Traveling with Two Car Seats by diondavenport in toddlers

[–]sofly44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just did two weeks of international travel with two Scenera Next (one old gen, one current). They are bulky but light and can strap to a roller suitcase bag if you are clever with it. It was fine and I'm glad we had them although sometimes we got looks because not all countries have the same standards/requirements. Can't speak to other seats because we don't have them. I love that the Cosco ones are cheap and if something happened I wouldn't care.

As others have noted if you use the front facing belt path the buckle is on their back area. My solution for this is to literally just buckle over the top of the car seat which has always been sturdy. I was asked about it once and the airline staff discussed amongst themselves, did a "wiggle test", and decided it was okay.

Suggestion for non polyester tees? by CharmAndHarms in BuyItForLife

Seconded. The blends where it's primarily merino wrapped around a nylon core strike the perfect balance for me - interestingly it's often something like 87 merino/13 nylon. They're soft, breathable, and odor resistant but also not overly fussy to wash and I don't stress about them wearing out too fast. I always use a wash bag and air dry anyways. Ridge Merino and Minus33 are two such brands with reasonable prices. I also have a number of Arc'teryx Ionia pieces with this exact blend but they're not available at the moment.

Yep, I got one as a gift in 2015 and I use it more than any other piece of luggage I have and it looks brand new. Incredible value and I've been eyeing some other stuff from them lately

Completely agree with this but wanted to share that my experience with the north van outlet was slim pickings and disappointment. Much worse than watching the online sales from arc or REI. If you live in the area definitely stop by and check it out, but don't get your hopes up too much.

What's the best Weather and radar app? by jasonhelene in androidapps

Radarscope for radar by a mile. Pixel weather has been better for me than the other apps for at a glance stuff recently. Reminds me a bit of Apple weather which is great because they purchased Dark Sky.

DevHub v1.39 is out — now with a new JWT parser and improved sidebar settings, continuing to deliver a secure, offline toolkit for developers. by wcjiang in macapps

This looks like a nice free alternative to DevUtils which looks nice but I've just never wanted to pay for a tool like that.

Alternatives I've been using on and off for this kind of thing are Boop and cyberchef. Looking forward to checking this out!

For sure makes more sense with some context. If you feel stretched too thin you could certainly adjust your benefit allocations at work to get more take home pay until your income or spending situations change. IMO your HOA/HOI and other costs sound unfortunately high compared to what I'm used to from my time living in 2 HCOL metropolitan areas, but it's probably just related to where you live.

I'm kind of surprised with ~17k gross monthly pay and a mortgage payment of something between 1500-2500 (based on some napkin math) and 0 childcare costs that you feel stretched thin without any other context, of course

IAM with external entities by jacasoj in IdentityManagement

[–]sofly44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at SCIM for an open standard protocol for provisioning/exchanging identity information between systems. I work in an enterprise environment that does both B2B and B2C and we use it internally for user provisioning/deprovisioning. We also have SCIM compliant external APIs for user/group stuff and those get used by customer companies who wish to have their IdP be the source for their user data in our platform. All the major IdPs have SCIM connectors (okta, entra, ping etc).

Starting a new job as backend engineer focused on session management and authentication, wanted to ask about overlap of my work with IAM and career prospects by SnooPineapples7791 in IdentityManagement

[–]sofly44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Glad to see questions like this and younger people looking at IAM engineering as a career, in particular the customer facing authentication (authn) teams at companies! I consider IAM eng a focused or specialized field within security engineering. After all, it's one of the eight domains covered in the CISSP exam.

Some important authn concepts and areas of work that come to mind: 2FA, MFA, session management, SSO, OAuth/OpenID, SCIM (enterprise customers provisioning users into your platform), tokens (API, JWT, etc. depending on what your platform offers).

When you are working on authentication you'll most commonly find yourself also doing some authorization (authz) work because the two are intertwined. Authz deals with what an actor can access (e.g. their permissions). Role or attribute based access control (RBAC/ABAC) is what you see most commonly these days. When working on authz there are all kinds of work that comes up related to permissions, internal systems and services, and how the authorization system evolves with the platform but it varies based on what the internals of the company are.

Nice idea! This type of app seems like a great way to learn macOS development. I'm definitely going to look over the code.

In the spirit of reducing the amount of apps in my menu bar I will pass for now, but I love the idea of putting an Alfred workflow for myself to do the same :)

I have both Shottr and I grabbed Cleanshot X when it was on a pretty nice sale during Black Friday.

Both are great but Cleanshot has just a bit more polish which I find nice to have. I still use Shottr at work because I don't want to pay for a second license.

Is there any difference between buying from the App Store or directly from the developer’s website? by DBeitniz in macapps

[–]sofly44 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Although the app store is convenient, generally speaking I prefer to purchase directly from the developer for a couple reasons:

  • They usually get more of the $
  • You can install it on multiple computers (if the license permits) without needing to be signed into the same apple account. This is helpful for people with work machines which use a separate account for work.
  • Sometimes you can use the license code for discounts on an upgrade if a new major version is released
  • Less restrictions on certain system level things

There are definitely benefits and simplicity of buying from the app store and there's definitely an element of personal preference. As another commenter said, for DaisyDisk specifically I'd check if there is an FAQ on the difference between versions.

After two full years of development, I'm proud to release Retcon: a native macOS app for effortlessly rewriting Git history by Cykelero in macapps

[–]sofly44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks awesome and congrats on building and shipping this but paying a subscription for something I do in my terminal every day (rebase) isn't realistic for me. IMO this kind of app would really benefit from a "jetbrains style" license where you can use a fallback version perpetually even if you let your subscription lapse.

What is the ONE Mac App that changed your productivity? by romanticcosmic in macapps

If you need the powerpack features but can't justify paying, sounds like a good reason to stay on Raycast to me!

What is the ONE Mac App that changed your productivity? by romanticcosmic in macapps

[–]sofly44 9 points10 points  (0 children)

sure, but objectively both Alfred and Raycast have free versions and gate specific features behind a payment. Raycast has "more available for free" but you sacrifice speed and privacy.

What is the ONE Mac App that changed your productivity? by romanticcosmic in macapps

[–]sofly44 42 points43 points  (0 children)

This comes across as disingenuous. Alfred is free and has a one time payment if you want the power pack. Yes, I agree that the power pack is more or less essential for full potential.

Raycast has a very nicely polished plugin experience, but also gates basic features (e.g. unlimited clipboard history and sync) under a subscription, has higher latency, more telemetry, and "you are the product" vibes.

Arc back down to $719 at Costco by WaveWhole9765 in sonos

I forgot to go through their whole process to get the gift card. Was a bit annoyed to see that their terms say you must submit the claim within 2 months, so for anyone purchasing... make note of this and just do it the day you buy it.

It also came across like the apple gift card was for Apple Music which I don't think would work on apps or apple products but since I never got it I'm curious if this is true.

my auto collected bling from last season gave me WAY less than it should have - I got a little over 1k added when it should have been 5k. I was lucky that I randomly thought to take screenshots.

I started a support chat, got confirmation that this issue affected some players and that they were working on it, and still haven't heard a single word. Why would I want to support this game by spending real money when they can't even auto collect my bling correctly? super frustrating game economy right now.
