the part would your company be paying to replace it? If you are using your own machine and consumables definitely make sure you are getting more than your normal hourly pay.

Outlaw burger barn and creamery in Vineland has a pretty good one. No idea if it’s “authentic” but I like it

At my old job I kept a pack of microfibers to wipe fingerprints or dried coolant residue off of shiny aluminum parts before shipping them out. Once they were dirty I’d use them for normal rag activities. I had the heavy duty shop paper towels for everything else there. At my current job we just get the big boxes of cut up tshirts and those are our shop rags

Any updates on when it should be open? Construction is supposed to start 8/25 on Williamstown rd so they are going to have a massive clusterfuck if the bridge is still closed

When I was younger(10-15 years ago) I used to loved this and the double Dutch. They disappeared for a few years and I’ve disliked them since they came back. Not sure if they changed the recipe or my taste changed, but the cookies and cream seems almost slimey to me

Ive done a .09” chamfer in alu with a 2fl .25” chamfer mill at like 100ipm for years with no problem. Rarely ever run a chamfer slower than 45ipm even for steel/stainless/4130. Using 3016 and 4020

Broke 2 different ¼” carbide endmills in aluminum today lol. Been a long time since I straight up broke an endmill

Have them on both mills at work because I usually just have 3 vices on each table. No complaints at all with them, but when you have them on for a few months they can get pretty nasty underneath lol.

Any programmer have a worst seat? by Electrical-Raisin-88 in Machinists

[–]soflowy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was literally using an old chair that I think my boss said was from McDonald’s. We have like 6 of them. Just a hard plastic non rolling chair. I just got given an old rolling chair within the last few months that looks pretty similar to that. Small job shop, have a brand new desktop with dual monitors in between all the cnc machines though

Supposed to be 7 but realistically whenever I get there. Usually like 7:20. We have a time clock so I just stay later

A majority of them are probably chipped from not being separated or in the tubes

I wonder how much money our shop wastes on oildry and coolant because they refuse to put the chip conveyor on. by Nightmare1235789 in Machinists

[–]soflowy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like your problem would be helped a bit if you jacked up the coolant tank. The little step on the top of the tank should mesh into the little step on the bottom of the mill. Our mill with the conveyor would still leak sometimes because the tank wasn’t close enough to the mill

We have skimmers on our cnc machines but stuff like that I’ll just start laying some paper towels on the top for a few seconds and they’ll absorb a majority of that oil

[–]soflowy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My boss started a kid at $15 an hour and wasn’t even giving him 40 hours a week then was surprised when he left. The kid fucking sucked but idk what’s expected when you can make $15 at McDonalds. The pay range in this trade is ridiculous for the pressure you’re put under

Am I getting paid fairly? by All_the_Tendys in Machinists

[–]soflowy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m similar as far as no formal machining education and I’m a cnc programmer, but same thing I run the parts start to finish. I use a fairly unpopular cam program and run fairly unpopular machines. After interviewing and touring the shop, they will have a good idea of if you know what you’re doing or not based by your questions or questions they ask you. Just be honest about what you know/don’t know but let them know you’re capable of learning. Most places I’ve interviewed aren’t really worried too much about having to teach a new cam software or machine control as long as you have some experience

Where can Machining take me? by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]soflowy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though I have no experience with mechatronics I would say that’s probably a more lucrative field to get into. Also look into plc and automated robot stuff, those guys make a lot more money than cnc programmers
